It also may be used to create the fabulous elven lightship and oil of sunlight described below. This large, intelligent tree may be mistaken for a treant. It cannot be moved, nor can it move itself, except by an elven Treekeeper. It can only be left or found unattended if an entire clan is destroyed. Most elven styrongholds will pay 20,000gp or more for accurate information about the location of a living clanless Tree. An elven Treekeeper, Clanmaster, and several aides (all maximum level) may use a Tree of Life to create the famous but extremely rare elven lightboats, in the following manner. The Treekeeper draws one ounce of sap (at most) each month from the Tree of Life, distilling it to a single drop of golden liquid. Extreme care must be taken lest the Tree be harmed by the drawing of the sap(which could seriously reduce or negate its special powers). With teh help of the Clanmaster and aides, the Tree's branches are guided so that a few leaves of perfect paper-smooth texture are grown each year. The distilled sap is mixed with the powdered leaf veins, creating oil of sunlight- the distilled essence of light itself. The process can only produce one ounce of oil per year. Other perfect leaves are carefully pressed into the shape of the lightship hull, and enchantments (known only to the Treekeeper) re cast upon it. At the right moment of the year, the oil is spread on the specially prepared hull, and the final enchantments are cast. If all goes well, the lightship is then complete, able to fly through the air at 360' per turn as long as it remains in sunlight (which propels it). One hundred ounces of oil are needed for each lightship; each lightship can carry ten elves. The oil cannot be created by any other means, magical or otherwise, including a wish. Elven clans can also construct magic bows, arrows, swords, and other items typical to elves by using a Tree of Life. Cost and time for construction is left to the DM's discretion. This info is taken from the Rules Cyclopedia p 146, 1991. It's the only mention of the Tree of Life in the book. I don't know if it's more or less than what you've got, but I hope it helps. PS: When you said old school, I thought you meant the 1974 set, so I trotted to my shelf and started rooting through the books before remembering that you mentioned the Rules Cyclopedia...duhhhhhhhhhhh....! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 10] Author : atlarman Date : 05-29-07 12:47 AM Thread Title : Re: Tree of life...old school ShiftKitty, Thanx very much 4 your help. I also found the info you posted within the pdf 4 "Rules Cyclopedia",however this info doesn't provide the level of detail I was refering to...specific info about the pysical dimensions of a tree, its aura of protection( I.E: how close can an uninvited indvidual get to the tree before it teleports them away?) treekeeper lore and the like... For some reason I remeber this info close 2 the entropy Immortals pic,but it could be in dming section or even some where in the campaigning section or something!! It has been a LONG TIME,but I know its there somewhere.(There is the off chance I could be thinking of the CREATURE CATALOUGE**GREEN COPY**but this is not likely,I also believe that this info was possibly sub-topiced LORE in one of the dming themed chapters...I am sure its somewhere in one of those books and I leaning toward the cyclopedia...THANX AGAIN,& any further help is GREATLYappreciated!!! atlarman -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 11] Author : atlarman Date : 05-29-07 12:58 AM Thread Title : Re: Tree of life...old school hey guys... As well as the black basic boxset and the GREEN Creature Catalouge) This is to say, that to my knowledge,"Oficial rules/mechanics" for things we now call..."muti Classing","Bonding w/magic items","feats"and even to a lage degree "skills" were years away from existing in print.(Although a limited system of class based skills was in place using tables by class and a d% roll) Pretty much,as has been expressed on many forums here...TSR (wisely) gave you a "loose" overall mechanic framework w which to resolves things...once a person understood the intent behind this "frame work",you were off & running! creativity & imagination were the only "limits"/the game's framework & good common sense were all was needed 4 "game balance"! ...When I (and my DM) felt my grasp of the game's concepts were firm, then the imagination soon kick in,I was set free to "run with it", within the broad guidelines of "the rules' of course! Ingeed I did run w it!!! (haven't stopped yet! Though the "rules" are slowly approaching the places that I & my DM have been calling home 4 sometime now... as u well see,If u read on!! CONTUNED IN MY NEXT POST!! (There IS a point, but alot of ground to cover...so until next post...Best wishes 4 u & your characters!) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 14] Author : D'harhan Date : 06-15-07 11:12 AM Thread Title : Re: Tree of life...old school To quote a friend: "Caps lock is cruise control for awesome!" -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Downloaded from Wizards Community (http://forums.gleemax.com) at 05-10-08 08:21 AM.
