I’ve been running the 1st edition AD&D module Descent into the Depths of the Earth, with plans on continuing with the rest of the modules. My idea is to use a settlement of vampires located in a central “hub” within a few miles of the cities of the underdark. I surmised that the underdark would be a perfect place for vampires to thrive; no sunlight, plenty of food and no embarrassing questions when people go missing. Anyways I was thinking of either using the vampires as unlikely allies or outcasts fearful of discovery from their former masters or just another dangerous enemy they can use against the other evil races in the underdark. I have not decided yet to do with the vampire settlement but whatever I do I would like some constructive criticism on the vampire idea. Any suggestions and/or ideas would be most helpful. Thank you in advance! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : Agathokles Date : 04-05-07 09:05 AM Thread Title : Re: Please critique my plot idea I surmised that the underdark would be a perfect place for vampires to thrive; no sunlight, plenty of food and no embarrassing questions when people go missing. Indeed. There's also shortage of garlic ;) Anyways I was thinking of either using the vampires as unlikely allies or outcasts fearful of discovery from their former masters or just another dangerous enemy they can use against the other evil races in the underdark. That's a wide range of possibilities. Note that the vampires may not be very happy of having PCs running around and killing their food. I have not decided yet to do with the vampire settlement but whatever I do I would like some constructive criticism on the vampire idea. Any suggestions and/or ideas would be most helpful. The idea of using them as a "lesser" evil seems good. Then the actual use in play (unlikely allies or cannon fodder) depends on what your PCs decide to do (parley vs. attack on sight). -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : emeriliath Date : 04-05-07 11:01 AM Thread Title : Re: Please critique my plot idea One option might be to make the vampires of an underground race, say drow. After eliminating some important folk (say high priestesses), the vamps were chased out of the city. Maybe the vamps are need to attack the city to retreive their coffins (or death could be permanent for them). Possibly they are driders on a mission to do as much damage as possible to Lolth's servants. There are many possibilities down there. Maybe they're the drow remnants of a defeated house, out to seek revenge. The creatures could even pretend to not be vampires (drow don't look too pale). I would recommend using helms to hide their features. Also, if appropriate, make them use a heat/light source. In my campaign, undead don't necessarily show up on infravision (case by case basis). -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 4] Author : True_Atlantean Date : 04-14-07 06:32 AM Thread Title : Re: Please critique my plot idea What if, following on from the Drow vampire idea, the entire communirty is made up of males who have seen the vampiric condition as the only way to gather power in a society where they are little more than fodder. They have a grasp of their powers, but at the moment, lack direction. They want to strike back at the Drow priestesses and their society in general, but are still formulating their plans and gathering allies. The settlement could even be a sanctuary for the Underdark's dispossessed - with the vampires at the head of the pecking order and a small percentage of those seeking sanctuary are fed upon. When the PC's arrive, those 'in charge' of the operation may see an alliance with those who know the surface as useful. Do the PC's ally with an evil in order to achieve good? What exactly do the vampires want and what could the PC's want from them. The only consolotion the PC's do have is, if the vampires want surface allies, is that they aren't being slated for being turned. Just a few ideas.... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 5] Author : jimpaladin Date : 04-22-07 07:03 PM Thread Title : Re: Please critique my plot idea Sounds great, I think I would use them as allies. This way the pcs get duped into help evil. Always a good device, obviously the next question is whether surface races or not or mixed. I would go with a few at one time surface dwellers since otherwise would the vamps not see the pcs as another food source moving in. They could then use the pcs as cover for what they have done/are doing and the pcs can't do a thing about it. The Drow vamp males is good, as would ANY slave race of the Drow. What about deep gnomes or even dwarves/duegar. Dark ones are also an idea. Let driders be as slaves to them in a twist too. Makes the players think anyway.
