Anyone else here try it? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : katana_one Date : 12-13-05 12:37 PM I recall playing it at the local mall arcade once or twice. It was fun, but I didn't get too far. It disappeared quickly, as there did not seem to be a lot of interest in it at the time. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : Hugin Date : 12-13-05 07:33 PM Was it only out as an arcade or did it also come out on a home platform? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 4] Author : Cthulhudrew Date : 12-13-05 07:53 PM It was only an arcade version, and it was actually the sequel to another game set in Mystara, Towers of Doom (which took the players through regions of Darokin and the Broken Lands, though its Shadow Elf villain was, sadly, very drow-esque in appearance). Both games can actually be found various places online, playable with appropriate emulators, if you do a search. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 5] Author : havard Date : 12-14-05 04:15 AM I havent played Shadows of Mystara, but I have fond memories of playing Tower of Doom with friends in an Arcade Hall here in Norway sometime in the late 90s. What was fun about it was that you could have four players involved at the same time. My favorite character was the dwarf. I remember being surprised at the Mystara references, but ofcourse it only made me like the game more. I like how people have tried to incorporate some of the elements from the Arcade Games into timelines, almanacs etc from the fan production for the setting. I've also been working on tying in events/locations from Warriors of the Eternal Sun (Hollow World Arcade Game) with the Thunder Rift project. The only game I have never heard anything about was the Order of the Griffon, which I am beginning to wonder if anyone actually has played. I can confirm what Cthulhudrew says that most of these games can be found easily for free download along with emulators from searches even through www. I havent had a chance to actually take advantage of that opportunity though. I've definitely never played it myself, and had completely forgotten about it until you just now mentioned it. Going to do some research and see what info I can come up with. (Looks like it was released for the Turbografix game system- no wonder nobody's ever played it. I think that thing came and went from the marketplace so fast the developers got whiplash.) There were two other Mystara computer games that I recall- Fantasy Empires and the other was, I think, called Strongholds? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 7] Author : davidrpaige Date : 12-14-05 12:48 PM Thread Title : Game ROMs I actually have the ROM files to both those games, so I play it on a MAME program. I had found these files on www.mame.dk, which was this huge web site with all the ROMs of arcades for free download. Unfortunately, it got shut down, but I made off with a huge number of classic games that I loved to play plus the D&D arcade games. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 8] Author : NPC Dave Date : 12-14-05 03:14 PM In the mid 1990's, a kick butt arcade game by Capcom came out called SHADOWS OVER MYSTARA came out which was one of the most fun games I have ever played, even 10 years later I love playing it. Anyone else here try it? Played it and completed it many times with friends. Very tied in to the PWAs, and a blast to play. Even translates easily to pen and paper if you wanted to turn it into an adventure or campaign. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 9] Author : NPC Dave Date : 12-14-05 03:21 PM The only game I have never heard anything about was the Order of the Griffon, which I am beginning to wonder if anyone actually has played. Håvard I played it but have not finished it. It plays out all the adventure hooks about lycanthropes and the Koriszegy Keep that are in GAZ1. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 10] Author : MrFilthyIke Date : 12-14-05 03:25 PM I played it but have not finished it. Is there any way to find these nowadays?? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 11] Author : tjedge1 Date : 12-14-05 08:32 PM I only played the tower of doom a couple times, but never saw the others. Never really could afford to hang out at Arcades until the only games at them were Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat lines, which got boring quick. Other than that I only play PC or Xbox, and I used to play Nintendo and PS games. Too bad they don't come outon some special for one of those systems. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 12] Author : havard Date : 12-19-05 07:00 AM I only played the tower of doom a couple times, but never saw the others. Would have been nice to see a Mystara game on the new XBox 360 wouldnt it? ;) Håvard -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 13] Author : waferthinninja Date : 12-19-05 05:16 PM Thread Title : MAME version You can play it on your PC using MAME (Multi Arcade Machine Emulator): Shadows Over Mystara (http://www.rom-world.com/file.php?id=23937) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 14] Author : DmJoeSolarte Date : 12-21-05 01:12 AM It came out for the Sega Saturn, it required the 4 MB ram cart to runa nd the load time was attrociously bad. The highlight on that version is one time, we were playing, I was the wizard and I had reached level 19, we were at the part where you were climbing up the stairwell, and my friend noticed that my wizards staff was glowing. I was like "Oh yeah, that means we can do FINAL STRIKE", he asked what that was, so I told him. He was like "How do we do it?" I go "On Three we press the A,B,and C button down and hold down the JOystick, I think." So we tried it. It sure as hell worked. We destroyed the hell out of a few dark elves.....that was about it..... It sure looked cool though. ANd of course, the staff was destroyed, and thus could not be done for the rest of the game...... