Okay, I am sure everyone who has played Mentzer's D&D remembers Bargle. You don't? FOR SHAME! I was leafing through my Expert rules, and it talks about the ruins north of Threshold being a base for the above villian. The Gazetteer says nothing of the sort. Is there any documentation to support either claim, and is there stats on Bargle available anywhere? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : WizO_Paradox Date : 04-15-05 09:11 PM Everytime there's an argument on the boards about "Who would win- Elminster or Raistlin?" I always throw in "BARGLE!" I don't have them on me, but I think he was statted out in Karmekios. (Boxed set.) From what I do recall, he sometimes uses that as a base of operations, but he's in cahoots with the Black Eagle Baron. For Basic rules, a typical mage stat setup would do. "He's so twisted, he needs a corkscrew to get into his robes in the morning." -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : snarfalupagus Date : 04-16-05 01:25 AM Yep...just found him in the Gazetteer. The info in there says he is the personal magician of Baron von Hendriks. It is a shame that such a bad dude has such a corny name. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 4] Author : havard Date : 04-16-05 10:40 AM He is indeed statted out for OD&D in Gaz 1 and stats for AD&D2 can be found in Karameikos, Kingdom of Adventure. IIRC he is a 15th level mage in both versions. As for the name, IMC Bargle is the name he used when he was just a street urchin in Specularum, before he backstabbed a mage, stealing his spell book and learning magic on his own WITHOUT a master. Now he prefers the name Bargellus the Archmage, although his enemies still use his old name to taunt him. The part about him being self-taught is Canon, actually. What other mage can boast such a feat? As for who would win, Elminster, Raistlin or Bargle, the answer is Elminster ofcourse, if it was a contest of raw power. If it was a contest of pure coolness ofcourse, Bargle might have a shot! ;) Håvard -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 5] Author : caeruleus Date : 04-18-05 01:07 PM I've never fogiven Bargle for killing Aleena the cleric. :weep: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 6] Author : snarfalupagus Date : 04-18-05 08:09 PM Aleena was hot. All of Elmore's girls were hot. Now that you mention it, I AM mad at Bargle. That settles it. Bargle must die! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 7] Author : havard Date : 04-19-05 04:16 AM Aleena was hot. All of Elmore's girls were hot. Now that you mention it, I AM mad at Bargle. I agree! According to Gaz1 she is still around though (although the Gaz admits this is in contradiction to the intro adventure). IMC I am planning on making her the next "pope" of the Church of Karameikos, once Oliver Jowett dies. Hmmm...real life paralells are purely coincidential. I had this planned a long time ago! That settles it. Bargle must die! Bargle is a nasty one. I doubt he'd go down easy though. Håvard -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 8] Author : Kheldren Date : 04-19-05 04:49 AM Personally I don't think Bargle should have much of a chance at really high levels. Yes he is a genius at being viciously evil and getting away to be the recurring villan, but I think he fits the low-level villan profile better. Now if you really want a twisted maniac mage from Mystara capable of mixing it with the best (and betraying them to their deaths) - take Barrimoor from Gaz 2. I think Barrimoor mst be one of the most under-rated villans around. To paraphrase Gaz 2 from a rather old memory: "Imagine all the evil villans in all the modules TSR have ever produced, now imagine them all in the same place working for the same master, and that master is Barrimoor." OK Gaz 2 was produced a reasonably long time ago, but he must literally armies of powerful creatures at his command - this reference post-dates quite a lot, of which some examples follow: G1-3, D1-3, Q1 - armies of evil giants and under-dark dwellers and a demon prince/goddess Tomb of Horrors - a very powerful demi-lich some of the DL series - armies of evil dragons I6 - a powerful vampire wizard etc. Alone he might lose, with his full resources? - there is virtually no-one he can't take one way or another... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 9] Author : havard Date : 04-19-05 09:56 AM Barrimoor is definately a contender for "most powerful D&D wizard", but perhaps lacks the classicness of Bargle. I don't know any fantasy setting that has as many cool mages as Mystara though, especially when it comes to their personalities. I mean, just look at Glantri.... Håvard -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 10] Author : Rhuvein Date : 04-19-05 07:31 PM I've never fogiven Bargle for killing Aleena the cleric. :weep: OMG!!! :OMG! Wow, I was just reading this, not 2 hours ago. I was sort of shocked that it happened so quickly into the mini adventure. The strong fighter needs to find Bargle and deal him a particularly painful death. :fight!: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 11] Author : snarfalupagus Date : 04-19-05 09:16 PM Page 8 of the Players Manual, Ending #2 of the mini adventure. You make the saving throw, get an opportunity to swing at Bargle, and if you hit, he drops dead. Remember, You only do 1 point of damage per hit in the mini. Bargle is a wussbag, and must die. