I was just thinking about afflicted kender today and I realized that it has been nearly 40 years since Kendermore was burned to the ground. So in Hylo unless a kender has migrated from the Desolation, the youngest afflicted kender would be in their early 40's. So the question must now be asked in Hylo do the crotchety, rude, fearful afflicted kender have children that are similarly afflicted?

Personally I would say no, but I have seen arguments both ways. Kender from the Desolation, who have lived their whole life there, would still be and their descendants may be for a long time. But those afflicted families living in a mixed town of True kender and afflicted kender in Hylo... can the True kender save the children, even if they can't reach the parents?

I think the children can be saved, but it depends on which parent raise and takes care of them.Children are open minded and except alot more things then adults,so don't even try to sway my line of thought.:D

I want to say that I read somewhere that some of the descendents of afflicted kender were afflicted as well.

Read the story on the afflicted kender in Bertrem's Guide to the War of Souls Volume II. IIRC, that had a few theories on the subject.

Heh, I did read that and basically it summed up every afflicted kender debate ever seen online and all it does is say.. "it could be this or it could be this or it could be this..."

There is nothing definate, just four or five strong theories and it ends with "we'll have to wait and see". heh Well I think it's time to see.

Unless The Desolation altered kender genetics, I would say a definite no. I could see perhaps them being raised to be afflicted kender, but, I think that a child of an afflicted kender who was raised by normal kender would be just that, a normal kender.

Well, that's the thing. There has never been an "official" ruling as to if it was Malys' transformative magic, (the same stuff that change the land AND the animals of Goodlund into the Desolation) that caused the affliction, or if it was just the terrible tragedy of it all. There were afflicted kender following the Cataclysm, but within 3 generations or so they outgrew it.

So it comes down to this. If Malys touched them somehow with her magic then it's possible they will always remain this way.

But if it was the tragedy of the experience, then I would say the children have a 50% chance of also being the same way and the next generation 25% until it clears up.

Now the kender living in the harsh environment of the Desolation will be afflicted for a long long time regardless of if it was magic or not.

Of course this is all just IMHO. heh

See, i always felt affliction was psychological. A child of an afflicted parent in Hylo would probably inherit some paranoia, but on the whole, the forgiving happy society would make them much more like true kender. Of course, running into KoN or dragons would wake up that childhood paranoia...

Kender are the way they are partially cos of how their parents are. Their parents are never afraid. their families are never afraid. they trust everyone and everyone trusts them. So I'd say that, for example, if an afflicted kender has a child and that child is adopted by normal kender, the child will b more normal. if it's raised by aflicted kenders, it will b more prone to b aflicted.

Well, if we look to "Spirit of the Wind" (one of the greatest kender novels of all time, heh) then the kender were actually having nightmares and were afraid weeks before the attack even happened. As the land was changing and the woods were dying around them, they were also being affected... but we can't be sure if this was a result of the loss of their homeland or if the magic Mayls was using (I think it was the second).

well, i'm currently roleplaying an afflicted kender in the DLU forums, and his story is that he took his baby brother and escaped from their village when malys came, but his parents and family all died. So he's severely afflicted. His little bro, though, was raised in palanthas, and has no recollection of the desolation or the affliction, and is pretty much a standard true kender.