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 15] Author : Marc Date : 12-21-05 10:06 PM Has anyone managed or tried to fit the characters of the game into Mystara, I recall the arch enemy was diemus? who is he, and where does he come from? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 16] Author : DmJoeSolarte Date : 01-02-06 10:27 AM Has anyone managed or tried to fit the characters of the game into Mystara, I recall the arch enemy was diemus? who is he, and where does he come from? Deimos the Lich. He is the main villain in the first game (TOWER OF DOOM) and appears about midway in the game in SHADOWS OF MYSTARA. I have not played tower of doom for a while, so I don't know what his real story/agenda is or was. In SHADOWS, he was subservant to Synn, whom was a very mighty and ancient Red Dragon. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 17] Author : Zardnaar Date : 01-03-06 12:23 AM Our local arcade had that game there up to about a year ago in the older game section. Might go have another look and see if its still there. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 18] Author : tjedge1 Date : 01-14-06 02:09 PM Would have been nice to see a Mystara game on the new XBox 360 wouldnt it? ;) Håvard They should make it one of those downloads like Joust they have on the XBox 360. That would be really awesome. You can play it on your PC using MAME (Multi Arcade Machine Emulator): Shadows Over Mystara (http://www.rom-world.com/file.php?id=23937) How does this work. I'm new to this ROM thing. Where do I get the program to run it. I have the game downloaded, but it doesn't work. I know it has to be there, I'm just missing it. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 19] Author : Hroth Date : 01-15-06 04:52 PM I have played both Tower of Doom and Shadow over Mystara (ROM versions). They did come out for the Playstation I believe but were only released in Japan (sigh). Strangely enough, playing them has made me interested in the Mystara world, so I've been looking around for information on it on the web. Both games are great in the style of Golden Axe. I beat both using Lucia (the elf). Just remembered a question. In the games the Shadow elves can make teleport jumps to somewhat better positions. Is this a quality of shadow elves in general or just an addition to the game to make them more a threat than general Gnolls and Kobolds? Thanks! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 20] Author : Cthulhudrew Date : 01-15-06 06:01 PM Just remembered a question. I assume the shadow elf in the game either had this ability through some magic item he carried, or else was just using the teleport spell (in the D&D game version the game was based on, all elves were fighter/magic-users). Were there more shadow elves in the Shadows Over Mystara game? In Tower of Doom there was just the one. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 21] Author : sbwilson Date : 01-15-06 06:57 PM There were two other Mystara computer games that I recall- Fantasy Empires and the other was, I think, called Strongholds? Yes, I used to own both of them. Poor to mediocre at best. The really only thing Mystara related was the main overhead map. Other than that, they were pretty generic. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 22] Author : Hroth Date : 01-16-06 12:39 AM Were there more shadow elves in the Shadows Over Mystara game? In Tower of Doom there was just the one. Yes, lots more. They first appear in Stage 4 (Skies over Aengmore) and again in Stage 5 if you have an elf in your party and choose the Forest Bridge. They also appear regularly in later stages depending on the path you choose (I think, only played all the way through once). The shadow elf boss of Stage 4 (after the Harpy) is named Tel'Arin. I read that there is another shadow elf boss named Tel'Erond who is actually under some spell (I found a very good source to compensate not having taken that path before :) ), but I have not seen him yet. Forgot about the elves having incarnate magic in early D&D versions. Thanks for reminding me. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 23] Author : Hugin Date : 01-17-06 07:23 PM How does this work. I'm new to this ROM thing. However, Even after downloading that and the game itself, I still can't get it to run. Can anybody help us out? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 24] Author : DmJoeSolarte Date : 01-22-06 05:47 PM Yes, lots more. YOu have to have a Dwarf in your party after you enter that one big hole that you enter after freeing the Gnome Village from the Chimera (or go thru the forest of illusions, I think). You fall all the way down. Normally you only get a choice between going to a Path of Fire or a Path of Ice. If the Dwarf is there you get a third path where you are led by the Dwarf. Once you cross it, and fight your way thru the path, you run into both Tel-Arin and Tel-Erond and have to fight both of them at once. Now, there is a thing here: if you concentrate on defeating one of them first (I don't remember which) then the second Elf (his brother, the one that saves you) will appear later in the game just before you take on Synn and have to fight the Manticore,Black Dragon, and OwlBear thing at the same time. HE appears, defeats them all before he is defeated by Synn and your characters have to enter the final battle. Forgot about the elves having incarnate magic in early D&D versions. Thanks for reminding me. I would compare what the Shadow Elves do to "Blink"Spell magic then teleporting. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 25] Author : havard Date : 01-23-06 09:44 AM I would compare what the Shadow Elves do to "Blink"Spell magic then teleporting.
