Hi 'drew I think that 'primordial' doesn't mean that the immortal has always existed as such but rather came to immortality over 100,000 years ago. So yes Korotiku was a planar spider but gained immortality before 100,000BC, likewise for Protius. Although IIRC WotI stated that Kortiku was so old that he couldn't remember his mortal identity and Protius has existed for millions of years. Appendix 8 The Chronological Ascension covers this more fully explaining that not many of the dates are explicitly stated in offical sources. Abandoning Thyatis to follow Duke Stefan Karameikos III, instead continuing to remain part of the Church of Thyatis, Jowett and his followers decided to form a new church based on their own doctrine (i.e. those in force in the Church of Thyatis) and on the needs of the people of Karameikos. In short Jowett tried to unite under one flag and one philosophy all the Thyatian immigrants with the Traladaran natives, creating one religion appropriate to the new nation (Karameikos, not Traladara or Thyatis) and giving a new cultural identity to its faithful: that of the modern Karameikians (Thyatian and Traladaran fusion). Therefore the Church of Karameikos came into being, similar to that one of Thyatis, but with some characteristic aspects. Trying to make a break also in the local people without however losing the support of the Thyatian immigrants, Patriarch Jowett therefore took some traditions of the Church of Thyatis and began to elaborate till forming a new religion based on the philosophy of the “unblemished spirit”, a religion not directly connected to the Thyatian Empire (still seen as oppressors by the Traladarans) but characteristic of the newly formed Grand Duchy of Karameikos. This philosophy holds that no sin is too great to be forgiven with an act of sacrifice and penance (even if many converts misinterpret the doctrine and think they can do anything, so much will be forgiven). The dogmas of the faith of the Church of Karameikos are as follows: The acts of violence, murder, theft, adultery, lying, treason and the cohabitation without being married in front of Immortals are all sins that stain the sinner’s spirit. The use of magic that does not have its basis in the rituals of the church is only ignorant superstition that leads the faithful astray, and it must therefore be avoided and condemned The sins demand action and a ceremony of purification of varying severity depending on the sin, for purifying the spirit. The lack of will to clean oneself is a sin itself, punishable by removal from the church with the final result to permanently condemn to eternal damnation the sinner’s spirit, which cannot be more purified. The role of each in the afterlife is determined by the amount of sins reached at the moment of the death. It is the responsibility of the members of the church to spread the philosophy of the church among the non-believers and to carry the benefits to other people and in other nations The common believer has the fear of being separated from the church and the rest of the faithful because of his errors, accumulating the sins until the point from not being able itself more to purify, and for this it always tries to confess the own ones sins to the clergymen and to respect the punishments and the actions of contrition that come attributed to it. Therefore the influence that the clerics they exercise on the faithful is enormous, coming to know of all their errors and secrets, and it can therefore appear that some clergymen of the Church of Karameikos they ask large donations in order to purify the spirit of wealthy or of more the weak people, or that they take advantage of the information revealed in confession to their own advantage or simply in order to maintain the control on politics of the country (what that in effects happens regularly). That of the Church of Karameikos is therefore a religion set up on a rigid philosophical and moral doctrine (the unblemished spirit) intent on the improvement and purification of the spirit, and it does not astonish therefore that the clergymen philosophers are most diffuse (90%). Exists however a minority of monotheistic clergymen (8%) and polytheistic (2%) within the Church, since it also proposes to its faithful a pantheon of Right to act as an example for proper veneration, or Thyatian Immortals who embody the perfection of the theological virtues of the Church, used by Jowett also in antithesis to the proposed triad of the Church of Traladara (Vanya as an alternative to Halav, Patura as an alternative to Petra and Ilsundal as an alternative to Zirchev) and for attracting the sympathy of the demihuman population of Karameikos (hence the introduction of Kagyar and Ilsundal as generic patrons of crafts and nature). In this sense therefore, Asterius embodies the ideals of Tolerance and Peace that prosperity provides, Kagyar those of Honesty, Talent and Work, Ilsundal symbolizes Wisdom and Purity, Vanya Courage and Defence of the Valorous, and Patura embodies Maternity, Fertility and Charity. The church doesn’t therefore worship one Immortal over the others, and doesn’t impose to its own faithful any