After using the training "fighter" from the red boxed set, my first character with a group was Brother Jasper. A cleric in a homebrew 1st edition game. Sadly, I played him more like a theif than a cleric. I'd check each door for traps, for example. He finally, after many months, made it to 2nd level. Then came the game session I couldn't attend, so the DM gave my character to a player who never checked for traps. SWACK! Trapped door carelessly opened and my 2nd level character I worked so hard on got a head full of Axe. :weep: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : realmaster Date : 04-05-06 03:47 AM Zor, a 1st ed magicuser. I had absolutly no idea what I was doing. My nephew was the person who turned me to AD&D and a magicuser sounded the coolest character to play. Burning hands was the spell of the day, purple robe, dagger and a staff. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : Extempus Date : 04-05-06 04:39 PM My very first character in September 1981 was Nachor, a magic-user. The DM wasn't particularly ruthless, but he didn't last long in the Caves of Chaos (a lot of others died too!). I wised up a little and generated two characters next time: another magic-user and his brother, a cleric (I figured he'd be able to cure light wounds and keep him alive long enough to make 2nd level, but even that didn't work). My third magic-user is still alive and well and ready for 23rd level... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 4] Author : Higmorton Date : 04-05-06 06:58 PM My first character was a halfling from the original boxed set named Detric Olar. He made it to 3rd level, when he was killed by a cyclops. Then I a created a mutli classed 1st ed fighter/magic user with psionics. He make it to level 14 fighter, 10 magic user. The character is semi retired and general of the kings army commanding over 10,000 troup. I think my most favorite was my wemic witch doctor 2nd ed. Neutral Evil, went to ravenloft developed a pair of gloves. When ever he killed a vampire he would yank the fangs and attach them tot he gloves. Needless to say I lost control of this one, because he is now a domain lord. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 5] Author : Evergreen_Aldaron Date : 04-05-06 07:11 PM Had a basic set elf named Neon around 1982....had no clue what I was doing. He flew by the seat of his pants while the DM (one of my best friends) tried to keep him alive. Needless to say, my fourth character created in 1985 turned out much better. A ranger that bears my name on this site is still going strong almost 21 years later. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 6] Author : WizO_Cat Date : 04-05-06 11:09 PM In the fall of 1980, my first character was an elf character name Harpo. (???) Of course, he was a Sleep/Web/Fireball/Lightning Bolt casting type. Eventually converted him to 1st edition AD&D. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 7] Author : goblin_gronth Date : 04-05-06 11:10 PM My first time playing i was the DM's only player and had to make five. Out of that five was a Gnome thief. while i was make him i was watching Hobbit and was thinking of a name and called him Sting Bobaggins. He lived a long full active life. Level 13 is when he retired with a tavern and his thieves guild underneath the tavern. :D The sad part is, that DM 5 years later got ****** at me and got ahold of my characters and threw them all away. I would still have that guy and no telling what level he would be at now... :( -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 8] Author : realmaster Date : 04-07-06 03:09 AM The sad part is, that DM 5 years later got ****** at me and got ahold of my characters and threw them all away. I would put a serious hurt on the person that throws my characters away. I also keep my old characters. I still like to go through them and reminisce on the old times and see how differently I run my characters these days. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 9] Author : Gazza555 Date : 04-07-06 07:42 AM I had a few characters at the begining that were basically just a bunch of stats - no background and sometimes not even a name! My first memorable character was Sir Treefear, a fighter in a homebrew setting. His main tactic was to hire a bunch of other adventurers, let them take the lead and collect his share of the loot. This developed to waiting outside dungeon rooms for the fighting to stop! He got braver after finding a magical sword and some decent armor. At somepoint the setting migrated to Mystara and he followed becoming an avenger in the process. He's still active as a BBEG in my current 3.5e Mystaran campaigns. He's a werewolf lord with levels of fighter and paladin of slaughter, (and he still has his magic sword). Regards Gary -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 10] Author : cerebus Date : 04-15-06 04:26 PM My first character, December of 1980, was a Basic D&D Thief. I didn't have a DM back then, so I just ran him up against random monsters. He died quickly and not at all well. His name was Morgan, after the sample character in the rulebook. