Eric Holmes Fantasy Role Playing Games from 1981, read it over Xmas......he was talking about how parents would call them and ask them if the game is healthy for their kids, he would tell them that it's a great alternative to alcohol, drugs, (loud) concerts, etc......then went on to say he's been in gaming sessions where alcohol, drugs and music were present........what kind of environment do you guys create for your sessions.....me.....2 of the 3......red wine and progressive rock( not loud).....I know this is a lame thread...bare w/ me....it may get interesting. ;) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : Attila Date : 01-16-06 12:21 PM I found a beautiful copy of J. Eric Holmes Fantasy Role Playing Games from 1981.... SWEET! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : weasel fierce Date : 01-16-06 09:10 PM With my old group, we'd have either mood music (the alien sound tracks work wonders) or generic metal stuff in the background, and plenty of beer. Currently, a few beers, plenty of soda and snacks, and usually no background noise. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 4] Author : Bael the Bard Date : 01-17-06 08:53 PM Soda's, pizza, candy, coffee if it goes long, no beer since it was a public place. Classical music the shop owner says it doesn't bother anyone and it'll make you smarter. Maybe a radio on some rock station for a battle:fight!: , like Mandatory metallica baby. Yeah rock on -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 5] Author : WizzyBlackmore Date : 01-19-06 01:10 AM 3 replies/54 views...about right personality-wise for insular/introvert gamers...I tried. :rimshot: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 6] Author : realmaster Date : 01-19-06 02:59 AM We have soda, snacks, background (changes for what is happening in the game) music and low lights for the maps to complete the mood. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 7] Author : OGAM_engineer Date : 01-19-06 05:49 PM We used to have various bottles of soda (not since The Great Splash-remind me to do something unpleasant to Mark's character), occasionally music (varies depending on who's house we play at-lately lot's of classic rock for some reason), snacks and meals are available, but not at the game (no arguments over last slice, etc). But its boring. Our games are played without music, around a dining or kitchen table. Usually coffee is the beverage of choice, and snacks are usually pretzels or popcorn. The "atmosphere" is usually one of light hearted fun created by the interaction of a group of friends. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 9] Author : WizzyBlackmore Date : 01-20-06 12:00 PM I guess I was looking for: "We light up the room w/ candles, put on Black Sabbath Heaven and Hell and have various wine and lagers floating around the table..." essentially what I do....... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 10] Author : havard Date : 01-20-06 01:01 PM I've never included any alchohol into any of our gaming sessions though wine (for Vampire) and Rum (for a D&D pirate game) has been considered. We sometimes play in a room lit only by candles, but it usually makes it hard to read character sheets and/or see the result of die rolls, so this works best for rules light gaming sessions. We almost always use music when we play, usually movie sound tracks. Unfortunately these get old real fast, so I'm really getting sick of most of the rather large collection I have already. :( I'm interested in other suggestions for creating a good gaming atmosphere though :) Great thread Wizzy :) Håvard -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 11] Author : WizzyBlackmore Date : 01-20-06 01:17 PM try (if you have not already) Blade Runner (Vangelis), Dune, Flash gordon (queen, for sci fi gaming...gamma world) and Heavy Metal as far as soundtracks...... .......Jethro Tull and Gentle Giant are great for that Medieval vibe as well. A couple large candles on the gaming table (tucked out of the way) is sufficient light for gaming..... ;) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 12] Author : WizzyBlackmore Date : 01-20-06 01:28 PM oh and also, a wooden cheese board w/ 2-3 large hunks of cheese w/ the knife sticking out of the largest cheese......and some salami or cold cuts..... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 13] Author : havard Date : 01-20-06 02:57 PM oh and also, a wooden cheese board w/ 2-3 large hunks of cheese w/ the knife sticking out of the largest cheese......and some salami or cold cuts..... Now this I like! :) Håvard -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 14] Author : shadowelf Date : 01-24-06 08:32 AM My current group, we drink tea and coffee and eat chocolate biscuits, which we all try to contribute to. Music has been a problem as the DM is too busy to keep changing it, so we are now trying Radio Rivendell. One player got a bit tired of Runrig. But my previous group, we played upstairs in the pub which sells real ale, which is a much better option really. Costs money to hire the room, though (and buy the beer of course). And if the host is away we can still meet. The advantage of being at someone's house is having the computer available of course. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 15] Author : RobertFisher Date : 01-24-06 09:37 PM My current group is the first one I've been in that has had music playing during sessions. Although, we don't do it now that we play at my place most of the time. (I don't have as much appropriate mood music.) Alcohol was never a big part of any group I've been in. Although, people in my current group will very occasionally have something. Snacks are, of course, a mainstay in every group I've played with. Many of my groups have regularly had lunch or dinner together before sessions. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 16] Author : gibby701 Date : 01-26-06 02:13 PM Beer or wine...if playing Friday or Saturday night....otherwise soda and chips... Music: The Omen, LOTR soundtracks...usually will throw on Wagner when playing vikings and the sort... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Downloaded from Wizards Community (http://forums.gleemax.com) at 05-10-08 08:18 AM.
