Håvard -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : Traianus Decius Aureus Date : 08-17-06 02:13 PM What would be the best non D&D RPG system to use with Mystara? Håvard That's like asking a parent which of their children they love more.... 1) GURPS- I've played a brief Thyatian campaign with this (using a lot from GURPS Imperial Rome for some good flavor). Its fun if you don't have to convert a lot of NPCs. 2)A modified version of the Storyteller system- Haven't tried it much, but it could be a very different gaming experience with in Mystara, especially for those that stay away from dungeon crawls -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : Oloto Date : 08-17-06 04:01 PM I belive the vaults has a great artical about useing Mage and other White wolf books in Mystara. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 4] Author : RobJN Date : 08-17-06 07:22 PM I've worked up some preliminary conversions to the Alternity system. D&D 3.x was nice enough to grant stats to the monsters, so that makes it a lot easier than converting from BD&D. What would be the best non D&D RPG system to use with Mystara? I don't know if it can be called a non-DnD RPG but I like Basic Fantasy Role-Playing Game. http://basicfantasy.newcenturycomputers.net/ --Ray. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 7] Author : Arakor Date : 08-18-06 10:14 AM Another one to look at is True20. It's kinda like D&D3.x as it should have been. http://www.true20.com/ -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 8] Author : Monteblanco Date : 08-19-06 08:33 AM I GMed a whole campaign in Mystara that took something like eight months using Rolemaster. But then, it is easy to move from BECMI D&D to RM 2nd edition. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 9] Author : havard Date : 08-20-06 02:29 PM Alot of interesting suggestions so far, keep those coming! :) I have GMed Mystara campaigns with GURPS, SAGA and TORG/MasterBook. All systems have different strengths and weaknesses to them. Basically, it is the time spent on conversions that is my main obstacle to moving to another system. Some systems I have been considering have been: * World of Darkness (The updated version of WW's house system) * RuneQuest (The new edition from Mongoose Games) * UniSystem (WitchCraft, BtVS etc) * D6 (by WEG) Håvard -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 10] Author : Arakor Date : 08-21-06 08:34 AM I'm currently running a Mystaran campaign using GURPS 4/e. I'm using a fair amount of Gazetteer material, liberally peppered with GURPS conversions that were inspired by Håvard's contributions in the Vaults. My player's have just gotten to Stallenford as Aralic was kidnapped, and I'm about to push them through "King's Festival, Queen's Harvest". One of the characters has Precognition and Phantom Voices so she sometimes overhears voices which may be talking to her. She beleives that the Immortals themselves are guiding her destiny (Overconfidence/Lucky). Once the characters get to relax, they have to puzzle out the conversation between Solann and his female superior regarding "three hidden away, three in the world; size become one, the binding undone." :plotting: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 11] Author : shadowelf Date : 08-25-06 11:23 AM The answer to that lies in the question "why do you want to use a different system?" I would choose GURPS also as a) it is my favourite system b) the sourcebooks are excellent for style, tone, mood etc (Imperial Rome as quoted is only one example. GURPS Russia might help Ethengar for instance.) A system is only there to help roleplaying in the setting. For that reason your favourite/most familiar system is probably best as then you can concentrate on the setting. (Unless your favourite is the wrong genre, obviously. I'm doubtful about using say the Traveller system). -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 12] Author : fanchergw Date : 08-25-06 11:43 AM If I were ever to run a game in Mystarra, or some personal variation thereof, I would almost certainly use the Savage Worlds system. It is pretty much the only system I like or use any more. Gordon -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 13] Author : The_Stalker Date : 08-27-06 09:59 AM Yes, I'm contemplating Mystara with GURPS 4e as well. Until I've been playing modified 2e player option rules (for more than a decade), but we're generally sick of it and want to play something else, which means a new system with new characters, but possibly still Mystara, since the players prefer fantasy, and I know Mystara better than most other fantasy settings. Haven't tried it yet, though, since my 2e campaign isn't completely finished yet - I can't convert the current characters, so we'll stick with my modified rules until we retire the old characters and make new ones. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 14] Author : sbwilson Date : 09-03-06 02:49 AM I've run a few Mystara based adventures using FUDGE (http://www.fudgerpg.com/fudge.html), but I'm not sure how it would work for a full-fledged campaign. I don't mind GURPS, but I feel that it can easily get carried away with skills for every miniscule thing...or perhaps that has just been my experience with it... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 15] Author : The_Stalker Date : 09-03-06 09:59 AM I don't mind GURPS, but I feel that it can easily get carried away with skills for every miniscule thing...or perhaps that has just been my experience with it... Well, I don't blame you, since that is my one reservation about GURPS too (well, actually I also think there are just a tad too few attributes...). There are just myriads of skills, and some even seem to be fairly closely related, yet separate for no particularly obvious reason. For example, why is Veterinary separate from Physician? I realise there are differences between humans and animals, but it still seems to me that a wound is a wound is a wound... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 16] Author : JohnBiles Date : 09-03-06 10:27 AM Well, I don't blame you, since that is my one reservation about GURPS too (well, actually I also think there are just a tad too few attributes...). But treating said wound is not necessarily the same for a human or an animal. Anatomy is often fairly different. A variety of drugs may work differently on humans or animals. Furthermore, with regard to disease, things are very different as well. Humans may be a kind of animal, but vets and human doctors each have a lot of specialized information that the other does not. For that matter, the same can be said of a Surgeon vs a GP. Or other specialties, etc. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Downloaded from Wizards Community (http://forums.gleemax.com) at 05-10-08 09:31 AM.
