I have never heard of Gamma World before, but after reading this board and others, I am intrigued. It sounds like the computer game Fallout on crack. Is this close? In other words, could someone give me a brief overview about what this game is all about?

It's closer to Fallout on LSD. Previous editions had everything from forests of giant flowers or thistles, little mushroom men, androids trying to take over the world, lots of deadly renegade robots, mutant gun-toting rabbits, strange ancient technology, and flying one-eyed fungus...

Players got to be humans, mutanted humans, mutant animals & plants, androids, robots, cyborgs, sasquatch, lizardmen, & racoon men.

If you get irradiated and live to tell about it, there is a good chance you'll mutate in new and interesting ways.

The new GW sounds like it'll be more of the same, plus the D20 system. For the record, with just the first two books (PHB and Mutants & Machines, 224 pages each) the new GW exceeds all previous editions' page counts and it'll be the first edition in hardback.

Gamma World is an old brand about as old as Dungeons & Dragons, way even before Fallout (don't know if the programmer were inspired by Gamma World). Only recently it is being updated for use with the d20 System.

Hm... this isn't anything like Omega world, is it? That was some pretty wild stuff; giant rabbits, giant radioactive moths, to say nothing of the giant ladybugs! I never played the original, but Polyhedron had turned it into a minigame a while back. The mutations were cool, tho.:D

Yep, Omega World was the first D20 version of Gamma World. A lot of the details were different, but the spirit remained the same.

I believe the mini-game was in the works around the same time GW was first licensed to Sword & Sorcery.

Yep. I played Gamma World when I was just a youngster. Computer games had just happened and you had to have access to the terminal at your local high school just to play things like "Star Trek" and "Starsky and Hutch", games that actually were...kind of bad, to tell the truth.
Gamma World, now that was a game. Where else could your DM have a simple thing like a telephone terrorize an entire party of 5th level characters. (If you role played it right, it worked as none of the party was familiar with technology except in a push this and that happens way.) Our party was fun to play with and we HATED telephones or as we called em, ringy thingies. Evey time we saw one and it rang, bad things happened, man. BAAD things.
Loved that game.
Hi Reg! Long time no see. Uh, no read? Thinking Hawaii thoughts lately as my parents are visiting my Bra(-ther) there. Today they spend the whole day over at Chinaman's Hat park. Sigh. Just...relaxing.
:D
