I was just looking at the posted racial stats for the Baaz draconian on the Wizard's site and was struck divine confusion by the last entry stating the Baaz have +1 level adjustment but then immediately stated that the Baaz have an ECL of 3+ the character class levels. Wouldn't that mean that they were +3 level adjustment or a ECL +1. If I'm totally wrong here can someone explain the difference I thought they were the same thing.

Nope. not a mistake.

A baaz draconians has 2 HD.
And a +1 Level Adjustment.
So that's a total of 3.
So 0th level baaz has an ECL of 3.

If the baaz were a 5th level monk/2nd level Knight of the Crown

You would have a Baaz with 2 HD, +1 level Adjustement, and 7 total character levels (5 as a PHB PC, 2 as a PrC).

His ECL would be 10 ECL = 3 "monster"+ 7 Character levels.

A lot of people get confused by what ECL actually means. In this case ECL is the overall effective character level composed of monster manual hitdice, the level adjustment, and any character levels. I've seen most people use the term ECL of 3 to mean the number you add to your character levels.