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 12] Author : caeruleus Date : 04-20-05 12:49 AM According to Gaz1 she is still around though (although the Gaz admits this is in contradiction to the intro adventure). I didn't know that. Probably due to the fact that I don't have Gaz1. Okay, can anyone spin a plausible story about why/how she was brought back to life? Remember that in the Dungeon Masters Rulebook, on p. 4, it says (in the first block of shaded text), "The death of Aleena, a well-known cleric, was the 'last straw.'" That would seem to suggest she wasn't just automatically raised right away... or would it? And by the way... I did make my saving throw in that first adventure. I don't care what anyone says, I killed Bargle. I still can't forgive him, though. I was about 12 at the time, and I thought Aleena was hot too. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 13] Author : snarfalupagus Date : 04-20-05 08:14 AM Don't forget according to the Gaz that She is the daughter of the Patriarch of Threshold. His position should be enough to prompt the reanimation of our beloved HOT cleric. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 14] Author : Rhuvein Date : 04-20-05 09:36 AM I agree! According to Gaz1 she is still around though (although the Gaz admits this is in contradiction to the intro adventure). Håvard Maybe Aleena had cast a protection against evil spell just prior to being hit with the glowing arrow. And it rendered her unconscious(maybe in a semi-coma). The strong fighter wasn't too intelligent, and didn't realize she was still alive. And so after he brought her back to the church and left to find Bargle, the highest ranking cleric was able to apply some healing potions and Aleena woke up. By now, the fighter was gone, but Aleena then went to find him . . . a new adventure begins! :cheer: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 15] Author : havard Date : 04-20-05 09:43 AM I toyed around with writing a short story where the Unnamed Hero teams up with Anielle Halaran (Aleena's Twin sister, see Gaz 1) in search of an artifact that can bring Anielle's sister back to life. Would make a swell adventure too. I never got around to writing it though. :( Håvard -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 16] Author : caeruleus Date : 04-20-05 09:05 PM Thread Title : The Church of Aleena the Immortal! My friends, I bring a revelation to you! Aleena has, by her epic hotness and our great adoration of her, transcended and become an Immortal! I, Draco Caeruleus, being the one to whom Aleena has deemed fit to bring this revelation, am now officially the Patriarch of the Church of Aleena the Immortal. (See my sig... it should be visisble in post#5 of this thread.) Yes, Aleena and I are that close. I will place myself in the voting pool for bishop-dom. (as long as you don't have to lock yourself inside your computer for a week to vote) It's not that difficult. In fact, it's so easy that you are now a bishop. :) Hail Aleena! Goddess of Out of Print Hotness! They don't have gods on the Known World/Mystara, so she's an immortal rather than a goddess. (And in saying this, I'm expecting a schism in the church at any momemt now.) Out of Print Hotness... that's great! Just for coming up with that title, you are now eligible for sainthood. Unfortunately, it can only be conferred upon you after you die. And I guess Bargle is now the Devil, huh? No wait... he's the Evil Immortal. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 19] Author : caeruleus Date : 04-21-05 10:54 AM Hail Aleena! Goddess of Out of Print Hotness! I suppose this means that our holy texts are now out of print. So much for spreading the word. At least we can still buy The Holy Book of Epic Hotness over eBay.... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 20] Author : Lord Gwydion Date : 04-25-05 05:30 AM Bargle was great! In my campaign with my best friends and brother, Bargle unfortunately never made it past level 7. I kept him a few levels higher than the PCs, but after their second expedition to the Isle of Dread, and a long adventure involving a hunt for a magical sword for Duke Karamiekos, they made name level, built strongholds away from Threshold (most were in the Kelvin area IIRC), and Bargle dropped off their radar screens. A large reason for this is that my best friend was playing a Fighter with Charisma 3, and he tended to turn NPCs that were intended to be allies into enemies, and the Caric's Enemies Club became my recurring "opponents" (I wouldn't call them villains, since most were originally good guys) in the campaign. With gold dragons, insulted dwarfs, and the ghosts of wrongly slain graveyard caretakers, I didn't need Bargle any more. :( And yeah, I thought Aleena was hot, too. