There were some criticisms that the monk was too powerful at high level, when it was first published. (I’ve never seen that as the case myself.) Our campaign has always used the Monk out of the Original 1st Ed Players Handbook. The Complete Priests Handbook does have the monk class in it. – called the “Fighting Monk” you can find a 2nd ED monk class in that book. Dragon Magazine had a monk that was popular - you might look that one up. There are also various other “unofficial” 2nd ED monks published on the web by other DMs. There was also a monk 2ED in one of the books published by WotC before 3ED came out. (i do not recall the name of this book) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : Extempus Date : 01-05-07 06:19 PM Thread Title : Re: monks That was in The Scarlet Brotherhood (TSR11374), pp. 73-74. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 4] Author : Horemheb442 Date : 01-05-07 09:27 PM Thread Title : Re: monks Try Oriental Adventures from 1st Ed. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 5] Author : Wyrmbane Date : 01-06-07 02:32 PM Thread Title : Re: monks 1e OA has the monk. If you want a monk that is effective, use the one out of Dragon. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 6] Author : Agathokles Date : 01-06-07 04:31 PM Thread Title : Re: monks The Complete Priests Handbook does have the monk class in it. – called the “Fighting Monk” you can find a 2nd ED monk class in that book. This class (or similar versions) is also available in other sources, such as the Savage Coast campaign book (online in the Classics Downloads section of the website), and, IIRC, the Player's Option books. However, it is very different from the 1e or 3e monk -- it's basically a Cleric who doesn't use armor (and compensates with a special bonus to AC) and has unarmed combat specialization. The version from the Scarlet Brotherhood book mentioned by Extempus should be more faithful to the 1e version. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 7] Author : Arcanda Date : 01-06-07 07:05 PM Thread Title : Re: monks The best monk PC is the one in the 1ed Oriental Adventures. It is very nice becouse matial arts are detailed very well. In 2ed martial arts are horrible, but in the complete ninja handbook they are inspired by the ancient OA. I always use the original OA monk, as he is the best. Fighting monk in the complete priest handbook (and in red steel) is awful! I also can't understand shaolin monks in eastern medieval fantasy... I use monks PC only in oriental settings, such as Ochalea, Shou Lung, Wa, Kozakura, Ethengar, Lamsa and similar ones. There is no place for shaolin monks between Charlemagne's paladins! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 8] Author : exorb Date : 01-06-07 08:13 PM Thread Title : Re: monks Looks like eveyone thinks the best two monks to use are the one from OA and the Dragon Mag. I've never used any of the OA stuff - is that a Players Handbook? If you could post the title of the book that the OA monk is in that would be great. Also if anyone knows the issue # of the Dragon monk could you post that as well? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 9] Author : Agathokles Date : 01-07-07 04:52 AM Thread Title : Re: monks Looks like eveyone thinks the best two monks to use are the one from OA and the Dragon Mag. OA = Oriental Adventures. The monk from OA is the same as that in the AD&D 1e PHB, AFAIK. As for Dragon Magazine, I don't remember an article with a 2e Monk class or kit, and can't find it in the online indices I know of. There was an article in DM186, The Other Orientals, that converted several OA classes to 2e kits, but not the monk. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 10] Author : Arcanda Date : 01-07-07 05:42 AM Thread Title : Re: monks OA = Oriental Adventures. The monk in Dragon was way better. You can find it in DM53 or BoD v3. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 12] Author : Extempus Date : 01-08-07 01:04 AM Thread Title : Re: monks None of us has ever really used a monk (other than one or two NPCs over the years), but my brother has a fighter/ninja who is more than a match for anyone unarmed... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 13] Author : harperman976 Date : 01-08-07 08:50 AM Thread Title : Re: monks well tahnk you all for the help it was great informant and has helped me out harperman -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Downloaded from Wizards Community (http://forums.gleemax.com) at 05-10-08 08:21 AM.