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 11] Author : Glgnfz Date : 04-16-06 03:25 AM my first character was a male fighter (as the dm told me i was to stupid to play anything else... ). i don't remember his name but he survived the solo-adventure in the rule book - but then the dm had me play him in the party-adventure (in the rule book, too) - the problem was - there were no other players and the dm played the adventure by the word. if i remember correctly the fighter died before even starting the "real adventure" as there were a few goblins (or kobolds) with bows guarding the entrance who had no problem killing im with a few arrows. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 12] Author : TheMightyWarhamster Date : 04-16-06 10:59 AM my first character was created sometime in the late nineties (well, i *am* young^^) and he was a 2nd ed. half-elf fighter named cyrus. he had a cool backround, an inherited masterwork bastard sword and a cat, but i was only allowed to play him until the second half of level 2, because he sided with the evil guys after he got bitten by a werewolf (well, most younger kids dont know you have to eat belladonna to get rid of lykanthropy) and helped to burn the city he was originally hired to protect. that was also the last time i was allowed to play "chaotic neutral".^^ -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 13] Author : Glgnfz Date : 04-16-06 12:28 PM Thread Title : A question of age... (well, i *am* young^^) don't remind me of my age. i'm only 32 and when i talked about age with some pupils aged 14-16 they said that a "middle" age is from 20 to 30 and "old" age begins at 30! fortunately they thought i was not yet "old". :weep: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 14] Author : OGAM_engineer Date : 04-21-06 05:46 PM At what point did you skin the little whippersnappers? My second character died horribly killing his character. :D -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 15] Author : Glgnfz Date : 04-22-06 01:32 AM 1 hp?!? he could have killed himself clipping his toenails?!? :D -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 16] Author : KarmaSlave Date : 04-23-06 02:16 AM Thread Title : first character I have no idea what his name was or what ever became of him but: Back in '82-83 sometime I had an Elf. (it was a class and race then) We had absolutely no idea how to play DND. I had two lycanthropes as pets, I was an aquatic elf that the DM told me meant he was a sailor. We only used the D6 as we didn't know what the others were for. They were the old crappy orange dice you had to use a crayon to color in the numbers. I still have the d12 with my dice today. Someone mentioned still having their old characters from waaaaaaay back; I still have old characters from players I ran for ten years ago or more. I forget his name, and he had no back story other than he had 2 other brothers (the other 2 PC's) We all played as LG or CG but in reality we were soooo playing CE. We were about to enter a cave when some colorful flying snake warned us not to but one of the other PCs just threw a spear and impaled it and walked in. We found a Underground city and ended up makeing the people evacuate because we were killing the people randomly. Good times. Then my brother and I went on vacation and the DM lost our characters so we started a new game when we got back. By-the-way the whole group was age 8-11 -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 18] Author : Wyre Date : 04-23-06 06:05 PM First character? Lets see if I can remember that far back. Basic set, a lawful fighter named Bors, after a knight character in "Knights of Camelot" also a TSR product. Had losts of fun imagining him hacking away at kobolds in "Keep on the Borderlands". I remember when he got his first Battle Axe +1, some decent plate and a good shield, I was excited, now I was ready to do some real butt kicking. I'm pretty sure I still have the original character sheet around here somewhere. Probably stuck between the pages of my original books. Good memories. :D -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 19] Author : wrexham3 Date : 04-24-06 03:03 PM My first D&D character was a thief called Lazlo. This was back in 1984. I dont remember much about Lazlo's adventures except for his demise - after being killed by a monster his companions decided to test an unidentified potion on his still-warm corpse. Alas it proved to be 'Gaseous Form' and Lazlo drifted away on the winds, never to be seen again - which was kind of poetic I thought. Lazlo had a second lease of life when we started a new campaign in 1989. This second incarnation certainly had an eventful career. After getting trapped for three years in an elven forest, fighting vampires, thwarting an attempted regicide and travelling to ends of the known world, Lazlo was finally killed by a fellow PC while turning into a werewolf. I was so