Below is a general outline, and additional ideas that can be added, for a more in depth arcane magic system. Additionally, I refer to arcane spellcasters on Athas as sorcerers, as the First was known. Spellcasting: A Step by Step Guide Prepared Spells Each day, a sorcerer must study from their collection of spells, be it a book or some other method of record, in order to maintain or rework their current memorized list, or Prepared Spells. It is from this list of memorized spells that a sorcerer can draw from in order to shape the life energy that they channel. A sorcerer can prepare a list of spells equal to: Class Level + Intelligence Modifier Note that this number represents actual spells that the sorcerer can memorize, not spell levels worth. When casting spells, a sorcerer does not lose these prepared spells, and nothing short of brain trauma, represented by Intelligence damage or drain, can cause such a loss. In such a case, Each drop in Intelligence Modifier causes a loss of one prepared spell, though if the damage is repaired, the forgotten spells do not return until after the sorcerer again studies. If a sorcerer does not study for a least one hour a day, prepared spells are forgotten at a rate of one per day without study. Reworking a prepared spell list takes no longer than the hour needed to study. More to come later, must switch computers... |
