Hullo all. I've got a game coming up this weekend that's got me a little apprehensive-- normally, I'm a regular Johnny Cochraine when it comes to the SRD, but the group that's invited me in plays 2nd Edition AD&D, about which I know next to nothing. I'm vaguely familiar with how THAC0 works, and I'm sure that the DM can talk me through his books once I get there, but at the moment I don't have much of an idea of what I'm going to be working with. Since I'm joining an ongoing adventure with a pre-existing party, I'd like to be prepped with at least a character concept and a vague idea of what to expect. As I can't track down a 2E SRD, online or on paper, I've got more than a few problems. I've heard that the skill system differs wildly and I've read all sorts of different things about "Drawbacks" and "Non-Weapon Proficiencies" and other such things that a 3.5 gamer can only hear about in passing, or by reading Order of the Stick. I'm not going to trouble you for a rundown of the game-- my one crucial issue at the moment is Character concept. As such, I would greatly appreciate it if someone happened to be able to list the Base Classes available in the 2E PHB, and note any wide variances between the characters' 2E and 3E abilities. Anything further would be appreciated, but don't knock yourselves out on my account. I'm sure you guys dealt with n00b stuff like this all the time on the old boards, but I couldn't find any threads with what I needed on these ones yet. Sorry to bother, and thanks for your time -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : godless_red Date : 10-11-06 11:37 PM Thread Title : Re: Little help with the basics, please? Some questions: What realm is it? What characters are you used to playing? Is the DM a power gamer? Do you want to build a ‘character’, or an optimized munchkin? The character classes are as you’d expect (I’ve included the key ability score next to each). Each of these have sub-classes (like Paladin and Bard and so forth), but these are the basics. Fighter (str) Cleric (wis) Mage (int) And Thief (dex) If you’re looking to play an uncomplicated character, then just play one of these. See what the party you are joining is lacking in, and perhaps pick up the slack. I think most parties can always use another fighter, and I’m partial to playing thieves when no-one else is willing. Only demi-human races can multi-class, if you are thinking of going that way. The good demi human/class combinations are what you would expect: Dwarf - fighter Halfling – Thief Elf – Mage Elf – Thief Gnome – Mage (Illusionist) And half-elves are a good all-round race that can work in most classes well. Good, reasonably uncomplicated multi-class characters would be as follows: Half Elf: Fighter/Thief Half Elf: Fighter/Cleric Elf: Fighter/Mage (however, the spell casting in 2e can be a pain if you are not used to it). Non-weapon proficiencies depend on your DM. Personally, I use them all the time. Ask the DM if they use NWP’s much, then get some advice on some good ones (spell craft is good for a Wizard, healing and herbalism for a Cleric, blind fighting for a Fighter, disguise or fast talking for a Thief, just to name a few). But look I can’t list them all here – you’ll have to get advice from your group. Good luck. Hope you enjoy 2E. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Downloaded from Wizards Community (http://forums.gleemax.com) at 05-10-08 08:18 AM.
