all right, in a possible campaign of mine, the PC's will wind up fighting (and killing) Azathoth from CoC, and Nyarlothotep will be pulled into Ravenloft as the darklord of a shiny new island domain. what would this look like? how could they escape from RL? by this point they should be into the epic levels.

epic is generally a poor choice to combine with gothic horror for reasons that are continually discussed elsewhere.

I'd keep it an island and not part of the core. Rather than gothic Horror I'd go for the overtop WWI style sense of alienation and powerlessness in face of things greater than man. I'd keep the limits of the plane in place superceeding epic abilities. PCs should be given the task of defending a large group of people not able to survive on their own. Nameless monsters keep assualting the PCs and their wards. If the wards come from disparate places and are prone to bicker or fall out among themselves all the better. The key to getting out is one of their wards. Rather than kill the big N the PCs have to get everyone home.

no, you misunderstand. the PC's are from Sigil, and this is the culmination of their cross-planar Great Old One hunt. They fight Azathoth, and then Nyarlothotep get pulled into Ravenloft, along with the PC's. The PC's then have the formidable task of escaping.

Azathoth is the Core of the Universe. Killing it (Azathoth is not a he) would probably collapse the reality they kill it in. This would probably kill quite a lot of innocent people. This would be a mass-murder on a scale that no world has ever known before. At least one of the PCs would a wonderful candidate for Domain Lord.

As for epic levels being unsuited to Ravenloft, maybe not in this case. The Domain Lord PC would become an actual God in his Domain. However, all his divine powers seem to do more harm than good. Nyarlathotep serves the PC, but intentionally perverts his orders whenever possible. The Pc could even be allowed to play the character (for a while) if you feel up to it

This would lead to something I don;t think has ever been explored before. The isolation and helplessness of Gothic Horror with a Deity as the victim. It would be so

FWIW, I suspect H.P. Lovecraft would *hate* the Ravenloft setting. Too "sentimental", and the villains are too darn human for his tastes.