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 21] Author : chatdemon Date : 04-26-05 03:53 AM I didn't know that. The Karameikos Gazetteer, where she "returns", provides a note about her death to acknowledge those using Mentzer's basic set, and offers an alternative name for the NPC for those who used that story in their campaign, to avoid the "hey wait, she's dead" thing. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 22] Author : caeruleus Date : 04-26-05 01:24 PM The Karameikos Gazetteer, where she "returns", provides a note about her death to acknowledge those using Mentzer's basic set, and offers an alternative name for the NPC for those who used that story in their campaign, to avoid the "hey wait, she's dead" thing. Cool, thanks for the note. I've subsequently noticed that she's in the 2e Mystara campaign setting. No mention of her "death" in the Menzter set. Funny that.... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 23] Author : Cravensson Date : 04-27-05 02:40 PM I made 3E stats for Bargle once. Why 2 levels of rogue? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 25] Author : Cravensson Date : 04-27-05 05:17 PM Because it says in his history that he was a street urchin and a bandit. So I figured he took a couple of levels of Rogue to survive in that environment, then stole the spellbook, taught himself magic, and multi-classed as a Wizard. It also makes him a bit of a surprise - if they're expecting him to be a straight-up Wizard (which is his reputation) they won't be prepared for the possibility of Sneak Attack or Evasion. And it makes it easier for him to steal things from the PC's while he's close to them pretending to be their friend, which was always one of his tricks. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 26] Author : snarfalupagus Date : 04-27-05 08:10 PM There is another discussion of Bargle over at dragonsfoot. Oh, and snarfalupagus, I noticed the addition to your sig. Nice. :) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 28] Author : Cravensson Date : 05-02-05 09:46 AM Well, I never did find my 3.0 stats for Bargle, so I decided to re-do him for 3.5. I decided to take a page from WOTC's book and show Bargle at different stages of his career. I used the stat scores from "Karameikos, Kingdom of Adventure" as his starting stats, and I gave him full hit points for his first die and half for all remaining hit dice. Without further ado, here is Bargle the bandit before he became a wizard. Bargle, ("The Infamous") Chaotic Evil Male Human Rogue 2 Medium-sized Humanoid (Human) CR: 2, HD: 2d6 , HP: 9 , spd: 30 ft, AC: 16, touch: 13, Flat-footed: 13, BAB: +1, Grapple: +0 , Attack or Full Attack: 1 Short Sword +0, 1d6-1 Piercing, Or 1 Hand crossbow +4, 1d4 Piercing, SA: Sneak Attack +1d6, SQ: Trapfinding, Evasion, SV Fort:+0, Dex: +6, Will: -1:, Str: 9, Dex: 17, Con: 10, Int: 18, Wis: 9, Cha: 15 Skills & Feats: Appraise: +8, Bluff: +7, Decipher Script: +8, Escape Artist: +7, Disable Device: +7, Open Lock: +6, Intimidate: +7, Sleight of Hand: +7, Hide: +7, Knowledge (Local) +8, Listen : +3, Move Silently: +7, Disguise: +9, Search:+8, Spot: +3, Forgery:+10, Run, Deceitful Weapon and Armor Proficiencies: Bargle is proficient with all simple weapons, plus the hand crossbow, rapier, sap, shortbow, and short sword. Bargle is proficient with light armor, but not with shields. Possessions: Masterwork Studded Leather, Short Sword, Hand Crossbow (10 bolts), dagger, 1,200 gp Special Qualities: Sneak Attack: If Bargle can catch an opponent when he is unable to defend himself effectively from his attack, he can strike a vital spot for extra damage. The rogue’s attack deals extra damage any time his target would be denied a Dexterity bonus to AC (whether the target actually has a Dexterity bonus or not), or when Bargle flanks his target. Should Bargle score a critical hit with a sneak attack, this extra damage is not multiplied. Ranged attacks can count as sneak attacks only if the target is within 30 feet. With a sap (blackjack) or an unarmed strike, Bargle can make a sneak attack that deals nonlethal damage instead of lethal damage. He cannot use a weapon that deals lethal damage to deal nonlethal damage in a sneak attack, not even with the usual -4 penalty. Bargle can sneak attack only living creatures with discernible anatomies-undead, constructs, oozes, plants, and incorporeal creatures lack vital areas to attack. Any creature that is immune to critical hits is not vulnerable to sneak attacks. Bargle must be able to see the target well enough to pick out a vital spot and must be able to reach such a spot. A rogue cannot sneak attack while striking