upset I nearly cried. But this was not the end of Laz, oh no. Another PC resurrected him after being granted a divine favour. Lazlo went back to his native Asconis, got hitched (a bit incestuous really as his wife was a back-up PC of mine) and took to running a pub. Things went swimmingly for them until the day Lazlo attempted to back-stab a dematerializing demon. His friends subsequently mounted one of the epic rescue missions to save him from the Abyss...inadvertantly causing a full-blown invasion of their own world. Cometh the hour, cometh the man, as they say, and Lazlo's finally came when he lifted the all-powerful Imperial diadem from the sleeping BBEG's brow. Laz survived the war, and is now an 18th level thief and joint-proprieter of the 'Wanderer's Homecoming'. He still turns up to NPC occasionally, as recently as the beginning of this month. Lazlo Callini, accidental hero, the winds salute you. Kudos to you. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 20] Author : Admrvonbek Date : 04-25-06 03:12 AM My first was an elven mage. This was back in 79 when we were playing the blue cover Basic D&D book that came with Module B1"in search of the unknown" and the coupon in the back for a free set of dice from your local store. What a deal! Anyhow, I only had 3 hps and had used my magic missle spell early on. Well after we found our way to the stairs back up to the first level, the rest of the party were all down to just 1 hp each. as we reached the top of the stairs we ran into four orcs. since I still had all of my hps left I charged into the fray with my dagger, Which is when I learned to forever afterwards start off with a staff. I died defending my friends from the vicious humaniod horde but I took all 4 of the bastards with me. I was bummed that my character had died, but what a way to go! My oh so gratefull party memebers then did what anyone would do. They went through all my stuff and took all the valuable things for themselves. Bastards! After that I started playing dual classed Mage/thiefs or fighter/mage/thiefs When we graduted to the Advanced D&D game and now have sevral really fun and somewhat powerful characters to use as NPCs in a Greyhawk Campaign I've been running. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 21] Author : IronCobra Date : 04-25-06 12:18 PM My first character, Basic blue book set 1979/80 (can't remember exactly), was Tesar the Good-a Cleric with an 18 str who I played in a very 'thump 'em and forgive 'em' way :). I converted him to AD&D to play in Greyhawk where he became a Cleric of St. Cuthbert and over many years finally retired at the ripe old level of 19 to become an NPC of great wisdom and mystery that I used like an Elminster type 'guiding hand' in many of my campaigns. The best thing about this character, which became legendary amongst all of my gaming friends, is that he never died even once, unlike their monthly trips to the temple! :P -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 22] Author : Urko Date : 04-27-06 12:14 PM My first character was created back in 1980, using the original whitebox set. Don't remember the character's name, but he was a centaur anti-paladin (hey, we were 11 year old kids!). I remember insisting that he didn't have to buy rations because he could just graze like a horse. All the rest of the party slept in trees at night and I demanded that they hoist me up there too. I think that character got eaten by a green dragon after only one session or so. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 23] Author : KVW Date : 04-28-06 12:55 AM My first character hmm well it was in 1981 My cousin was the DM I was only 8. I didn't last very long. I was a Gnome assassin named Grod My first adventure went from my character getting his eye popped out by a rot grub, then getting his ear cut off by a bug bear, and finnaly crushed by a red dragon. Maybe a 1st level character should not have been playing with a 9th level party. My favorite early on character actually characters were my Bard Omally and his gnome jester friend julio. I used to drive the others crazy from time to time. Omally was a huge womanizer I was 13 and going through puberty so you can imagine. Omally and julio are still around as NPCs in our game. I had to tweek him a bit to go from being a 1st edition bard to a 3.5 bard but then again I play him being 80 years old and still after young women it's a good comic relief. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 24] Author : Torpedo Date : 04-28-06 07:31 PM Using the Basic Box Set (Red) circa 1981 or 1982 (can't remember which exactly), I created a Halfling named Hawk (after the movie "Hawk the Slayer" which was showing round the clock on cable at the time). Funny how races were classes back in the basic and expert boxed sets! