Because there just aren’t enough ( ), I have an idea for DS wizards. I was thinking something along the lines of Arcana Unearthed: Wizards memorize their ‘spells known’ for the day, then cast those spells like sorcerers. Here’s the twist though - wizards have two sets of spells per day: a generic wizards suite which uses any sort of energy the character knows (default: preserving or defiling), and an extra set that can only be used for defiling. In addition when a wizard casts from the second set they take some amount of nonlethal damage (graduated by spell level). So defiler get more spells per day, but they start taking damage when they overcast. Preservers have the option to cast extra spells, but take damage and risk becoming defilers. Taking a prestige class, like necromant, lets you use the apropriate alternate energy source for the standard spells, but they still have to defile to cast the extra spells (or perhaps they defile the Gray and take negative energy instead). Taking levels in the Dragon epic prestige class allows a character to use his regular or defiler spell slots for ‘dragon magic’.

What do y’all think?

I was actually thinking along similar lines, and there are varying complexities that you can introduce depending on how in depth you really want to make arcane magic feel, and how much your players, or even you with your NPCs, want to put up with. Below is a general outline, and additional ideas that can be added, for a more in depth arcane magic system. Additionally, I refer to arcane spellcasters on Athas as sorcerers, as the First was known.

Spellcasting: A Step by Step Guide

Prepared Spells
Each day, a sorcerer must study from their collection of spells, be it a book or some other method of record, in order to maintain or rework their current memorized list, or Prepared Spells. It is from this list of memorized spells that a sorcerer can draw from in order to shape the life energy that they channel. A sorcerer can prepare a list of spells equal to:
Class Level + Intelligence Modifier
Note that this number represents actual spells that the sorcerer can memorize, not spell levels worth. When casting spells, a sorcerer does not lose these prepared spells, and nothing short of brain trauma, represented by Intelligence damage or drain, can cause such a loss. In such a case, Each drop in Intelligence Modifier causes a loss of one prepared spell, though if the damage is repaired, the forgotten spells do not return until after the sorcerer again studies. If a sorcerer does not study for a least one hour a day, prepared spells are forgotten at a rate of one per day without study. Reworking a prepared spell list takes no longer than the hour needed to study.
