The following is an actual question given on a University of Washington chemistry midterm. The answer by one student was so "profound" that the professor shared it with colleagues via the Internet, which is of course, why we now have the pleasure of enjoying it as well. Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)? Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law (gas cools off when it expands and heats up when it is compressed) or some variant. One student, however, wrote the following: We need to know the rate that souls are moving into Hell and the rate they are leaving. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different religions that exist in the world today. Some of these religion state that if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell. Since there are more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all souls go to Hell. With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially. Now, we look at the rate of change of the volume in Hell because Boyle's Law states that in order for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume of Hell has to expand proportionately as souls are added. This gives two possibilities: 1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until all Hell breaks loose. 2. Of course, if Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell freezes over. So which is it? If we accept the postulate given to me by Ms. Teresa Banyan during my Freshman year, that...."it will be a cold day in Hell before I sleep with you," and take into account the fact that I still have not succeeded in having sexual relations with her, then, #2 cannot be true, and thus I am sure that Hell is exothermic and will not freeze. The student received the only "A" given. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : Cthulhudrew Date : 05-02-06 05:15 PM Interesting, Wilhelm. That reminds me of an old urban legend I once heard: The One-Word Exam A philosophy professor gives a final exam consisting entirely of a single word: "Why?" One student answers "Why not?" and receives an A. The variation I heard was that another student answered "Because" and got a B, while the other students, all of whom ran the entire allotted time span for the test and wrote pages of work, got failing grades. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 4] Author : Traianus Decius Aureus Date : 05-02-06 05:49 PM Interesting, Wilhelm. Urban legends are soooo much fun! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 5] Author : Wilhelm_ Date : 05-02-06 05:51 PM Hehehe, I heard this one too :) Funny, the version I heard took place in Brazil, which looks like unlikely (or you propably wouldn't know this story, hehe) :) The same happened with this one I posted and the one Arcanda posted too. I guess this happens everytime this urbans legends are translated to another language :) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 6] Author : Spellweaver Date : 05-03-06 04:56 AM Interesting. Tonight it will be the turn of the motherboard drivers, graphics drivers etc., before the tedious process of re-installing all the software. All this to play Oblivion in graphical splendor. :D For the tech geeks out there, the new system consists of an Asus A8N-Sli motherboard, Athlon 64 x2 4200 CPU, Sapphire Radeon X1900XT graphics card. (It's perfect for my question ;) ) Is there a way to have a transparent colour in the Paint program? I have an idea of extending an old project of mine but kind of need to be able to apply a transparent colour over an existing image. Thanks for any help. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 12] Author : Traianus Decius Aureus Date : 05-03-06 02:28 PM Good thread idea! I don't think Paint does...but its been ages since I used anything but Illustrator and Photoshop. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 13] Author : Thorf Date : 05-04-06 02:04 AM I don't think Paint does...but its been ages since I used anything but Illustrator and Photoshop. I use those two too, and Paint Shop Pro 7 when I am just browsing images, because it's fast and doesn't take much memory. Paint Shop Pro also has support for transparency, but I definitely cannot recommend the latest versions, as it has become a bloated Photoshop wannabe. :( If you can get hold of an old version, though - especially 5 or 7 - it's worth it. And quite inexpensive now too, assuming you can find it for sale anywhere. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 14] Author : Hugin Date : 05-04-06 10:54 AM Thanks for help guys. It's not an urgent matter so I just keep my eye open for one of those cheaper programs. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 15] Author : Patrick Sullivan Date : 05-04-06 04:32 PM Interesting. He awoke in a bathtub full of ice water with rags tied around his feet. Next to the tub was a stick and a wand saying "Your toes are gone. Send up blue sparks to alert a medic." Of course, last time I DMed in Glantri, there was a rumor circulating that the Gorevitch-Woszlanys were vampires. Can you imagine?