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 25] Author : Zaxon D'Mir Date : 04-29-06 03:59 PM My very first character was a simple elf from the Moldvay set in '82 when I was 11 years old. I believe he lasted two modules the first being Keep on the Borderlands and the second one escapes my memory (gettin' old stinks!). -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 26] Author : haruplue Date : 04-29-06 08:57 PM Let's see......I started with the example fighter from the Basic Set, moved on to a cleric, and finally an elf. None of them are very memorable to me, mostly because I never really got the chance to play them. I played each for no more than 2 adventures, and then it was my turn to DM again (for several months because my players weren't creative; they only wanted ungodly powerful characters *sigh*). -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 27] Author : BinaryProphet Date : 05-13-06 08:53 PM My first character was actually a T'sa, a race from Dragon Magazine, a reptilian creature with a natural AC of 4. He was a multi-class ranger/cleric (2e) equipped with a light crossbow, a scimitar and a dagger. He nearly died in our very first fight against a small group of goblins when a pixie ally shot me by accident (dang natural 1's on attack rolls). That campaign ended abruptly shortly thereafter due to the DM getting married. Interestingly enough, that group had two pixies, a T'sa, a dwarven wayfinder with Move Silently of 50% (more like a half-elf), and I think we had an elf battle-mage. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 28] Author : CharginCrusader Date : 05-13-06 11:05 PM Thief, named Zeltfour. Roger Littleguy. I was only 4 or 5, and didn't really know how to play. My dad DM'ed while my mom or older siblings told me to "roll that die". Eventually I grew up, learned to play on my own, and Roger Littleguy is now a retired 8th level/Attack Rank H, living in the Wyrmsteeth Mountains of Mystara. Not my first (not exactly even mine as I was the DM) was the default party provided in the same rule set, each had the name used as an example in the corresponding class's description. After the first party that played them broke up (it was a short lived game, and my first attempt at DMing), I went throughand upgraded them, providing back-stories and proper names... (the thief, Greegan, for example, became Greegan Mikov, a pick-pocket son-of-a-gypsy Tradadaran from the "mean streets" of Specularum). I've played this party a few different times with different peope, even converted to 3e... but they never last for one reason or another. I'm still looking for a group to play this party with me for more than a half-dozen sessions. I was 12, 1988 since we are all sharing. In fact I will be 30 in a month. Only used him for the solo adventure then made up something else. My most memorable character from 2ed was a Wild Mage, Psionicist, Priest of Mystra Half Elf who was middle aged. Boy he had an answer for everything the DM could throw at the group. Igneous Cobalt, I know he sounds like a dwarf. :) My most memorable 3rd edition character was a Cleric of Chardun from the Scarred Lands. God he was the most obnoxious cleric. The players plotted to kill me until I went to heal one after a battle when he hovering over deaths door and used an inflict spell on him, "Sorry guys I lost him." I charged one, haveing experienced these situations before, with my battle ax. We fell the beast, just to have it rise again. The other did the same and my party failed the neccessary saves to not wet themselves and leave the room. I made em. Great stories everyone! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 40] Author : Mobius Date : 07-18-06 11:26 AM When I was a kid (10-12), my parents got me the original blue box edition of D&D. That was back when D&D was levels 1 to 3, and AD&D was 4 and up. I didn’t understand the difference between a DM and players, so I rolled up a huge party of characters and marched them through randomized dungeons (using some provided tables). An adventure would last until the majority of characters were dead, and the survivors would flee with all of the loot and xp. I had one Halfling (back when Halfling was a class instead of a race) named Miribelle (I believe after a stuffed cow toy) that was the only character to survive several of these deadly dungeons. Eventually I figured out the multi-player part of the game, and I met other kids interested in playing. I incorporated Miribelle into my stable of pc’s. - Mobius -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 41] Author : an_idol_mind Date : 07-27-06 10:29 PM My first character? Well, it depends on what you consider a role-playing game. I played Hero's Quest for about a year before getting into D&D, and I had a character named Aman Elfstone, whose best friend was the party's dwarf, Gnali Ironhammer. My group bent the Hero Quest system a bit toward the role-playing side. When I got into D&D, all I wanted was an elf cleric with a sword. But basic D&D only had elves (not clerics), and AD&D didn't allow clerics to use blades. So I rolled up a new character: a halfling named Bulbo Bottlebottom. Bulbo was an assistant book-keeper. Being medieval times, his shop didn't do so well, so he turned to adventuring as a way of generating income and finding new lore. Eventually, I realized how stupid the name Bulbo Bottlebottom sounded, so I did a bit of retconning. I changed his name to Amadon Leaftender, and decided that he had written stories about his adventures, using Bulbo as a nom de plume. Alas, since saving Thunder Rift from a horde of goblins, Bulbo/Amadon has been in retirement. He still pops up in my campaigns from time to time, but always as a bookkeeper. It seems that his days of adventuring are now behind him. