I've been playing D&D since the beginning (not really, I was about a decade late, 1984) but the Known World of Mystara to include the Savage Coast/Red Steel/Orc's Head and the Hollow World (That was a CRUEL joke to us old fans, btw) is absolutely the single best campaign setting ever created for any fantasy role-playing game. To wit: It is unique in it's design giving it the perfect balance of background and flexibility. It is more detailed than Greyhawk, less rigid than the Forgotten Realms, and DragonLance is virtually unplayable unless you absolutely ignore the Chronicles which the setting is based upon. It is the only published campaign world which evolved naturally, from the minds of dozends of different authors, designers and fans, provinding a realistic theme; as opposed to all other settings which were created as a whole all at once, providing a lackluster "invented" feel. It is built upon the longest, oldest, and best selling themes and stories of all time (real-world legends, myths, and epic fantasies from the minds of Tolkien and CS Lewis). It is the last campaign setting which holds true to the original design and flavor of the intents of the creators of the game. As such, we the undersigned (under-posted?) hereby demand (or kindly request, if you prefer ;) ) that the World of Mystara with all related campaign settings, cosmologies, and Immortals, be reinstated and re-published as a full-fledged campaign updated to the most current version of the rules-set, either in-house by WotC, or that WotC allows some third-party company license to do so on their own. Hollow World sounds fantastic, too! Honestly though, I think this would be more effective on the Paizo boards, as I could see Dragon printing some Mystara material before WotC. They used to say campaign settings were too niche, but now they've given us environmental books which could have been in one book instead of three. Niche, indeed. It is more detailed than Greyhawk, less rigid than the Forgotten Realms, and DragonLance is virtually unplayable unless you absolutely ignore the Chronicles which the setting is based upon. While I am very much in favor of an updated version of Mystara (it's my 2nd favorite setting after GH), I don't think "bashing" the other "oldies" is the way to go. GH may not benefit from a cartographer of Thorf's skills but we have just as many talented writers who have added to canon-lore as you do. FR.. well, I won't touch that with a 10 ft pole :P As for DL, that is patently false and indicative of someone who either doesn't know the setting that well or didn't adventure in it with a DM worthy of that title. Just because TSR's first DL adventures were all aimed at "playing the part" of the Companions doesn't mean you couldn't do something else, either during the War of the Lance or before/after. I ran a 3 years campaign there once that began during the WotL and my players - despite having all read the Chronicles - never had the impression there were "limited" in any way, nor that they couldn't do something as significant as what the "guys from Solace" were doing. I respect your love for Mystara (just as I hope others will respect my devotion to GH) but it's no excuse to disparage other settings in order to make yours stand in a better light. The Known World has enough qualities on its own that it doesn't need that kind of "help". At least IMHO... :nonono: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 53] Author : clenariusfr Date : 04-12-06 04:32 AM Thibault Sarlat (a.k.a Clenarius), loyal customer and player since 1985. I was stalled in my project, and was saddened my my lack of in-person games--our group was on hiatus at the time. I wanted, at that moment, that WotC would just publish a Mystara Core Book (since, at the time, I was making no headway) and then leave it alone (so they don't muck it up like everything else with too many suppliments). I think it's great... and amazing, that even now, people are still adding their names to the list. Now that I have made a significant amount of progress, and am nearing a draft-completion, my "want" for a published Core Book has waned drastically. I'm not saying to stop signing, as if they do choose to revive Mystara, I'd gladly give them my work (with proper credit, of course)... since I'm doing little more than compile it anyway--you guys have written most of it, piece by piece, although most of you probably don't know it yet--lol (And I do apologize in advance if I miss a name in the credits. I am trying to keep track of whose material I'm stealing, but a few notes have been lost in translation).