a creature with concealment or striking the limbs of a creature whose vitals are beyond reach. Trapfinding: Bargle can use the Search skill to locate traps when the task has a Difficulty Class higher than 20. Finding a nonmagical trap has a DC of at least 20, or higher if it is well hidden. Finding a magic trap has a DC of 25 + the level of the spell used to create it. Bargle can use the Disable Device skill to disarm magic traps. A magic trap generally has a DC of 25 + the level of the spell used to create it. A rogue who beats a trap’s DC by 10 or more with a Disable Device check can study a trap, figure out how it works, and bypass it (with her party) without disarming it. Tactics: This version of Bargle is a small-time con-man and thug, the leader of a gang of cutthroat youths. While he lacks the magical power he will one day have, Bargle at this stage in his career is no less vicious. The name "Bargle" may actually be a corruption of the word "burgle", which he has frequently been known to do. He is exceedingly proud of his reputation, and although he has not yet comitted any major crimes, he is constantly working to top himself. At this point, nobody calls Bargle "The Infamous" except for himself. If Bargle is given the opportunity to steal a baby's glass eye, you can be sure that both the opportunity and the eye will be taken. Bargle is fond of disguising himself as someone harmless and either stealing important and expensive items or luring people into the clutches of his gang. While the other boys are only 1st level commoners, they are as vicious and scheming as their leader. Bargle is wanted by the authorities in Specularuam, but his facility with disguise and escape have thus far assured that he avoids capture. In a fight, Bargle will try to flank an opponent, in order to use his sneak attack to best advantage, but he will flee if the fight starts going badly, using his arts of Hide and Disguise to lose any pursuers that can keep up with him. He does not care about any of his gang members, but only about himself. He will gleefully kill or allow any of them to be captured if it serves his purposes. Quote: "Give us your money and we'll burn your house to the ground." -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 29] Author : chatdemon Date : 05-02-05 10:09 AM Without further ado, here is Bargle the bandit before he became a wizard. I don't really care for making him multi-class, whereever that notion came from. In his first appearance in Known World lore, he's a fairly low level Magic User, casting Sleep, Charm Person and Magic Missile, IIRC. If he was multiclassed at all, Magic user should come first. But, since he was written as a Classic D&D NPC, I wouldn't have him multiclassed or dual classed at all, since that option is not available unless he was pursuing the Polymath (or whatever its called) path to immortality, but he doesn't strike me as that experienced and powerful. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 30] Author : Cravensson Date : 05-02-05 11:09 AM Mostly I multiclassed him because he started out as a bandit before becoming a wizard. OK, you couldn't multiclass in Classic D&D. I get that. I just thought it fit his concept. If you don't want to multiclass him, he'd be a 17th level wizard according to K, KOA. Actually, if I wanted him to be real nasty I should give him a few feats and skills from the Book Of Vile Darkness, but I was going mostly for core with him. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 31] Author : havard Date : 05-02-05 02:23 PM Mostly I multiclassed him because he started out as a bandit before becoming a wizard. Cool writeup of Bargle Cravensson! I agree with the multiclass approach. I wish they had done that in the AD&D2 version aswell. When converting to a new system (2E or 3E), I believe capturing the essence of the character/setting/whatever should be emphasized rather than whatever stats he/it had in other rulesets. Summon Familiar: Bargle has not yet summoned his familiar. Tactics: This is how I see Bargle at about the time he killed Aleena in the old introductory adventure to Original D&D. Now Bargle is packing some serious magical ability in addition to his Rogue skills. Bargle is beginning to feel his thirst for power growing, and has moved beyond petty larceny and intimidation. He has retained the services of a small force of goblins, and is planning on using them to plunder Threshold. The only difference in his tactics now is that he will use spells to disorient or soften up his opponents before he moves in for the kill with his Sneak Attack, and now he has goblins instead of his old gang. Bargle's deceptive abilities, backed up by his magic, are often extremely difficult to penetrate, thus accounting for why the Threshold authorities have not caught him yet. Bargle’s cohort is a 5th level goblin warrior whom he has befriended. Quote: "You’re looking a little rough around the edges, my friends.
