(Planescape) Okay, this is driving me barmy. I'm trying to figure out the size of Sigil, and the numbers are incompatible with the map. The only numbers that I've found are from the 3rd edition Planescape project over at Planewalker.com, which gives the city as 5 miles wide and 20 miles in circumference. Ie, lay it all out and it's four times as long as as it is wide. The problem with that, is that there isn't a single map of Sigil that is even close to conforming to those dimensions. The most official looking old ones have a 1:8 ratio, which would mean it could be 5 miles wide and 40 miles in circumference, or 2.5 miles wide and 20 miles in circumference. The one in the Planar Handbook is even worse. Perhaps "wide" means something other than I think it does, like the distance from one edge of the city, across the donut-hole to the other edge. I realize that Sigil doesn't have a set size, and Planescape is all about weird things that don't quite make sense, but I'm not really running a pure Planescape campaign, and out of game I'd really like to be able to have numbers that actually match the map. Does anyone have a good solution to this problem? (I don't expect there has ever been any official clarification...) Thanks for any help. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : Agathokles Date : 03-04-07 11:28 AM Thread Title : Re: Size of Sigil? Sigil changes size at the Lady's will, so one cannot give exact measurements. Also, maps are mostly not in scale (some buildings appear to be truly gigantic). 5 miles diameter and 20 miles circumference is the official Harmonium measurement according to In the Cage: A Guide to Sigil. Maybe the PS3e misreports 5 miles diameter as 5 miles wide, which obviously isn't the same thing. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : oralpain Date : 03-04-07 11:45 PM Thread Title : Re: Size of Sigil? (Planescape) I have a donut that is 5 inches in diamiter and 5 inches wide. Width and diamiter are the same in some cases/perspectives. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 4] Author : Agathokles Date : 03-05-07 02:23 AM Thread Title : Re: Size of Sigil? Sure, just not in this case (Sigil as depicted in the maps). -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 5] Author : Sword_of_Spirit Date : 03-06-07 06:09 PM Thread Title : Re: Size of Sigil? (Planescape) Okay, 5 miles diameter is workable. Based the mathematical relation between diameter and circumference, that would mean the diameter would have to be measured from inner "lip" to inner lip, rather than city surface to city surface. That would mean that the map's dimensions would be correctly interpreted to make the city (city surface) about 2 1/2 miles wide. I'm getting that 1:8 ratio from the maps (I think I saw more than one) that I've seen online, which I believe represent the original published dimensions. The map in the Planar Handbook is worthless. It's dimensions are closer to 1:13, which would be hard pressed to fit by any stretch of the imagination. Thanks alot! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Downloaded from Wizards Community (http://forums.gleemax.com) at 05-10-08 08:21 AM.
