Here's an update of a post I sent to the MML awhile back. CAS's Averoigne Cycle is explicitly set within the shared-world of H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos. Therefore, "Laterre" would simply be a Mystarocentric term (French/Sylaire-derived) for "Cthulhu Mythos Earth" (an OOC term). The Mystarocentric term for the entire "Cthulhu Mythos Universe" would be the "Dimension of Myth". Here's a compilation of maps of various places of Laterre through the ages: Hyperborea: Laterre's Greenland pre-750,000BC (described in a CAS story cycle). No known relation to Mystara's similarly-named region of Brun, or to the land of Hyperborea of Laterre's later Hyborian Age (the Hyborian Hyperborea is the ancestral land of the Laterran Finnic peoples). Here's a couple maps of Laterre's ancient continent of Hyperborea: http://www.eldritchdark.com/art/inspired/display/4 http://www.eldritchdark.com/art/inspired/display/23 Thurian Age: Laterre, c.20,000BC. The age of Robert E. Howard's Kull of Atlantis. For a map of Thurian Age Laterre (including Atlantis), see: http://www.dodgenet.com/~moonblossom/Katl.htm Hyborian Age: the Old World of Laterre, c.12,000BC. The age of REH's Conan of Cimmeria and Red Sonja of Hyrkania. For roleplaying resources, there's a the new d20 RPG by Mongoose, a GURPS Conan sourcebook, and short-lived TSR-produced Conan and Red Sonja games. For maps of Hyborian Age Laterre, both continental and regional, see: http://hyboria.xoth.net/maps/ http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/pdf/conanmap.jpg Poseidonia, the last remnant of Atlantis, sinks c. 9,500 BC; featured in CAS stories: http://www.eldritchdark.com/art/inspired/display/22 Averoigne. Laterre analogue of the medieval province of Auvergne in south-central France: http://www.eldritchdark.com/art/inspired/display/25 (showing the province w/in France as a whole) http://www.eldritchdark.com/art/inspired/display/24 http://www.eldritchdark.com/art/inspired/display/9 http://www.eldritchdark.com/art/inspired/display/27 (a map of Castle Amber) Modern Laterre: At this late stage, Laterre's geography would now more or less parallel RW Earth's. The d20 and BRP "Call of Cthulhu" rpg cover three modern Laterran decades: the 1890's, the 1920's, and the 1990's. There's also a Steve Jackson Games/Chaosium crossover GURPS guide called "Cthulhupunk", which would conceivably portray Laterre in the 21st century. Maps of the town of Arkham are available here: http://www.baharna.com/cmythos/arkham.htm http://www.piscesallmedia.com/golden/images/arkham.jpg Xothique: A continent from a CAS story cycle in Laterre's ultra-far future, resulting from the subsidence and uplift of the southern continental landmasses. For maps of Xothique, see: http://www.eldritchdark.com/art/inspired/display/20 http://www.eldritchdark.com/art/inspired/display/21 http://www.eldritchdark.com/art/inspired/display/17 http://www.eldritchdark.com/art/inspired/display/1 Finally, here's a map of the Dreamlands, which not physically part of Laterre, is psychically accessible from Laterre: http://www.fortunecity.com/roswell/goldendawn/31/dream_r.html Shane Henry P.S. Shawn, could this compilation be kept in a Laterre section of the Vaults? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : stanles Date : 06-22-06 06:49 PM P.S. Shawn, could this compilation be kept in a Laterre section of the Vaults? of course -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : Cthulhudrew Date : 06-22-06 09:18 PM Also, while we're at it, Averoigne is directly referenced in the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, v.2, in the almanac-style entries at the end of the book. So there's that tie, fwiw. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 4] Author : ripvanwormer Date : 06-27-06 12:59 PM Worlds of Cthulhu #2 (http://catalog.chaosium.com/product_info.php?products_id=676), Worlds of Cthulhu #3 (http://catalog.chaosium.com/product_info.php?products_id=814) and Worlds of Cthulhu #4 (http://catalog.chaosium.com/product_info.php?products_id=862) have articles on Averoigne. Presumedly #1 does, too. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 5] Author : Shane Date : 06-28-06 03:03 AM Thanks for the links ripvanwormer. I'd like to read their geographic overview of Averoigne. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Downloaded from Wizards Community (http://forums.gleemax.com) at 05-10-08 09:22 AM.
