Has anyone played it out before, and do they have any good advice for using it? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : jdarksong Date : 01-22-07 10:59 AM Thread Title : Re: Against the Giants: The Liberation of Geoff We started this several years ago, using AD&D second edition rules. As suggested in the book I started the PC's in Midwood, where they gained some fame in dealing with Seshey, the local fog giant, and taking care of a large spider infestation in the Oytwood. It took several full adventures (I remember running through half a dozen homebrew plus setting the Gates of Firestorm Peak near the Hellfurnaces) to get the PC's to a level where they could be any threat to the giants. The game unfortunately broke up (rl issues) partway through the Steading of the Hill Giant Cheif, but they were able to take on Nurok Fort first. The biggest change, really from the original is the 'setting' of Geoff. There's a lot more to the G series than just the three giant holds. There is a lot more option for roleplaying, espionage, and it give the pcs the chance to be the 'rebels behind enemy lines'. Also, the drow seem to lose their place as the driving force behind the giants in favor of the Sakhut Cloud Giants. The second time I ran a party through this, they opted to continue on to the D series (which is not covered in AtG: tloG), so I can't help you much with G4 or G5. Basically, it was a nice change of pace to be able to create characters from 1rst level and have them played to the point where they could take on the giants instead of everyone clamoring to make 9th level pcs to 'go to it' in the Steading. YMMV. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : jdarksong Date : 01-22-07 11:04 AM Thread Title : Re: Against the Giants: The Liberation of Geoff There also always seemed to be a much more direct link to the drow than to the Sakhut, what with the two temples to the Elder Elemental God and (obviously) the drow in G3. I never understood why they were still there in the remake since they shifted the focus away from the drow to the cloud giants. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 4] Author : jdarksong Date : 01-22-07 11:05 AM Thread Title : Re: Against the Giants: The Liberation of Geoff ::double post:: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 5] Author : dungeonmasterblog Date : 02-03-07 02:11 PM Thread Title : Re: Against the Giants: The Liberation of Geoff It's funny because I was going through my old stuff, looking for something, and I ran across this module. What I was annoyed with is I did revision that extended the giants series to the Cloud Giants and it was like they were reading my mind. Now when I tell people my campaign idea, they think I just ripped it off from this. I have to admit I really like the idea of an emphasis on the Cloud Giants being the instigators of the alliance. I've removed the Drow and put in my own contextual conspiracy of evil elves wanting vegeance. In a way the whole 'the demons are coming' thing is kind of tired. Greyhawk already had put in Vecna and Iuz, and I found by comparison the Lolth plot to be weak when finally revealed in the modules. However I know what you mean dungeonmasterblog. I thought of a conspiracy of evil vengeful elves before I actually read about them in an adventure based in the Forgotten Realms in Cormyr. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 7] Author : Yuntil Date : 03-04-07 02:41 AM Thread Title : Re: Against the Giants: The Liberation of Geoff I played it years ago and had a ball. I think we had five players around level 10. I don't really remember. 2 years ago, i revamped it for some of my younger friends and played it in 3.5. They followed the drow down into the caverns and ran straight into the City of the Spider Queen. That didn't go as smoothly as i had hoped. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 8] Author : Extempus Date : 03-05-07 10:39 PM Thread Title : Re: Against the Giants: The Liberation of Geoff I DM'd The Liberation of Geoff in 2005, and it actually went pretty well. Since we had ultra-high level characters, it was more about role-playing, planning and executing the plan to deal with the giants rather than just basic survival. There weren't many real problems, but each city/village required a different approach; since there were many fire giants, chain lightning was a favorite spell to deal with them en masse. One thing to remember is that, depending on how many years the giants have been in control (in my campaign, it had been about a decade), the giants will likely be complacent since their human slaves can't put up much of a fight and they've had little or no trouble for years, and this is something the characters seized on. Of course, if they're on foot or horseback (we had flying ships), news will eventually get around to the rest of the giants, so time is of the essence. Seshey and Nashu turned out to be helpful allies (and were the only giant survivors). It did bother me a little about the Sakhut just coming in and taking over just because, so I added a little something at the end that really (to my satisfaction at least) explained why: the avatars of Memnor, Grolantor, Karontor, Surtur and Thrym appeared at the end to announce to the characters that their experiment (ie, enslaving and eventually conquering all humans) had failed on Oerth, but that they would continue on other worlds and planes; Memnor says ominously that they may have won the battle, but not the war... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 9] Author : GoriceXII Date : 03-15-07 06:16 AM Thread Title : Re: Against the Giants: The Liberation of Geoff Interesting throwing in the Avatars like that. I'm intending really to use it as material for my campaign area more than just as is when it comes down to it. I think that what I like most about it is that it is a good variation on the typical sort of thing you encounter nowadays where ever effort has to be backed by some kind of demonic cult. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Downloaded from Wizards Community (http://forums.gleemax.com) at 05-10-08 08:21 AM.
