Has anyone ever read any of them? if so, what are your opinions on them, did you enoy them? or hate them? Also does anyone know how many issues were there? It also seems to me, that dispite the title, it looks like they were set in The Forgotten Realms, am I right? I would apricate any thoughts given -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : bobsan Date : 10-21-05 04:10 PM I have a good stack of them myself and have enjoyed them all. I'm still trying to finish off my collection of them but have not had the money to yet. It was these comics that actually sparked my interest in the Realms and especially the inn represented in them; Selune's Smile. I'd recommend them to anyone that can get their hands on them. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : Cthulhudrew Date : 10-29-05 04:30 AM Has anyone ever read any of them? if so, what are your opinions on them, did you enoy them? or hate them? I own quite a few of them, from all of the various series. They weren't terribly good, sadly. The Forgotten Realms/AD&D line was the best, IMO, but all of the lines suffered greatly (I feel) from trying to make the books "all ages" accessible. They ended up being a bit too simplistic and juvenile, sadly, but there were some really great ideas there. I mainly picked them up as reference material for drawing/writing D&D comics of my own. Also does anyone know how many issues were there? There was originally just one series, Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. This ran for 36 issues, and was set in the Realms. One of the characters in that series, the fallen paladin Priam Agrivar, ended up in the spinoff title "The Forgotten Realms" set in Greyhawk (just kidding). FR ran for 25 issues, was written by Jeff Grubb (he of D&D design fame) and featured, among other things, a Halruaan wizard with his own airship. FR, in turn, spun off a Spelljammer comic, which ran for 15 issues. I only have one issue of this, but judging from the issue I have, this seems like the worst written and drawn of the lot. There was also a Dragonlance comic, which had a fairly lengthy run- 34 issues. I only have a couple of this one, but it was actually fairly decent. It also seems to me, that dispite the title, it looks like they were set in The Forgotten Realms, am I right? Yeppers. Speaking of AD&D comics, does anyone remember the AD&D ads that used to run in comic books back in the day? They'd have a page or two of comic action, and a cliffhanger? There was a wizard, a fighter, an elf, and (I think) a thief. Wonder if anyone's got those scanned/collected anywhere. I never did find out what happened after that wizard used his scroll to dimension door the party somewhere... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 4] Author : diaglo Date : 11-14-05 12:37 PM sold all of my comics books or traded them in a few years ago. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 5] Author : skathros Date : 11-20-05 09:29 AM There was also a Dragonlance comic, which had a fairly lengthy run- 34 issues. I have a hand-full of the AD&D/FR series, but i found it not as good as the DL (disclaimer: this might have to do with my love of Krynn, so there may be a touch of bias ;) ) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 6] Author : arntof Date : 12-06-05 02:35 PM The comics were all quite good. The paladin Priam Agrivar were the link between the two, as his sister(a half-drow wizardess) was a main character in the AD&D comic. This character also appeared in one of the follow ups to Faith and Pantheons 2e, proving that the comics werent disregarded in official products. Yes, 36 of the AD&D and 25 of the FR series, but dont forget that there was at least one annual crossover too, from both of them. I preferred the DL series, though, although the main focus became Taladas after issue 21, something that somehow lessened the overall quality of the series. The Spelljammer series was nothing to read, really...that is the only series I didnt collect all issues from. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 7] Author : Klaggor Crownshield Date : 12-08-05 02:10 PM Yet more to add... I loved the Forgotten Realms comics... they even went through the Time of Troubles, and explained the changes of the world... pretty sweet, actually... Rags Morales was the artist on most of them. The fill in artists kind of sucked, but what can you do. The characters were very interesting and dynamic... more so than many comics out there. The Spelljammer series was a waste... though I will let you all in on a secret... Joe Quseda, the current president of Marvel Comics and fan favorite artist was the artist for the book. It is obviously before he grew into his talent. Most comic references don't even mention that he was the artist. :D -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 8] Author : Treymordin Date : 12-08-05 02:55 PM Were there stats for these characters ever made or updated to 3.5? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 9] Author : yellowdingo Date : 12-12-05 10:23 AM I own quite a few of them, from all of the various series. Though it described the crew treking about on the smalljammer at first to rescue some pacifist clerics from the neghoi, it sent on tho travel to some dark sun type world? where it picked up a bunch of desert clerics, then popped off course with the elven armada and then wound up telling a bunch of flash back stories about the history of the captain of the little spelljammer (Meridith, aka lady Chaos). Then she winds up on some jungle planet where the wild life is particularly savage and they have never known magic where Meridiths Son Bors is setting himself up a civilization of fighters on a jungle world Where a RED Dragon has decided that a bunch of fighters are no match. Then Mummy shows up and in the heat of manly battle after most have died fighting. "You know for a dragon you aint very smart." Spake Meridith (aka lady Chaos) "You were saying somthing Puny Human?" spake the great red as it attempts to squish her. "Finger of Death" Spake Meridith. Dragon goes thud. Primitive locals all suffering Shock and Awe. "Right I'm Off! You can stay in this back water if you so desire, but I'm out of here!" Series pretty much ends there. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 10] Author : yellowdingo Date : 12-12-05 10:39 AM Thread Title : Forgotton Realms on the Otherhand is underated Pretty much confined to the realms and spread over the Crisis period involving the theft of the tablets of fate which determine the Gods themselves, The Halruuan Wizard Dwalimor Omen has a nice ship (a sailing vessel) which does not fly, rather it has certain magical artefact known as the Astrolabe of Nimbral onboard. Astrolabe of Nimbral This large magical Organ allows the User to Teleport the Ship, Tower, ect to any location in the Forgotton realms without error. No need to traverse the great distances by road or river or sea, just set the coordinates and transfer instantaneously and without error. He is of course hunted by a Halruuan Mage with a warrant for his arrest who travels in an airship with a crew of mages in navy uniforms all armed with wands. Some petty matter over the theft of the Astrolabe of Nimbral from its previous owner the Magist of Nimbral...heed it no mind. The old fellow lent the thing and just forgot. You knowhow wizards are. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 11] Author : Thurbane Date : 01-03-06 08:34 AM I read the AD&D and the FR comics, but never read Dragonlance. I thought there were extremely enjoyable. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 12] Author : RedWizard Date : 01-04-06 08:05 AM Speaking of AD&D comics, does anyone remember the AD&D ads that used to run in comic books back in the day? Heh, never saw any of those, but I didn't read so many American comics back in the 80's... I still have not been able to get any more issues sadly :weep: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Downloaded from Wizards Community (http://forums.gleemax.com) at 05-10-08 08:18 AM.
