Back in the day it came down to a choice between buying that or the Dungeoneer's Survival Guide, and I was seduced by the DSG's 3-d mapping grids in the back. So, what did I miss? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : rogueattorney Date : 03-17-05 11:05 AM It's one of the few AD&D books I never read. Back in the day it came down to a choice between buying that or the Dungeoneer's Survival Guide, and I was seduced by the DSG's 3-d mapping grids in the back. So, what did I miss? It makes a really nice paper weight when you're playing outside on a windy day. But seriously, I didn't like it and I got rid of mine probably 10 years ago. It has more NWP's and many, many, many rules regarding adventuring in the wilderness. The only thing I EVER used it for was the random weather generator. Now I just use the one in the 1983 WoG boxed set. If you like the Dungeoneer's Survival Guide or the Manual of the Planes or any of the other really late 1e stuff, you'd probably like the WSG as well. If you don't like that stuff, you won't find much to like in the WSG. I really liked it, and still like to occasionally read it in bed at night (much like the 1st edition DMG [the greatest RPG book ever written]), but I never used it in my games. The rules go very in-depth about things nobody outside of an asylum should worry about. (And yes, I considered using almost every single one of the rules personally.) I would rank it higher than any of the Complete books, but lower than, say...anything I have ever used in my games. Even the Castle Guide. Or, ooh! even lower than the Unearthed Arcana. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 4] Author : okaynowa Date : 03-18-05 03:14 AM Hmmm... I see. I had forgotten about those weather tables in the Greyhawk boxed set-- I liked them. Very simple to implement. Thank you, scholars. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 5] Author : Mordicus Date : 03-19-05 10:29 AM Thread Title : Great to be outdoors It's one of the few AD&D books I never read. Back in the day it came down to a choice between buying that or the Dungeoneer's Survival Guide, and I was seduced by the DSG's 3-d mapping grids in the back. So, what did I miss? The Wilderness Survival Guide still is a great help in outdoor campaigns, the same as the Dungeoneer's Survival Guide is in dungeons. I took a pile of cards and copied the tables for easy use during adventures. I could always answer inventive players who suddenly felt the need to search for food while the other set up the tents. The weather table was interesting although it has now been replaced by an electronic generator. I studied the book for hours trying to find out in what time a group of characters could arrive at their destiny, taking into account bad weather difficult roads and burdened mounts. Eventually that resulted in an easy to use chart, the PC's still use today for overland movement. It detailed the hours of sleep needed and the notions fatigue and exhaustion, still in use now. It was also one of the first books I found that used the notion proficiency. I encouraged the players to work out their own proficiencies and expanded the number of slots. On is now an expert mountaineer, another a locksmith etc. You no longer fool around with PC's who seem unable to overcome a slippery surface or walk for miles along a stream before they can reach the other side. That book written almost 20 years ago, still has its use today. Thank you Kim Mohan. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 6] Author : Edge Of Darkness Date : 03-19-05 09:55 PM I bought it, read it, and have never used it. There really isnt all that much in it that I found useful. Amazing cover art though. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Downloaded from Wizards Community (http://forums.gleemax.com) at 05-10-08 08:15 AM.
