I was wondering in second edition was there any insectiod monster race like kythons, tyranids, or zerg? If so what book were they in.

Thri-kreen, in the Monstrous Manual: they had all the insect stuff you'd expect for mantis people (like compound eyes and a chitinous exoskeleton) as well as all the humanoid stuff you'd expect likewise (like oddly-bladed spears and a tendency for psionic abilities).  Anyhow, they're desert-dwellers with a real love for the taste of elf meat.

original AD&D's Monster manual II had another insect species as well. If you wish, I can see if I can dig up basic stats.
