One of the players in my group who I am trying to coax into taking up DMing (so that I can take a break and occasionally do what I love) is soon to be starting us up on a Dragonlance campaign.

One of the OTHER players in my group, who is also a Dragonlance enthusiast, told me about the Knights of the Black Rose, and how I'd ought to look them up because "they're just so rockin'!"

So I came to the Dragonlance boards here on Wizards.COMmunity in search of some useful information and immediately had to retreat from the thread and swear nine oaths not to visit it again because of all the enmity there about the realms.

Like Tal said....Of course there are limitations....Duh......It isnt the typical D&D world.....If I wanted that I would have stayed with the core setting(greyhawk) or gone for the first ridiculous tripe that came along (FR).

What??!! You like Forgotten Realms? You go to the Abyss and die! DIE!!!!

Naw, I am not a hater, I think the animosity comes from our setting being pushed aside for FR, I was seriously ****** when 3rd edition came out and they said that DL was not being supported...

That makes sense. If Dragonlance had hit the shelves first I'd have been upset.

Thanks for clearing that up!

Any idea what the Knights of the Black Rose are? I did a search and the only thing I could find was on Lord Soth, whom I recognize from Ravenloft which I'm a bit more familiar with.

Is he the only Knight of the Black Rose and is the player in my group demented, or is there an entire knightly order?

I do see plenty of DL-bashing out there, but moreso on the races boards. Too much gnome and especially kender bashing for my tastes.

I think that some people don't care for the Realms, as people see them as overly expansive. Also, many people feel that Dragonlance has better flavor (a subjective term) and a more epic storyline.

I've run both the Realms and Dragonlance. I like both settings, although my preference is Dragonlance.

Lord Soth is the only Knight of the Black Rose. You're probably thinking of the Knights of Neraka (aka Knights of Takhisis or Dark Knights).

Thank you. I really didn't know much about it... just that the Dragonlance enthusiast player told me they were sorcerer-knights or something of that sort.

Did I misinterpret what he was saying and is there a group with a similar name that is made up of sorcerer-knights?

NOTE: Personally, I love the realms. It's probably because I've been exposed to them for such a long time and have so much realmslore in my head that it feels like home.

I've not had much exporsure to the Dragonlance setting. I've read a few stories out of Love and War, and DMed a 2nd edition module that I enjoyed throughly but didn't know much about the setting.

It turns out that the module I played through is considered very Dragonlance lite and that it doesn't have the flavor involved in the setting supposedly.

I look forward to my future adventures in these lands, and hope to grow to love the setting as I have the realms.

The Knights of Neraka are made up of three orders.

Knights of the Lily - Warrior-knights.

Knights of the Thorn - Wizard/Sorcerer-knights.

Knights of the Skull - Cleric/Mystic-knights.

Your friend was probably referring to the Knights of the Thorn.

Ahh yes! I had simply forgotten. He had actually said the knights of the THORN.

Time to re-do my search.

Things like that... I don't understand why there is so much realms-bashing going on here. People on the Forgotten Realms board don't seem to be doing too much Dragonlance bashing, or anything of that sort.

I guess what I'm asking for is the reason.

Why so much hatred toward the realms?

-------

Also, please let me know what you know about the Knights of the Black Rose!

I am now designing my Dragonlance character in my head and looking for things to try.

Ack...He quoted me....on a really bad day too! Well, if you undestand that I have been behind DL like you seem to be for FR. Yes, my opinion is that FR is way too expansive, and what really bugged me is that FR had it's day in the sun in 2E when it was the core D&D world....I really felt shafted by FR when it was getting to come out and at the time there was no publishing future for DL in sight. And not to mention the constant articles I pay for and dont want about FR in Dragon. I've played in the setting, and it was not to my tastes, however....It was a fun session. I do apologize if I came off harsh...Several posts down the thread I apologize for it there. Anyhow...The way you say you love FR....that how I care about DL.....And to the rest of the board I apologize....It never really struck me that someone would view 'lil old me as a voice that represented the whole of the DL boards.
