We can't seem to find a guideline in any of the manuals that we own. We have found mention that potion creation costs hundreds of gold (in the DM's Guide I think) but thought it unreasonable for a healing potion. Is there a reference out there for items such as a healing potion? I suppose that it would depend on one's campaign, but a spring-board would be nice! Thanks! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : Extempus Date : 12-07-06 12:57 AM Thread Title : Re: AD&D 2nd Ed - Healing Potion Cost? In the 1e DMG (p. 116), the guideline is the XP amount for any given potion is the same amount in gp that the wizard will need to spend on ingredients for the potion. If no xp amount is given, then it costs a minimum of 200 gp. If an alchemist is employed to help, then the time to brew and the cost is halved. Creation time is 1 day/100 xp of the potion, rounded up to the nearest 100. Therefore, a potion of healing (200 xp) would cost 200 gp and 2 days to manufacture, according to the 1e DMG rules, but a growth potion (250 xp) would cost 250 gp and take 3 days to brew. I hope that helps. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : Ferns Date : 12-07-06 03:55 AM Thread Title : Re: AD&D 2nd Ed - Healing Potion Cost? The "mention" you refer to in the 2E DMG (pg. 87), are the only guidelines you will find. By those guidelines, to create a potion you need 200 to 1000 gp of rather common ingredients, one or more special ingredients above and beyond that, which is/are harder to come by than just buying it/them from a local market (DM decides what those may be and how difficult they may be to obtain), and you need a laboratory with a minimum 2000 gp worth of equipment as well. If those guidelines seem unreasonable to you for creating healing potions, and you don't think lowering the cost and requirements will adversly affect your game if the PC's and NPC's can make healing potions cheaply and easily, then do so (I assume your the DM and have that power in your campaign). But don't waste your time looking for an "official" 2E rule that says what the DMG says on potion creation cost is incorrect, it ain't out there. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 5] Author : Wyrmbane Date : 12-09-06 07:38 PM Thread Title : Re: AD&D 2nd Ed - Healing Potion Cost? The Book of Artifacts has nice rules for creating all magic items. You can make it as detailed or not as you prefer. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 6] Author : red_phooka Date : 12-10-06 02:44 AM Thread Title : Re: AD&D 2nd Ed - Healing Potion Cost? Thanks everyone! Samual: That would be the "mention"! :) I am the DM and had considered making healing potions more accessable in my campaign, but would prefer to have my players keep on their toes a little more and not depend on potions. I know that a price isn't carved in stone anywhere, but wanted a rough guideline so that I can judge how common an item it would be. Ferns & Extempus: I will be sure to keep note of that pricing! I am just starting out, and still getting a feel for what is a reasonable availability. Wyrmbane: I do have the Book of Artifacts, but had not considered it for potions! I'll be sure to do that in future :) Cheers! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 7] Author : Wyrmbane Date : 12-10-06 07:28 PM Thread Title : Re: AD&D 2nd Ed - Healing Potion Cost? Glad I could help. Have you considered herbs? Great stuff, and provides more roleplaying opportunities. Makes the priests and mages even more valuable and versitale. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Downloaded from Wizards Community (http://forums.gleemax.com) at 05-10-08 08:22 AM.