worship, but to only follow the virtuous model of the Right. The Church of Karameikos in addition not condemnation the other faiths vehemently (also in order not to unleash internecine struggles in Karameikos), preferring to address the contempt of its faithful towards the demons and sin in general, and in particular against the figure of the Grim Reaper (Thanatos), father of all the vices that constantly tempt the spirits of the faithful and to which it is necessary to resist in order to not be damned and lose their own spirit. Order of the Griffon The Order of the Griffon is the military branch of the Church of Karameikos and clerics, fighters and paladins are able to be part of it. Belonging to this order is an act of great prestige for a Karameikan fighter; inasmuch as its members are always engage in adventures in favour of the Church, the nation and the common people, and for this, each year many combatants seek to enter. The aspiring members are presented to Patriarch Jowett of Specularum and he entrusts to each a supervisor of the Order, who tests their combat ability, their knowledge of Karameikan doctrine and their character. To all effect, in order to become a member of the Order of the Griffon an individual must possess the following requirements: Have a good combat ability (be at least 5th level). Must be a follower of the Church of Karameikos. Make a solemn oath to fulfil the tasks of the Order and to respect his superiors. The sex of the aspirant is not influential, but they do not admit humanoids or monstrous creatures, nor thieves or arcane spellcasters. In case he is admitted, these are the responsibilities of a member: Donate 25% of his own income to the Church of Karameikos as part of the Order of the Griffon. Obey the dictates of the Church of Karameikos with regard to sins and purifications. Accept missions and the duties assigned to you by the Patriarch of the church or by his superiors of the Order (these missions are often adventures or military missions in the interests of the Order, of the Church or of the nation). The benefits for a member of the Order of the Griffon are as follows: Asylum: possibility to ask asylum in any consecrated temple of the Church of Karameikos or building property of the Order of the Griffon. Respect: a Knight of the Griffon can treat all of the Karameikians as if he were a noble knight (faithful to the crown of Karameikos), despite his real social rank, given the respect and admiration that the Order enjoys within the nation and he could therefore be accommodated by nobles and to take part to their adventures. Brotherhood: a member of the Order enjoys the company and the friendship of his confederates, that they will become his friends and do their utmost in order to help him in moments of need with spiritual, military or economic assistance. All the members of the Order of the Griffon are called Knights of the Griffon and always bear a symbol that declares their membership (a white rampant griffon on a black field), which can be anything from a simple cloak pin, to an elaborate medallion, to a worn tabard or to a picture on a shield or on the armour. A member can resign at any time, or to be banished if he does not honour his own responsibilities. Note: In GAZ1 and in the Poor Wizard’s Almanac 2 the Church of Karameikos is described as a lawful religion based upon the philosophy of the “unblemished spirit”, without naming particular Immortals worshipped by its clergymen. Later on in Dragon Magazine, Bruce Heard (editor of the Mystara line) specified that the Immortals worshipped the clerics of this religion are: Asterius, Valerias, Vanya, Chardastes, Ilsundal and Kagyar. The church pursues the objective to bring back Traladara in this age thanks to the veneration of the three Immortals and of the moral lessons embedded in the Song of Halav, trying to grant well-being to its faithful and of combating the malignant forces that plot the fall of the Traladarans and their protectors. The malignant forces are especially identified in the Immortals that protect the humanoids that have threatened or invaded Traladara (in particular in Ranivorus, patron of the gnolls which caused the end of the golden age), and in the Goat (Orcus), a sinister being responsible for acts of brutality and violence and protector of all the monster that are hidden in the shadows (like undead and lycanthropes). With depreciation and hatred are considered also the sects and nations that aim to weaken or destroy the Traladaran people and the faithful of Halav, Petra and Zirchev. According to the Traladaran doctrine, these are the absolute dogmas that must be respected by the believers for to obtain salvation and divine favour: The events described in the Song of Halav are absolutely true. King Halav, Queen Petra and Zirchev are now Immortals that guide the righteous and punish evil within the lands inhabited by the Traladarans. Injuring, abusing, killing and lying are sins, committed out of weakness or as a result of the intrusion of evil or animal spirits. The sins would have to be punished with punishment appropriate to the seriousness of the sin, including