I've noticed the Exotic Weapon Master PrC from Masters of the Wild supplement; maybe it's a good font of inspiration for the Athasian Gladiator

from what i've seen of the gladiator i believe that the extra feats that can be spent on exotic weapons as a little lacking. if a gladiator spent his livley hood training in weapons, i belive that they should start with exotic weapon feats with all common arena weapons. make sense that is a pelota is a common ranged weapon not only in the arena but also in the streets that it should be a weapon all gladiators are able to use. Matches are setup with little concern for the gladiator but the amusement of the sk and crowd, so a crowd pleasing weapon would be possed by all gladiators.
what do you all think?

Granted history and fantasy rarely mix as well as oil and water do, but historically, a gladiator was not trained in versatility. Something to ponder when tinkering the gladiator. Its the viiew I think of a little more than the 'all purpose fighter' which the fighter class already covers. I picture gladiators (and their corresponding abilities) to be the ultimate specialists; but like anyone who learns to fight finds out, specializing has more drawbacks than one would think. The gladiator should be better at a certain feat chain than a regular fighter, but have its own drawbacks when using weapons or learning styles outside of his speciality. I hate crunches or I'd draw up a gladiator that fits this view so I guess my point is moot. Sorry, mad ramblings. I'll go away now . . .

Good point, a recent dragon was devoted to gladiators and there is a wealth of historical knowledge for us that have little time for any real research. gladiator came from shcools that specailzed in a limited number of styles, most of which only one style.
But for the setting and the history of the campaing gladiators where the weapon generalist. They were the ones how would go out for one match using singing sticks the next wrist razors and so on, for them to spend precious feats on a iconic part of the class would be a crime.

Also one thought, how about boiling the gladiator down to a variant class instaed of a completely differnt class from fighter? the last couple dragons mags have had a bunch of examples for fighters.

I rather like alot of the variant class ideas presented in the past few Dragon mags. Don't really want to go about making any of them up myself, but that's just me. If someone else wants too, cool. Personally, I don't care either way as to whether the gladiator stays as is, becomes a variant class, or a prestige class, or gets dropped entirely and the class features turned into feats. As long as there's someone willing to die for the shot at fame in an arena, there will be gladiators. That suits me just fine.

I'm more in favor of the gladiator concept over all than the gladiator class/prc/etc. While I have no problems with the current gladiator, I think that any class should be able to be a gladiator, i.e. an arena based combatant who uses what ever skills he has to survive. Psions, psychic warriors, rogues, etc should all be able to have a shot at being a gladiator. Gladiator class against gladiator class would get really boring really quick to the masses, especially in some cities where the arena is open more often (every week or so). Imagine an obstical course where the opponents had to navigate around death traps of various sorts, never knowing exactly where the opponent is until he strikes from surprise from behind an obstical. In such a scenario, a regular gladiator wouldn't stand a chance against a well played rogue. Or matched pairs where a psychic warrior and a gladiator pair off against a similar team. The gladiator's go head to head while the psychic warriors augment their team mate or destabalize their team mate's opponent. Just some things that can spice up your otherwise same old same old arena fights.

The Gladiator PrC in Sword&Fist has really low requirements: any two feat from the fighter bonus feat list, 4 rank in Perform or Intimidate, +4 BAB. Any class can get it relatively easy if the character sets its mind to it. With such easy requirements the Gladiator as PrC is fine IMHO.

Back in 2nd Ed gladiators had:

Proficency in ALL weapons
Ability to specilize in lots of weapons

Checking out the current one I downloaded.... I see him proficient w/ martial weapons and not allowed to specialize. I like the special attacks and feats, but maybe they should have some "gladiator" exotic weapons they know how to use at 1st level ALA monk weapons.

I guess specilization is generally a fighter only thing, so that pushes them more into a PrC if you want it, but would it break balance to give it to them?

Because psychic warrior should be approximately equal with a multiclass fighter/psion. Or else nobody would play psychic warrior.
