I don't know if you like it or not, but i can swear you it can be great if it's done correctly. Not too loud, and the good music at the good time.
I would like to have you opinion to make a list of eligible music by categhories, thats to say:
*For combat: like carmina burana (excalibur), some of conan (basil pouloudouris)
*For town and ambiance music
*For forest
*For stressing (the kind of music you would here ina a movie of tomb of horror)
*Other categories (romance, anything ;) )

It would be nice if you can remember the exact title of each songs so i can make a mp3 and play them by number during roleplay for ambience.
Thanks a lot !

We typically just toss in a few CD's and let them go. So they're just background music, more for ambiance than combat. Gets us in the mood and everyone knows when the music starts it's time to settle down to play. Celtic music, classical, anything with harp.
Also buy a Lorenna McKennit CD, she is excellent. Course I get in the mood for this type of music anyway so I have quite a bit of a selection.

I have up to this point stolen from the afore mentioned sound tracks, and the music off the Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 sound tracks. The combination has been terrific thus far.

However, in the latest Dragon magagzine there was an ad for "The official Soundtrack"

Check it out at http://www.midnightsyndicate.com/flashmain.htm

I personally will check this out. There are 2 demo tracks available to listen to.

Movie Sountracks, maybe some nature sounds, Icewind Dale (1&2), Diablo(1&2, especially for dark toned tracks).

Most of those Diablo tracks are available for download at Blizzard's website.

There was an issue of Dragon that had suggestions for the ultimate D&D soundtrack. If I can find my copy, I'll let you know the issue.

I'm going to say that I tend towards instrumentals more than vocals, but there are some good vocals that don't draw attention away from the game. Anyway, a list...

Pink Floyd - Atom heart Mother
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
Pink Floyd - Wish You were here
Pink Floyd - Animals

Medeski Martin and Wood - Combustication
Medeski Martin and Wood - Friday Afternoon in the Universe

Charlie Haden - Take your pick. Nocturne's quite lush.
Miles Davis - Circle in the Round
Miles Davis - In a Silent Way

Marilyn Crispell - Amaralyis
Bill Evans - Live at the Village Vanguard (61)

Any R&B collection - Atlantic/Rhino

Early 80's Cure
Cocteau Twins
Grateful Dead - Blues for Allah

Beatles - Abbey Road

Peter Gabriel - Last Temptation of Christ
Dead Can Dance - I forget their titles but they're worth a look.
Bob Marley - Surprisingly effective. Any album. Maybe Exodus
UB40 - Signing Off
Sam and Dave - Best of

And if you like classical...

Beethoven - Quartets (any), Violin Sonatas,
Mozart - Divertimenti, Serenades, Quartets, Quintets
Bach - Anything, really.
Brahms - Anything (Dark, complex)
Schubert - Quartets, Anything with Piano
DeBussey(sp?) Anything. Very dream-like stuff

As Darastrix said, "We typically just toss in a few CD's and let them go. So they're just background music, more for ambiance than combat," that is the route my group follows. We use the 5 CD spinner with the usuals:

Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring Soundtrack

Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers Soundtrack

Gladiator Soundtrack
(The Russell Crowe movie, not the Cuba Gooding one. ;) )

The Mummy Soundtrack

The Mummy Returns Soundtrack

As the DM, I also use Yes and Genesis when I write and work on the campaign outside the gaming sessions. Pink Floyd, classical, Rush, Kitaro and similar artists work, too. Actually some of the Christian stuff I listen to works, also (77's, The Prayer Chain, and Poor Old Lu especially).

I don't know the ref, but i know "nature et decouverte " (nature and discovery) sell ambiance music with nature theme, like forest, wind, etc... does anyone know of?
Conan the barabarian has very good combat music, really. I will try to make a mp3 compile of what you wrote, with number associated to ambiance (1 to 10 combat, 11 to 30 forest, etcc..)
Any news suggestions wellcome.
Thank you all.

gladiator, star wars, conan soundtracks or carmina burana. Sometimes 80's rock will do.

I use "Bud's big dive" (I think that's what the track was called) from The Abyss for when the party are just stooging about in a dungeon and "Burn it all" from Backdraft for the combat scenes.
