Here is one that I just remembered that bothered me so much from one player in my last campaign. How would you define the Nobility and Royalty of the Solamnic Knighthood?

The guy in my campaign absolutley could not except anything other than the fact that it had to be a Feudalistic Aristacrocy. I tried to explain it, but could not get a description that settled with him.

I've always veiwed the Solamnic Knighthood this way.

Solamnus rebels, takes his loyal followers and soldiers with him. They bring law, order and freedom to the frontier provinces of the empire.

They found a Knighthood, and the Knighthood controls the realm as an executive, judicial and military power.

The Rose Knights, I always felt, have control over the various estates that the knighthood controls, in a managerial fashion. Over the centuries, this became a hereditary position, much like membership in the order of the Rose itself. In fact, the various families who had the rights to the Order of the Rose, are in fact listed on the measure. So you have the Crownguards, the Brightblades, the Oaksheilds, etc. These were the "nobility" of the Knighthood.

In the Cataclysm, many of the old families died out, requiring new Rose Knights to be appointed as an honour to men of good standing.

Knights of the Crown are career soldiers, Knights of the Sword are monastic knights. The Rose Knights are the leaders and aristocrats. Hope this helps you.

This helps out a lot. I think I will offer him the same role in essence, but just not as a Solamnic. He was insistent on taking the "Kingship" of Solamnia and uniting the Legion of Steel, the Knights of Neraka, the Qulenesti, and the Silvanesti and turning the contenent into a big ol' happy family. I told him that he would probably end up like the Kingpriest with the way he actually said it.

As far as I see it, Solamnia was a kind of feudalistic monarchy prior to the cataclysm. Their even seems to haven been a king of sorts (even if I don't know if Vinas took the job...)
Don't forget the old nobles in those regions. Once joining the knighthood controlling (and securing) given lands and provinces, they give a stack of nobility to feed from. Over the centuries the ORder of the Rose developped into the Order of ruling families, mighty city lords etc. therefore exacting noble blood (by inheritance or by elevation into nobility by deeds) for those wishing to enter the Rose.

After the Cataclysm the more centralized rule backed up by the Knighthood was shattered as well. The different provinces, cities etc. took on their own with peasants thrwoing off the "yoke" of their feudal masters blaming them responsible for all the misery and cataclysmic stuff.

So you have a kind of split knighthood: Those with estates and family property, lesser or greater landlords on one hand, the more military structured new recruits from lesser families and outside of Solamnia/Sancrist which indeed form the backbone of the military might, being stationed somewhere, fighting far from home for the most time.

This info is great. When I tried to explain it, the words wouldn't come out. I basically knew how to play out their system, but not how to explain it.
