Sorry, this is probably the wrong place but I don't know where else to put it. Is it legal to copy OOP books you own, just for personal use? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : havard Date : 04-08-07 12:59 PM Thread Title : Re: Copying Books Just a question out of curiosity. Sorry, this is probably the wrong place but I don't know where else to put it. Is it legal to copy OOP books you own, just for personal use? Probably depends on where you are from. For personal use, you can copy anything you want in Norway. Probably the same in Sweden. Not sure about everywhere else. Have fun :) Havard -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : Vampirelord Date : 04-08-07 01:14 PM Thread Title : Re: Copying Books Oh, its national? I thought it had to do with TSR's rules or something, lol. I figured if you bought a PDF, it's probably legal to print it as many times as you wish, so it makes sense if it would be the same thing with books. Well thanks my scandinavian friend.:D -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 4] Author : mysticpot31 Date : 04-08-07 05:27 PM Thread Title : Re: Copying Books I download the 1st edition and 2nd edition books for free. I am not very fond of paying inflated prices and shipping from E bay and well TSR isnt losing money since they are defunct and wizards isnt either since they are not printing 2nd edition stuff anymore so I feel its fine. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 5] Author : havard Date : 04-08-07 05:41 PM Thread Title : Re: Copying Books I download the 1st edition and 2nd edition books for free. I am not very fond of paying inflated prices and shipping from E bay and well TSR isnt losing money since they are defunct and wizards isnt either since they are not printing 2nd edition stuff anymore so I feel its fine. Downloading books (except those available for free at WotC's site) for free does mean WotC is losing money since they are selling those pdfs (through companies like paizo). While technically legal in some countries, it doesn't help the industry :( Havard -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 6] Author : True_Atlantean Date : 04-09-07 07:19 AM Thread Title : Re: Copying Books For pdf files, you'd need to read the licensing of the actual product. As far as copyright for printed material goes, the differences are national. In Australia, for example, we may only copy 10% or one chapter of any printed material, even for personal use. However, it is one of those legal areas that is ridiculously hard to police and prosecute if you are legitimately copying to use at home, and aren't distributing or selling the product. I'd suggest checking out your local copyright laws through your national government's website. That will clear matters up and ensure that you're on the right side of the law. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 7] Author : mysticpot31 Date : 04-09-07 10:55 AM Thread Title : Re: Copying Books They have them for sale on the paizo page??? But the question is, does this count as literature? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 9] Author : spyone Date : 04-12-07 12:01 PM Thread Title : Re: Copying Books Well, here's my thinking: I know it is legal to make a cassette tape copy of an album I own (to listen to in the car, for instance). BUT, it is illegal to ever be using both of them at once: if I'm using the tape in the car and my roommate puts my album on the stereo, that's illegal. If I loan out my album, I can't listen to the tape while it's on loan. And if I sell the album, I either give the tape away with it or I destroy the tape. Same with software: I can make a copy of the disks for daily use and put the originals away someplace safe, but I can never be using more than one copy at once. So, I extend this to books: it is within my legal rights to photocopy the book for my own use (so I can put my original away someplace safe), but I can never be using both copies at once. Say, a group of friends come over to roll up characters, and I hand one of them my photocopy of the equipment list and then I give another the book so he can check the spell lists: that would be illegal. I doubt anybody would be looking to prosecute me, but I do prefer to keep my behavior within the bounds of the law when possable, if only so I can make photocopies of books without feeling guilty. :) Once upon a time, I played one of those RPGs that wound up with dozens of books, each of which contained a few character classes and a few skills. I had them all photocopied, and put all the classes together, then all the skills together, and so on, and filled 3 very large 3-ring binders with those pages in page-protectors. And I put my books away in boxes, and took the binders to gaming sessions. So if what you're thinking of is something like that, I definitely think that would be legal. But, remember that I'm not a lawyer, and I could be wrong. And that being right does not always spare you costly legal action. :) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 10] Author : havard Date : 04-13-07 07:58 AM Thread Title : Re: Copying Books Spyone, I am not a US citizen, and this varies from country to country, but for most Western countries I assume what you say is basically true. However, I suspect there is something like fair use and some of your examples seemed a little like extreme law abidance. I certainly would have no qualms about bringing a photo copy of some pages from the PHB and the PHB to a gaming table to increase the pace of the game. Making money off the copies is the big no-no though.
