I like the Living Greyhawk Gazeteer. There, I've said it.

For all the griping and whining I do about Greyhawk, I have to admit that I like the Living Greyhawk Gazeteer. Sure, it reads like a college textbook, but maybe that's part of the attraction. All the canonical history is updated and laid out in a concise well-written manner, just like the textbooks I read as an undergraduate. I never go to it for anything statistical because it's a different type of book for Greyhawk, one that I'm learning to appreciate three years after its initial publication.

I still want great things for Greyhawk like magic, monsters, treasure, better maps, and so on, but I do like the Gazeteer. Anyway, that's it.

I like it as well. :D It has a lot of useful information, and it does describe the world quite well.

Hi all-
Mentioning that the LGG is a read similar to a college textbook is a complement. Gary Holian and Erik Mona are both excellent writers and the main contributors. As we know, EM was the original editor of the Oerth Journal and has now moved up to being the editor of Dungeon. Gary Holian is the founder of GREYtalk and CanonFire!. Both know Greyhawk, and are able to take original ideas and concepts presented in old Dragon magazines, as well as their own, and present them in a well written format.

Having the LGG written at a decent college level is what Greyhawk is about. Greyhawk isn't the wimpy writing of the PHB (and worse editing). Its sourcebooks have always been well written, its only been the novels that have been campy and irritating.

I for one enjoy reading a well written textbook, and that is what the LGG is. It is a textbook describing the lands of Oerth. Thankfully Marc has kept up (and re-instilled) the excellent writing requirements brought forth for Greyhawk in the Oerth Journal. Gary, Creighton, Stuart, and the others that have had articles published in the LGJ have continued and expanded Greyhawk in terms of excellent writing and development.
Lets hope they and the rest of us keep up the good work in furthering Greyhawk.

I appreciate it also. I was ignorant to the setting prior to the LGG (having only been exposed to it through very meager means) but the book has done a great job educating me and converting from being a Forgotten Realms junkie. I just wish there was a little more source material available out there... It has also reintroduced me to a great book that when I had bought, I through it aside and forgot about it: Greyhawk: The Adventure Begins. This old AD&D 2ed book has a great map of Greyhawk City and the surrounding lands!

Well, as one of the co-authors of that book, I appreciate all the positive comments. We certainly tried to pack it with as much material as we could (we would have gladly written a 300 page book if they let us and included more classes, magic, and lore.) It was a battle just to get 192 pages. So much was left out or undone. Its just unfortunate that Wizards is no longer in the business of producing Greyhawk accessories and sourcebooks.
