Thread Title : Old D&D

We just had a house fire , everyone got out okay and the damage was not too bad but we have to live at my grandma's house for 4 months.  We were looking throught the attic and found an old d&d set from 1978.  Pretty cool. So we are trying to figure out where it came from.  I do believe that if it had burned up that it would be the most respectible way to destroy a D&D game.

Moved to the Out of Print board.

From the year that you noted, it sounds like a Holmes version of the D&D Basic game.  Was there a module in the box along with the core rules?  If so, what was the module?  Figuring that you said it was 1978, I'm going to guess that the module would have been B1 The Search for the Unknown.

The set looks like it is a B2 modole with the numbers 10001 on it.  

P.S. it turns out it is from 1979 not 1978.  And it has an fighter and a mage on it. Ok

Ok, that's one of the later editions.  Now, on the picture of the box, does it have a fighter holding a bow with an arrow ready to shoot and a wizard with a wand looking through a door at a red dragon sitting on a pile of gold?

Well then you have the Holme edition of the D&D Basic Rules.  It doesn't fetch a huge price on auctions (I bought one for about $20 six months ago), but it is a fun game to play none the less. :)
