One ranger opened a bag and died from a giant centipede and the barbarian squashed the mage trying to body slam some kobolds, mind you the barbarian has a 19 str and the mage was already unconcious at -4 when the barbarian tried to body slam the kolbold. We've found some magic and I have been most fortunate I have a -3 ac at 2nd lv, -3 from dex, -8 from +1 plate mail and -2 from +1 sheild. I have a +1 sword from the first module and I got the +1 plate mail and +1 sheild off of the drow priestess the party thought I could use it the most 6 movement but -3 ac I think thats a fair exchange. Our party consists on Myself an elven ranger, a human mage, an elven rogue, another elven ranger but she got killed by the centipede she might be resurrected but I don't know the characters kinda reckless and the party doesn't really want to res her. a human fighter who acts like a paladin kind of annoying, an elven assasin, a human illusionist, a human cleric, another human cleric she rps pretty well. and the Half orc barbarian he decided to play still and the 1/2 orc barbarian was a choice the dm allowed he thought it would make for good rp and it is. Well we just saved the princess how cliche and now we know of a drow encampment and there might be giants fun fun this is gonna be one hell of a campaign. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : RobertFisher Date : 03-06-06 06:48 PM Congrats! Sounds like fun. Keep us updated! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : Evergreen_Aldaron Date : 03-06-06 08:48 PM Ahh yes....drow elves and giants.....sounds like you ARE in for some fun. Good luck!!! ;) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 4] Author : Bael the Bard Date : 03-07-06 08:39 AM Yeah its been fun and its gonna be a couple weeks until the next game cause most of the party including myself and the DM of this game has joined a dragonstar 3.0 campaign so we play alternate saturdays. I misread magic armor with magic plate mail I have a movement of 9 instead of 6 cause it goes up into the next movement category. Wow -3 ac with 9 movement at lv 2 I might be lv 3 cause he hasn't tallied exp from the end of the last module. So far we've fought humans, stirges, skeletons, zombies, giant centipedes, a cobra, a giant spider, kobolds, orcs, goblins, hobgoblins, bugbears, 1 drow priestess. But I have no Idea what giants are going to be like even at a -3 ac I'm a bit scared of what their str bonus to dmg is. Also another pressing point when I reach lv 4 I get another wep prof I can either double specialize with the longsword or get wep prof with a bow. Which do you think would be more beneficial because most of the battles are close up and personal with the sword. alright thanx -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 5] Author : Extempus Date : 03-08-06 04:35 AM I don't tend to worry about giants these days... my ranger is 21st level (I've played him for 24 years now), so he does get a bonus of 21 points of damage per hit against giant class monsters. With his magical items, he can dispatch your average giant with just two swings of his two-handed sword... it's definitely something to look forward to! As far as weapon proficiences go, stick with the bow. I believe all of our characters who can use the bow specialize in it. We even have an archer character (the class was outlined in Dragon #45 and reprinted in Best of the Dragon, Volume III), and it works out very well: the bad guys are softened up quite a bit with ranged weapons and spells before we engage hand-to-hand, if at all. When you're low level and have barely any hit points, dealing out damage from a distance makes a lot of sense. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 6] Author : Evergreen_Aldaron Date : 03-08-06 05:04 AM Ahh...a man cut from the same cloth. My oldest character is a ranger as well, and my name sake. The Archer sub class in the Best of Dragon is a GREAT 1st edition option, especially when lower level. Fantastic reference, I am walking down memory lane as I type..... :D -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 7] Author : Extempus Date : 03-08-06 04:08 PM Archers are pretty deadly at higher levels, able to deal out incredible amounts of damage (especially at point blank range!), not unlike that of certain wizard spells... I decided to modify the class a bit to make it more distinct from fighters and rangers specializing in the bow; at levels 7+, those who specialize in the bow get 3 shots/round (same as archers), but at levels 13+, they get 4 shots/round and archers don't! That didn't make a lot of sense to me, especially since the archer class is all about the bow, so in my campaign, archers progress as do bow specialists, except that at levels 19-24, they get 5 shots/round, and at levels 25+, they get 6. So, Bael, perhaps adding an archer (with some modifications) might be quite useful to your adventure... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 8] Author : Bael the Bard Date : 03-08-06 06:47 PM Can someone tell me the stats of the archer class or what dragon magezine it might be in a pure archer would be greatly beneficial to our group. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 9] Author : Evergreen_Aldaron Date : 03-08-06 07:59 PM Originally posted by Extempus I believe all of our characters who can use the bow specialize in it. Besides, of the regular PCs, we have only one archer; otherwise, there are a few fighters, one ranger and an assassin who use the bow, so the archer doesn't unbalance the game. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 12] Author : Bael the Bard Date : 03-17-06 10:39 AM Any advice for fighting against drow and giants? I mean hitting them with a sword always works, but I don't know if I want to get that close to a giant. Also the drow have this nasty little habit of casting darkness and making it so we can't see. I know that light would probably be its counter but the cleric just wants to stock up on cures and chants and aid and such, so is there another way to cast light say by a wizard or illusionist. Ok thanx for the advice in advance. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 13] Author : Extempus Date : 03-18-06 03:40 AM If you're of a high enough level to use continual light, then prepare a few small objects in advance by casting it on them (you'll obviously need more than one spell, and it may take a few days to do so, depending on the cleric's level). They are obviously great light sources and will counter darkness spells; however, if you're in a dungeon, you'll still be without light as the spells simply cancel each other out. A good plan would be to keep them safely stored somewhere and use torches and/or lanterns as light, then pull the continually lit objects out to counter magical darkness. Of course, the cleric must be at least 5th level to use continual light, so if it's not possible, at least one light spell must be kept in reserve and cast as needed (since it doesn't last all that long). Wizards can cast light as well, but unless it's in your spellbook so you can memorize it, you're out of luck. Of course, maybe a visit to a higher-level wizard might be in order to talk about a spell exchange... As far as giants go, soften them up first (if possible) by ranged attacks: spells, arrows, crossbow bolts etc. If at all possible, concentrate your attacks on one at a time if it comes down to that; they can attack only once per round, but a group would get multiple attacks on the giant. Use stealth at all times, and don't be afraid to set traps if possible. If you can, hurl oil flasks followed by a torch. Since you have an illusionist, phantasmal force (if you have it) could be used as a distraction/diversion allowing your party to attack more effectively. Too bad you don't have a druid with a charmed animal companion. A bear, wolf or tiger could be very, very useful... Anyway, just some ideas off the top of my head. I hope they help and/or give you some ideas as well... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 14] Author : Bael the Bard Date : 03-18-06 09:35 AM well the wizards never do much any ways its been like this magic missle, magic missle ok i'm spent hide behind the meat sheild so we could ask them to prepare a light spell or 2. The 2 clerics we do have are too valuable a healing asset to have light spells memorized. Heck maybe we can partition the king who's daughter we just saved to lend of a team of sappers, that is people who destroy and build traps. If not then hell theres 2 elf rangers an elf rogue and an elf assasin in the party, I think between the 4 of us elves we can build some kind of a spike pit. I just looked and 3rd lv magic users can use continual light like a 5th lv cleric. That means 10,000 exp vs 13,000 exp for the spell but thats still a little ways off cause were around 4,000 ish exp. Something else I might try is flame arrows you know arrows wrapped in rags dipped in pitch perhaps. Or medeval molatovs just put a rag for a quick in the oil light and throw no torch needed. Then again theres another ranger besides myself so we'll do ok in the damage department for giants. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Downloaded from Wizards Community (http://forums.gleemax.com) at 05-10-08 08:16 AM.
