The skin tones of Athas

I am just starting a new game and one of my players asked me what a Gulgan would look like.

This got me to checking various resources (Wanderer's Journal, Ivory Triangle, CSoT, have not looked at CDoD yet). It does not give any physical characteristics of the humans that live in that area.

Obviously, barring the villichi, there is no Nordic complexions (gets ready to duck the Oracle's Lightning bolts), so I am wondering what would the average citizen of each city state look like?

Any responses would be greatly welcomed

Draji are copper-skinned.

Another interesting aspect is the skin tone variation of various races.

- Urik: ancient Babylonia / Sumeria
- Raam: ancient Egypt
- Nibenay: ancient China / Angkor
- Balic: ancient Greece
- Draj: ancient Inca / Aztec / Mayan
- Gulg: ancient Congo
- Halfling: ancient Polyponesian [sic]

Going off of these then from a previous post,

Would Gulgans be a darker color? Urikite men are described as having oiled beards. I am thinking possible tanned Persian appearance.

Any other takers? Tyr and Balic mebbe a Mediterranean appearance?

It should also be noted that Gulg got a much higher frequency of albinos than any other citystate.

I think in the wanderer's journal it said that Athasian humans all had copper skin. They have been trading and breeding for thousands of years and they all probably look the same. Maybe the Last Sea and the two lost cities might have some different looking people.

The people of Gulg are actually not described as being very dark of skin.

The appearance of a cities natives doesn't always match that of the cultural idea that the city-state borrows from.

[Edit]

Also, the first box set Wanderer's Journal does list a wide variety of skin tones for humans from 'coppery, golden brown, hues of grey, or patchy' due to mutations of rampant defiler magic. Just something to add a little variety to your standard humans.

The Veiled Alliance accessory detailed the cities quite well. I'm pretty sure I recall the Gulgians are referred to as dark-skinned, although they do, as previously mentioned, have a high proportion of albinos ("moon people").

The skin tones of Athas in general are very varied. "No two families have the same skin colour".

However, I can't be bothered digging my books out...

hi!
My gulgians are dark skinned.
the balician are fair (as it can be in athas of course) skinned.
Drajian are bronze skinned.
The other cities are of multidiversity culture - so they have many different colors.

I do remember reading somewhere that there was a wide variety, and not just among humans. Hamanu's elven general in the Chronicles (can't remember his name or which book) was described as have black skin, and I doubt they mean "as in African" I pictured actual black, not brown.

If all humans were the same color (and I don't think they are) it would be because every "human" who came out of the Pristine Tower when the new races were created was the same. It would NOT the result of there having been different colors that then merged through interbreeding. Most Athasians don't leave the cities they are born in. Why would your average Joe cross the DESERT to find chicks? The terrain and climate of Athas leads to regional skin tones more than anything else. As people would breed with the people near them and not risk death in the dunes just to get some lovin'.