both corporal and spiritual punishment. The more serious sins like murder and demon worship are redeemed only with death. The evil are all those who plot to destroy the Traladarans and for hindering or offending the faith in Halav, Petra and Zirchev. All the humanoids are evil, as testified in the Song of Halav, and all their Immortals are responsible for the evil and pain spread in the world. Therefore humanoids and their protectors must be fought and destroyed everywhere it is found for the good of peace and humanity. The use of ritual magic (like the reading of tea leaves, palms, cards or animal entrails, the use of charms or philtres) represents an expression of opinion of human curiosity towards the world and is accepted only when it is aimed at the will of the protectors from evil or to the improvement of the human condition. The use of such means is sometimes rewarded by the Immortals with moments of future knowledge or about the nature of the world, but only in the cases in which the heart of he that fulfils or seeks them isn’t stained by evil or immoral desires. The role of the individual in the netherworld is determined by the wisdom, faith and goodness of the individual at the moment of his death. The golden age of Traladara will only return if the faith in Halav, Petra and Zirchev remains steadfast and when all the believers respect the dogma of the church. In short therefore, the philosophy of the Church of Traladara is that the people do not have to do evil with others but live peacefully in respect of the neighbours and of the Immortals, and if someone transgresses, the community must punish the guilty party in proportion to his sin. Therefore the private relations between men and women or within the family are matters with which the church does not get involved, unless the aforementioned sins occur. The role of the Traladaran cleric is to supply counsel to the young based on their own experiences and on the moral lessons contained in the Song of Halav, let alone to resolve disputes thanks to their own wisdom and protect the faithful from the hidden dangers of demons or of their more direct servants. The Traladaran clerics therefore advise the young, officiate marriages and funerals, gives moral judgments, preach the philosophy of the church trying to promote peace and harmony, and when helping the fight to save life in danger and to defeat evil. The clergy of this Church is divided fairly equally between polytheistic (50%) devotees to the triad, and specialist (45%) followers to one of the Immortals (especially Halav and Petra), with a minority of philosophers (5%). The clerics of the Church of Traladara can be recognized by the frock they wear on formal occasions, this consists of a brown long sleeved tunic with a habit that reaches to cover the knees, a pair of leather boots, a knotty stick like symbol of membership and the coat of arms of the church (a stylized fighter in Traldar armour armed with a spear and a shield, with a sun on the background to its left) embroidered on the chest. The Cult of Halav is a church that was founded by Sergyev, a member of the Church of Traladara, following a vision in which he saw Halav come down to earth and revealed as being returned to life in the person of Stefan Karameikos III, in order to bring back his favourite Traladarans from the Golden Age. After having revealed his vision to a superior and having been mocked, Sergyev decided to leave the order and to found his own cult dedicated to the worship of Halav in his embodiment as Stefan Karameikos, and thanks to his fervent sermons and to his magnetic personality, succeeded to gather around himself a small number of faithful and other clergymen, indoctrinated with the three beliefs of this faith: King Halav, died on the field of battle in the final clash with the king of the beastmen, has been taken by the Immortals, to be resuscitated, healed and put asleep. The aim of the Immortals is to return Halav to Traladara when the moment is right to return the nation to its ancient glory. The Immortals have decided that the moment has been reached and they have sent the spirit of King Halav into the baby Stefan Karameikos III, so as to make him the new King of Traladara. Actually the cult is dedicated to the idea that the Duke transforms Traladara from new into a powerful nation and will equip the armies to conquer the entire world. The prime objective of the Cult however is still to convince all, including Duke Karameikos, on the truth of this prophecy, this has yet to happen. But in spite of the frustrating position in which they have been relegated, accused of being visionaries and lunatics by the majority of Karameikans, its members are very determined and well indoctrinated by Sergyev, and wont give up. In particular, even if they can seem at first sight excited and crazy, these clergymen are, however, able to cast divine spells, a clear sign that they enjoy the favour of the Immortals (and of Halav), this gives them strength and makes them sure of the truthfulness of their own theories. Only a small part of the Traladarans of Karameikos (about 1%) belongs to this cult.
