What are your experiences with N1? And your opinions.

I am going to run it as a prequel to T1-4, because I hear the Village of Hommlet doesn't give enough experience to tackle the Temple of Elemental Evil. N1 seems to have great role playing, it is intriguiging and would get the players ready for more than hack and slash from the beginning.

I find it be generally poor.
It has a number of encounters based on the party reacting in specific ways to people they meet, something almost always guaranteed to blow up in the face of someone running the game.
It has a final encounter that is absurdly overpowered for the level of the characters, and intructs the DM to essentially stack the encounter in favor of the players to resolve it. Why not simply use something more reasonable?
Lastly, while I have no objections to mature themes in a game, the one included in this was rather vile, and not something I consider appropriate for inclusion in a module like this.

I must have missed the mature theme...what and where was it?

I can't discuss it here, it would be against the rules.
It's in the temple of Merikka. Try reading that section again.

I agree with some of Sam's points, but have always retained a fondness for N1.

When I've run in it in the past, I've changed a lot of the town and dungeon encounters to be much more Lovecraftian in tone, monster choice, etc.---and the maturer themes that Sam mentions can work well wrt to that kind of rewrite, too....

I have had no problem running this module...as a matter of fact I have run multiple groups through it over the years and it can still be played as written. The scene at the temple is no more vile than anything else I would expect from the big-bad at the end. The NPC's that you meet have to be given a little more life than what is presented but that is true of most AD&D 1st edition modules.

I have linked this mod with a kicker revolving around the WGA Falcon series. It has worked extremely well in the past and now I might just convert to 3.5.