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 42] Author : paigeoliver Date : 08-12-06 02:50 AM I started playing in 1987 with the Red Box basic set. Unfortunately I was ALWAYS Dungeon Master, so I didn't have any characters of my own for a LONG time. I didn't get my first PC until last year. A female halfling archer named Julie Underhill (who was a recreation of a pet NPC I used to use to fill out the party when I didn't have enough players). She is currently 7th level (fighter, barbarian, ranger combo), and alive and well in the world of Greyhawk. She still isn't nearly as cool as the NPC version was. The NPC version had an apparatus of Kwalish, a folding boat, one of them reusable scrolls you stuck on a wall that turned into a room, and an Instant Fortress (Rules Cyclopedia rules), and was a level 11 halfling (optional 36 level demihuman progression from the RC). No one else in the party would ever pick those magic items that benefitted the whole party while treasure picking, thus Julie usually ended up with them. I literally watched people pick a scroll of magic missile over an instant fortress with the justification that "We will all get to use that anyway, so I am not wasting my pick on that". -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 43] Author : Ateth_Istarlin Date : 08-14-06 05:35 AM My first character? A Dwarf named Balin (in Basic D&D) - I remember rolling badly for starting money & ending up with Leather armour, a Hand Axe, A wooden shield, & nothing else! We didn't really know the rules so I ended up entering the dungeon alone. My DM placed an Ogre in the first room & I died after 1 round of combat. :weep: It took me more than a year to get a character past 1st lvl! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 44] Author : the_smoking_spell Date : 08-15-06 02:53 AM Your tellin me about bad rolling. I rolled a 1 for my hp. Luckily my constitutioin gave me an extra hp making a total of 2 hp for a dwarven fighter. too contrast how bad this is, my party was pursuing an assasin thru some hallways and Garret slipped on some oil and dropped to half his health. Thats right, i took 1 point of damage, and was at 1 hp. Time hasn't been good to Garret either. He is currently level 5 and has a wopping 15 hp. THE FRIGGIN MAGIC-USER HAS 14 HP, and she's level 4 i think. But that low amount of hp doesnt deter Garret from making horribly rash desicions. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 45] Author : Horemheb442 Date : 08-16-06 05:47 AM Thread Title : First Character My first two characters were both AD&D first edition. (Late '70s I think.)An elven fighter named Marbeleganon (Marby for short, he died pretty quickly, probably due to the name. It means "Jewel of the Great Gate" in Sindarin from the Silmarillian) and a thief named Bedyer Cliath. Bedyer was my first "18" (in Dex...so thief) but he had a 9 in Charisma. This later became a 7 when a firetrap blew up in his face when he failed to disarm it. :( This was in the roll three dice and play them where you rolled them days. He was always kind of lucky, though. He used a "Deck of Many Things" the party found several adventures and DM's later and got a bunch of experience and a 5th level fighter attached to him. The DM made her a very pretty (Charisma 15) girl and she fell for him. He was the third son of a noble family and normal "labor" was considered beneath him by the family. They weren't thrilled with the course he took but he was using his "talent" and not doing "commoner labor". He retired at about 11-12 level with his pretty fighter wife, an impressive reputation and a nice "nestegg" from over generous DM's. His wife by that time had +2 Banded armor. a +3 broadsword and nice keep he put together with his rewards. I still play AD&D, now with a group including my 15 year old daughter...and I just turned 58. I don't care for any flavor of third edition but it is remarkable how may people approach me to DM 2nd Ed. My ex-wife now owns a used bookstore and my daughter has her watching for and aquireing books of that ilk. :) Luck is when preparation meets opportunity. Mine was 1983, a human fighter named Atascii. Put at the front of the party by (much) more experienced players who seemed so surprised when giant lizards took double figure damage bites out of me & I died. That day i rolled up my second character, a human cleric named Haggis who still survives & has spent many years "persecuting" that same campaign. He had bagpipes (of