Hello all:

Much to my delight, I have been asked to join an online campaign in which the DM has converted the original Temple of Elemental Evil mini-campaign. I have never had the pleasure, so I am quite happy about this. (c:

Now, I am the last to come to the game, and as the party has no fighter-type, the DM has requested I play a barbarian character. Having never played one, this sounds good to me. The question is, are there any barbarous areas near Hommlet? I want to give my character a good background, but I need a place to start. I would prefer that my character come from an area as close to where the campaign takes place as possible.

I know there are great on-line resources for information on Greyhawk, but I need a region to search for, and so here I am, hat in hand.

My copy of the Gazeteer is across town, otherwise I'd help you out.

Couldn't you just say that your character "has traveled from the frozen wastes at the calling of his deity" or something?

I suppose I could , but I generally prefer to work up more detailed backgrounds. I have faith that the Greyhawk board community will come through for me!

I don't have my copy of the LGG handy either (maybe sooner or later someone who does will post something!) but Hommlet isn't that far from the Lortmil Mountains. Maybe there's a tribe of barbarians living there?

The closet Barbarian/Nomad type of community is the Tiger & Wolf Nomads very mongol-like people's. Unless your DM has made a place for barbarians in the Lortmils or you could be playing a Half-orcish barbarian from an Orc tribe in the Gnarley Woods.

Thanks Argon. The Tiger and Wolf nomads sound interesting. Where are they located in relation to Hommlet?

I believe Hommlet is located in Furyondy if not Furyondy than Verbobonc. The Tiger nomads are slighlty closer as a part of their lands borders the northwestern part of Furyondy. The Wolf nomads would of had too cross Tiger nomad territory or cut though Perrenland to gain access to Furyondy. The Tiger nomads also are on the western border of the Empire of Iuz.
You should look up some information on this I would suggest www.canonfire.com I hopr this information is useful.

The wolf & Tiger nomads are FAR to the north, through Furyondy, sneak through the land of Iuz & turn left. A bit of a trek although given the adventure date its not a war zone yet.

How about a half-orc or human from the Pomarj? Just to the south-east through the Gnarley forest its pretty close compared to the Wolf & Tiger nomads and given the upheavals there with the Slavers & cult of the earth dragon its feasable that barbarous tribes are being pushed to the margins of habitable space and seeking fortune elsewhere.

As far as canon is concerned I'm not aware of any human based tribal clans that are in the Lortmils, Kron Hills, Gnarley Forest, or any other area close by.

That, however, does not mean you can't make one up

I suggest that if your DM isn't providing you with much background to go on, that you work with him to make up some story that legitimizes the characters background in the surrounding area.

There are surely remnants of dwarven and gnomish clans in the Lortmils since the Hateful Wars. There are certainly plenty of orcs so Argon's suggestion is a good one and quite plausible. There's nothing to stop you from saying that small human clans eke out a frontier existance in the mountains, alienating themselves from common civilization by choice maybe. A good idea might be to have them be Flan of origin and have them be a cult of sorts who are trying to reestablish their native roots to the area and the land and retain some of their dying culture perhaps.

There are always options with Greyhawk

I am always astounded by the wealth of Greyhawk information that is available on the internet. I have decided to play a Tiger Nomad. The Baklunish focus on personal honor makes it easy to fit into an adventuring party. Also, since the Tiger Nomads hold wizards in high esteem, it provides me with a plausible reason to be adventuring with this group. My character will have a debt of honor to the party wizard, and thus serves as his protector and champion (at least until the wizard does something to impeach his honor!).

Thank you all for your help and pointing me in a few equally interesting directions.

Glad to see you made a decision Skye. Their are Orc tribes in the Gnarley and their are humans which pass though and protect the Gnarley. So the Half-orc Barbarian would of been good as well.
But as Delgath suggested speak with your DM about how and why your character left his nomadic life behind to join the party. It seems you got a descent reason to follow the party for now. But if your DM also deems it ok you could be receiving visions which will lead you to the Temple.
I won't go any further because I won't spoil your DM's hard work. But ask your DM for some input.

The 83 Glossography has Men, Tribesmen (woodsmen) and Men Tribemen (hillmen) listed as possible encounters in the Welkwood Forest and Kron Hills encounter tables. One of those might fit your needs.
