I just bought the book the other day and can not wait to play a Dragon Rider. So my friend and I were reading the abilities and requirments and noticed some things; while a prerequisit of the class is they must have ridden a dragon, they dont gain it as a cohort until they take the class, how is this possable. Also, they gain the cohort at lvl 1, but to ride, say, a young adult copper dragon (The first age category large enough to carry a medium rider) they need to be lvl 19 accourding to what it says. I know I'm missing something here because as I see it theres no way to get the benefits of this class without going into epic rules.

Ok, the first half is something that the DM will have to take care of for the character. However, in my campaign, we redefined the rider level to be a bit more feasible to the characters. Instead of using the Creature Level given out of the DLCS (which basically bases the Creature Level off of hit points, which is how you are supposed to do it) we instead went off the Challenge Rating of the eqivalent dragon to determine what type. It is a bit nicer for the character overall.

I've got another question regarding the Dragon Rider PrC.

What would be the effective character level for the Sea and Shadow Dragons? I need to know on the Shadow Dragon for my next campaign.

Thanx.

With the Leadership feat, it would be possible to have a dragon as a cohort before taking levels in Dragon Rider. However, the size and level requirements are somewhat questionable.

Sea dragon is detailed in the Age of Mortals book, I don't know for sure where the Shadow Dragons are.

What I want are the stats for the choas dragons.

They are both in the AoM book, but I was thinking about what the ECL is for those dragons.

The Dragon Rider PrC in the DLCS lists the metallic and chromatic dragons by age and ECL for the benefit of the class, and I was curious what the Sea and Shadow Dragon's ECl's would be.

The level adjustments for the sea dragon are in the Age of Mortals book - they're immediately after the information for Advancement (but the heading isn't in bold, for some reason).

The shadow dragon's level adjustment information isn't in there, however. I would suggest using the same LA as the brass dragon: Wyrmling +2, Very Young +3, Young +4, Juvenile +4, Others --.

Remember, add the LA to the dragon's HD to get the ECL for the purposes of cohorts.

Cheers,
Cam

yeah, i myself had to wonder about this class. the minimal level for this class is 10, AND you can't even use the benefits of this class until you're almost epic.... seems like it should be a straight epic class as written.

You will also find that Marshal Medan had an adult blue dragon cohort -- and he is only 14th level!
