Ok we just started up forgotten relms and well Its a big place anywho I was wondering how viable the out of print content in the downloads section is for use with current rules before I go sifting trough it? (Im also having the problem of not being able to find a copy of faerun's monster compendium at any stores near here so any seggestions for adapting MM1 monsters is also greatly appreceated.) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : Gryllmyre Date : 08-08-06 03:35 PM Short answer: maybe. Converting the old edition adventures to 3e might yield some scenarios that are viable, but so far in my conversions I've run into a couple possible problems: either the sheer number of encounters would level characters up too much (since most XP in 3e is from encounters, instead of treasure in the old versions), or the 3e versions of creatures are more powerful and raise the EL's too high (like giants and dragons). As for the rules, again, sorry to be vague, but you might find material that is either trivial, overpowered, easily used, or requiring conversion. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : oralpain Date : 08-08-06 08:00 PM Even if there are minor problems with statistics, the setting, background, and plot information may still be worth it. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 4] Author : Evergreen_Aldaron Date : 08-09-06 08:43 AM Even if there are minor problems with statistics, the setting, background, and plot information may still be worth it. No queston. Get as much as you can get just for the historical value of it if nothing else. The background, story lines, and NPC info will serve you well as you continue with the current timeline. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 5] Author : rogueattorney Date : 08-09-06 05:14 PM I've never converted anything from OOP D&D to 3e. My experience with converting things from 3e to OOP D&D is that it is not appreciably easier than just coming up with something on my own. I have reason to believe it is easier converting forward (from older rule set to newer) but no first hand knowledge. Sure, stories, settings, backgrounds, etc. can come from other editions. You can get the same from other rpgs, books, movies, tv shows, and so on. I probably steal half my ideas from old comic books. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 6] Author : paigeoliver Date : 08-11-06 03:11 AM If you are the kind of gamemaster who is good at running things on the fly then you can use the old stuff right out of the box with no problems at all. I can interchange books for BECMI D&D, 1st edition, 2nd edition, 3.5 and Castles and Crusades basically effortlessly and do it on the fly. The only edition I have trouble with is plain 3.0, since I never played that version and I am not well versed in the differences between it and other systems. However if you are the kind of gamemaster who works out spot and listen checks for everything under the sun and balance your kobolds wealth by level and such then you will have a bit tougher time. Lots of the old stuff is monsters-heavy and NPC light, which means it can often just be run as is, just pull your monster stats out of the current monster manual rather than the use the printed stats. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 7] Author : Elendur Date : 08-11-06 12:39 PM For campaign setting stuff and adventures, absolutely. For monster books it's a bit trickier since they are so stat heavy. It varies of course. The Van Richten Undead books are technically monster books, but they are mostly fluff, and so easy to convert. What types of things are you looking for? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 8] Author : Horemheb442 Date : 09-02-06 03:31 AM Thread Title : re:downloads You could just run it as a 1st/2nd Ed adventure. Why not? Then there is no converting and all the information fits.:rimshot: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 9] Author : weasel fierce Date : 09-02-06 11:02 PM Or get a copy of the outstanding Castles&Crusades from Troll Lord games.
