I recently obtained a whole bunch of heraldic artwork in vector format and set about adding things together and editing. My first two examples are full achievements for Alfheim and Darokin. What do you guys think? http://www.geocities.com/brendan_corliss/heraldry/alfheim/alfheim.htm http://www.geocities.com/brendan_corliss/heraldry/darokin/darokin.htm -Damon -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : Hugin Date : 06-18-05 04:29 PM Very Nice! Much more extravagant, as heraldry representing countries should be.  -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : Thorf Date : 06-18-05 05:00 PM Thread Title : Very nice Great! I especially like the Alfheim one. Do you have explanations for the meaning of each symbol? I'd love to know. Don't let this distract you too much from your maps, though. ;) :P :D -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 4] Author : BrendanCorliss Date : 06-18-05 08:15 PM Great! I especially like the Alfheim one. Do you have explanations for the meaning of each symbol? I'd love to know. Thanks! The arms themselves (ie. the Shields) are straight canon from K:KoA Explorer's Guide p. 111. Then I just started adding elements from a traditional European (mostly British) heraldry perspective. Without getting into a treatise on Heraldry, the main parts of a full achievement are the Coat of Arms itself, the helmet, the crest (symbol issuing from the top of the helm), the mantling (flowing cloth usually draped from the helm), the supporters, and a motto. There are often other elements as well, but those are the most important ones. For Alfheim, I went with a border that was almost a hybrid of foliage & mantling. Green & Yellow just seemed to be complimentary colors to the coat of arms. The helm itself has no special signifigance, although in RW heraldry it often can. The arms firing the bow and arrow just seemed appropriate for the Elves of Alfheim and I thought Unicorns were an insteresting animal to be the supporters. The motto is Elvish (go figure) and translates as, "The Tree is Life." For Darokin, the mantling and helm don't have any special signifigance (except the colors). I chose the crest of the dove w/ the olive branch to symbolize the Republic's reputation for diplomacy (via the DDC). The supporters were chosen because they had that Renaissance vibe that I associate w/ Darokin. The motto is Esperanto (aka Thyatian IMC) and translates to "Ambition, Prosperity, Virtue." Anyway, there's still some tweaking to be done... adjusting some positions and colors, etc. But overall, I think I'm happy with them. I'll post more as I finish them. Don't let this distract you too much from your maps, though. ;) :P :D Oh, don't worry. I should have Minrothad, as well as a corrected version of Ierendi, up by the end of the weekend. -Damon -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 5] Author : BrendanCorliss Date : 06-18-05 09:55 PM And here, we have Thyatis... http://www.geocities.com/brendan_corliss/heraldry/thyatis/thyatis.htm -Damon -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 6] Author : BrendanCorliss Date : 06-19-05 12:29 AM Ierendi & Heldann are now up: http://www.geocities.com/brendan_corliss/heraldry/ierendi/ierendi.htm http://www.geocities.com/brendan_corliss/heraldry/heldann/heldann.htm BTW, the motto for Thyatis, "Pro la Imperio" translates as "For the Empire", Ierendi's "Regantoj de Maro" is "Rulers of the Sea" & Heldann's "Sieg ist Wahrheit" is "Victory is truth". -Damon -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 7] Author : Thorf Date : 06-19-05 02:04 AM These are all great. I noticed before on your web site that you were into heraldry. You certainly seem to know your stuff! Very impressive. :) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 8] Author : BrendanCorliss Date : 06-19-05 02:31 PM These are all great. I noticed before on your web site that you were into heraldry. You certainly seem to know your stuff! Very impressive. :) Thanks, Thorf! I must confess - I am a big herladry nerd. ;) I have a good half dozen books devoted solely to the topic not to mention 20 or more websites bookmarked for quick reference. I think that means I have to I have to be careful not to turn into some pendantic old Englishman (no offense to the English) from the College of Arms when dealing with Mystaran Heraldry. :teach: Anyway, here's Ylaruam: http://www.geocities.com/brendan_corliss/heraldry/ylaruam/ylaruam.htm I'm also soliciting suggestions for a motto - some reference to the Nahmeh, perhaps? I don't know, I'm having trouble coming up with something suitable here. Anyone else got any ideas? -Damon -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 9] Author : Twin Campaigns Date : 06-20-05 02:55 AM Thread Title : Ylari slogan I would suggest something referring to the Eternal Truth of the Eternal Way. It would keep things simple and close to the core of Al-Kalimism. The immortal patrons of Al-Kalim (the Immortal Guardians) are not essential to the cult, neither is reverence of the person of Al-Kalim. (Thus "Al-Kalimu Akbar" or something similar missed the mark a bit.) It is a religion of Law and Tradition, so the Way itself is essential. So I would vote for the simple "The Way of the Eternal Truth". As for the suitable "translation": I don't know. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 10] Author : BrendanCorliss Date : 06-20-05 04:37 PM So I would vote for the simple "The Way of the Eternal Truth". Ooh... I like it! It fits what I was reaching for but couldn't quite put my finger on. Excellent. As for the suitable "translation": I don't know. Yeah, anyone here speak or know anyone who speaks Arabic? Most other languages are relatively easy for me to translate with the aid of an English to (insert language here) dictionary, but Arabic... well, that's another story. -Damon -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 11] Author : havard Date : 06-22-05 12:09 PM Yeah, anyone here speak or know anyone who speaks Arabic? Try this link: http://www.almisbar.com/dict_page.html Oh, and how about putting your heraldry stuff on directlty on the boards like Thorf does with his maps? Would be cool, I think :) Håvard -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Downloaded from Wizards Community (http://forums.gleemax.com) at 05-10-08 09:28 AM.
