While I am certainly a fan of the setting, I am by no means an expert, so when Wes came to me minutes ago with a question I could not answer, I immediately thought of you fine folks! So then, we have a couple Mystara books from the early 90s with the choker in them, one from 93 and another from 94. Wes and I suspect those are not the first appearances of the choker, and we further suspect that a choker must have appeared first in a Mystara adventure or product. But we cannot name which adventure or product. Can you help us get to the bottom of this? Do you know the very genesis of the choker? :detect: Please help!!! (Also, if there were any questions directed at me that I've missed please let me know. It's been a few weeks since I've had the chance to come here.) Thanks everyone!!! :) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : gawain_viii Date : 01-23-07 08:46 PM Thread Title : Re: 'nother Question from Dragon Mike, I know it appeared in GAZ6 Dwarves of Rockhome (87) and DMR2 Creature Catalogue. I know it also appeared in an older module, but my wife is sleeping, and I don't want her to gete mad at me by rummaging through my books in the middle of the night. Will check later if noone else finds it first, Roger -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : Cthulhudrew Date : 01-23-07 09:59 PM Thread Title : Re: 'nother Question from Dragon AFAIK, the Choker's first appearance was in Gaz6: Kingdom of Rockhome, as Gawain says. There aren't any chokers in any of the D&D modules that precede Gaz6. There *might* be one in a book that post-dates it, but I don't recall any offhand. In fact, the only choker appearances I know of: Gaz6: Kingdom of Rockhome (1988), p 72 DMR2: Creature Catalog (1993), p 21-22 Mystara Monstrous Compendium Appendix (1994), p 19 Monster Manual, 3E (2000) p 36 Monster Manual, 3.5E (2003) p 35 Dungeon Magazine #99 (2003), p 18 (ToC says 42, but he's actually on 18) Pretty sure I've seen a couple in other Dungeon Adventures here and there (post 3E), but that's all the appearances I know of. I am nearly 100% certain that Gaz6 is the first appearance, with Aaron Allston (presumably) being its creator. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 4] Author : Arcanda Date : 01-24-07 02:52 AM Thread Title : Re: 'nother Question from Dragon In D&D Master Set, DM's book, page 42 you can find a list of all monsters introduced in earlier versions or in adventures. There is no chocker in the list! So, I'm quite sure that Gaz 6 The Dwarves of Rockhome is the first appearence of a Chocker. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 5] Author : Gazza555 Date : 01-24-07 07:17 AM Thread Title : Re: 'nother Question from Dragon Pretty sure I've seen a couple in other Dungeon Adventures here and there (post 3E), but that's all the appearances I know of. Oh- that makes sense! I think the Choker thing is for a project that won't be coming out for a while, though. Given the turnaround time on monthly magazines, I'd be very surprised if they were just now doing research for 144 (assuming it hasn't already gone to the printer!) I'm near certain that Mike was hinting at something else that might be Mystara-related coming out in 144 (which should be out in the next week or so, I believe). -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 12] Author : Eric Anondson Date : 01-25-07 02:54 AM Thread Title : Re: 'nother Question from Dragon Oh, yes, I move my prayer to Kagyar and I hope the Lord of the Mountains will answer my request: to see the names "Rockhome", "Dengar" and "Denwarf" in Dungeon 144...Not likely. My guess it has something to do with the next installment of the Savage Tide adventure path, co-authored by the same Wes who asked Mike about the choker. :) Here's the blurb for: The Lightless Depths by F. Wesley Schneider and James Lafond Sutter Ages ago, before the savage tide struck the Isle of Dread, the ancient Olmans waged war against the aboleth city of Golismorga. When the PCs journey deep under the isle to find the source of the shadow pearls, they discover horrors almost beyond imagining in a haunted underground city perched on sanity's razored edge. A Savage Tide Adventure Path scenario for 11th-level characters. So we got a subterranean expedition to a city once populated by aberrations (aboleths), and now... :coolcthul As chokers are an aberration I'm guessing the odds they make an appearance could be "likely". ... But who can say! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 13] Author : havard Date : 01-25-07 03:13 AM Thread Title : Re: 'nother Question from Dragon Not likely. But who can say! I was hoping for something in addition to the STAP, but I like it when they use the STAP to explore traditionally Mystaran themes. I hope the STAP makes it to a hard cover edition. I'll buy it even though Im buying Dungeon on a regular basis these days... There is an adventure for 4th level characters, The Munster of Morach Tor, set in the Evermoors in the Forgotten Realms. It involves a plan to save a person who is about to be sacrificed to a slimy god, the only person who can warn the town of Nesme about imminent attacks. The other is an adventure for 18th-level characters, titled Diplomacy, a battle of wits against some of the most cunning and powerful races across the planes. Just a hunch that the next installment of the Savage Tide thematically fits the choker. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 15] Author : Cthulhudrew Date : 01-25-07 10:43 AM Thread Title : Re: 'nother Question from Dragon Just a hunch that the next installment of the Savage Tide thematically fits the choker. Possible, but I still think it seems unlikely that they'd be working on #144 at this late a date, when it should be shipping soon. Plus, I don't recall any of the STAP thus far making direct reference to where things originated- it doesn't say that the Rhagodessa came from Basic D&D for instance. That, and Mike's sly wink at Havard makes leads me to believe that the Choker is going to be in the Ecology book, not in an adventure. [EDIT- Just checked on Paizo's website, and 144 is supposed to be shipping to subscribers on the 23rd of this month. So Mike's research definitely isn't for this issue, and hopefully we'll be finding out what he's referring to soon. I have my suspicions about what it is, though... :plotting:] -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 16] Author : Eric Anondson Date : 01-25-07 10:48 AM Thread Title : Re: 'nother Question from Dragon Mike's sly wink at Havard makes leads me to believe that the Choker is going to be in the Ecology book, not in an adventure.Good point. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 17] Author : MKMcArtor Date : 02-02-07 01:20 AM Thread Title : Re: 'nother Question from Dragon Also! Make sure to check out "Mask of Dreams" in Dungeon #142. It's set in Mystara, even though the intro doesn't say that. Look at the names used throughout. :) And yes, as Drew pointed out in another thread, #144 has Bargle! :D -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Downloaded from Wizards Community (http://forums.gleemax.com) at 05-10-08 09:22 AM.
