D&D Next and Mystara

I remember listening to Mike Mearles in an onstage interview say, basically along the lines of "stay tuned we are bringing back other old D&D settings" along with the obvious Forgotten Realms theme.

I myself am trying to find time to convert the NPCs and game to D&D Next rules at the moment for a small playgroup (my brother/old school friend) who used to play back 17 years ago, with the BECMI rule system, we were only really upto Companion rules at that stage, and ended up using the Rules Cyclopedia when it was available (which I still retain a hard copy of today).

anyhow, long story short, just wondering, do you think Mystara may be on the cards for a rehash and comeback?

I would love to see this setting come back.

Yeah, this is the best game world TSR ever published. More than just a Tolkien clone world. The Hollow World was great. I'm running a Mystara campaign now, and getting ready

to convert to D&D 5e.... The conversion process for this edition is sooooo easy! Love it!

While not offically part of the world, I did start running a campaign for some new players, including my 14yr son in the Thunder Rift setting, and am thinking later if they leave the area to move them into Mystara.

I don't think that WOTC has the manpower to rewrite all the15 gazetteers for 5ed, so how could WOTC revive Mystara if they chose to do so?
  • Would it be helpful to have a single book that covered all the lands of Mystara or would such a book be far too short to be useful?
  • Would it be helpful to have an official document that translated the NPC's of each gazetteer to 5ed?
  • Are some of the old adventures worth publishing?
  • Is it best to leave Mystara alone?

No, I don't think it would be so helpful. I'd prefer a focus on select regions like the GAZ's did. Embrace the peculiar (gonzo) nature of Mystara and don't try to shoehorn everything according to some "global vision".

Actually it would be nice to have a surgical conversion in which most of the text and artwork is unaltered, but all the NPCs are updated and some of the classes new classes are reinterpreted as archetypes.

I would love to see WotC (or a licenced 3rd party like Bruce Heard) publish 5E Mystara products. Using the Gazes as a starting point they could tidy things up, modernize it, and intergrate them more closely. (I find that they were made a little bit in isolation in that, they did look back on previous ones a bit, but there was almost no forward looking to what gazes would come out afterward).

I'd do it myself it I didn't have to work for a living!

I am looking to convert the ADnD version of Mystara that were released as the Box Sets Glantri and Mystara to DnD Next if anyone is interested in helping.

Go vote for Mystara in WotC's June survey.

I am working on a conversion of the 'Hail the Heroes' adventure as a tester before starting on the 'core booklet'.

Would be useful if someone has already converted some of the main personalities into 5e so I don't have to reinvent the wheel.

I don't know of anybody that has done 5E conversions of Hail the Heroes specifically.

You could double-check at The Piazza (see my signature) to make sure, but I highly doubt it. 5E conversions are just getting underway with bits here and there as people need them for their campaigns.

Could you answer a basic question.

I have 2 box sets; Karameikos Kingdon of Adventure and Glantri both for Adnd (I think second edition as it has THAC0); how does this fit with al lthe other stuff aound that seems to relate to Mystara such as Hollow World etc.

It does, and I have a 5e conversion of Hail the Heroes and am starting on the Karameikos Adventure booklet, have most of the monsters converted.

Also am in the process of amending the gazeteer so that distance and movement is updated for 5e.

Is proving to be quite good as it is making me read the text properly, rather than speed reading as I usually do.

For those interested, the format I have created for Monster stats is this

well it would be here if the forum didn't strip the formatting. But it seems I can use a picture.

I delete the unused rows and add extra weapon rows as required

Images removed

The box fits nicely in the relevant column in the main text.

Hmm... It 's been so long since I tried to insert a picture, well before this new forum structure, that I honestly don't know know.

My only suggestion is to just play around with it bit until it works, or until some else that has figured it out lets us know.