monster attraction, they must have been magical they worked so well), OTT behaviour & outrageously good luck. Clerics - can't live with them, can't live without them. He became a bit of a legend in my own lunchtime. Friends & coplayers took up tartan, black pudding, brought me gifts of bagpipes from OS. I didn't even particularly like those things, but found Haggls' personality was grossly overshadowing mine. I deliberately developed alternative characters to try to distinguish myself from Haggis the Cleric. After about a decade he aspired to become a deity & started to call himself DemiGod. I was married to them DM by then, but he resisted my request "Is Haggis a god yet?". Other party members began to act "In the name of Haggis" (for example when descerating a rival temple area) without any prompting or direction from me & they took up the chant "Is Haggis a god yet?". When my children were younger they loved hearing about this generation of characters, many of the exploits have been preserved in song & poetry. I'm no longer married to the DM, but my delightful children still pester him from time to time "Is Haggis a god yet?". :w00t: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 49] Author : Moraser_the_Magnificent Date : 08-26-06 10:25 PM Thread Title : 1st 1st Edition Human Fighter, Named Moraser. A Grey Elf fighter. He was a sad, munchkin character in a sad, montyhaul campaign. He had 18/75 strength and 19 Dexterity. He had an intelligent sword of everything slaying (He started as NE but super-sword turned him CG). He was part of a sad, muchkin party that beat the holy crap out of everything they ran up against. We bashed out way through about half of the Temple of Elemental Evil before we got bored and wandered off (tactics: kick in door, charge in, slay inhabitants, move to next door; rinse, repeat). I recall one of the characters (an NPC actually, that the DM ran) having an artifact/relic at level 7. That was the second artifact/relic owned by the party. The only challenge we faced was when we beat each other up, or poisoned each other’s potions, or the thief starting backstabbing his own party members in the middle of a battle, or we destroyed each other’s magical items, or wandered off at night when we were meant to be on guard and let wandering monsters attack the sleeping party, or gave each other cursed items, or put magical traps on our magical items and then left them for other players to pick up, or infected each other with lycanthropy, or rubbed oil of disenchantment of my cloak of displacement before I went in to do battle with a room full of giants (damn you Kaldorf). Anyway, back to Elvaron. He was awesome. He fell in love with Alrac, the party’s Elven magic user (who was, quite conveniently, played by my girlfriend at the time). He built a huge keep and populated it with powerful monsters and traps (basically to defend it against the other party member who would inevitably seek to raid the castle). By the time he was level 10 he was already pretty much invincible and quite frankly, a little dull to play. I loved Elvaron. Probably the best thing about him was this: how not to play D&D. My first character taught me that the most enjoyable form of D&D is one that involves roleplaying, developing a character in the context of a complex narrative, and putting yourself up against challenging, difficult scenarios. That and don’t play with a munchkin DM. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 57] Author : protonik Date : 10-01-06 07:37 PM Thread Title : Re: First Character 1989, Kender thief named Salias Dran (it "meant" Silver Dragon). He made up the adventure while we rolled up characters - 3d6 in order. My older brother rolled up spectacular stats, and thus was born the half-orc Hrothgar. I didn't do nearly so well. After careful consideration, it was determined that my half-elf could only be a fighter. The two hit points were going to be a problem. Thus, Maximillian was born. (I had just seen The Black Hole, and the evil red robot had made an impression). I hoped an impressive name would help. My mother insisted on playing, and rolled up a cleric. I don't remember her character's name. We three intrepid adventurers were hired to rid the area of a dragonne that had been preying on villagers. It laired in some ruins, and we climbed up into them with our bows and laid in wait, having the cleric hide where she couldn't be seen to heal us up later. When the dragonne landed we let fly with arrows and wounded the beast, which roared in pain - and the fragile ruins we had climbed into collapsed. We each took one hit point of damage, which Hrothgar barely noticed but crippled poor Max. Mom's cleric came running up, took pity on the wounded dragonne, and healed it. I don't remember what happened after that - I think our DM gave up at that point. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 71] Author : nabuchadnysarII Date : 11-13-06 02:40 AM Thread Title : Re: First Character My first character was a human ranger in 1992.
