Am i right that when a Knight of the Crown wants to become a Knight of the Sword (with all his magical skill) he has to be at least a level1 cleric?
Wouldn't it make more sense to be a Fighter (what i think is the best class to become a Knight, espacially because of the needed Base Attack Bonus) and then simply become KotS? Then he could use his Cha to cast (which makes more sense to a Knight than with Wis) and simply use the cleric table for his spells.

What's your opinion?

If this were just the WotL era, I would agree with you. However, there is a reason for the +1 Caster Level.

Prior to the Chaos War, Sword Knights got their magic from the gods. Afterwards, they got it from Mysticism. Now that the War of Souls is over, it could be both.

Basically, it's a matter of where the magic comes from. If the Sword Knight got it from just one place, he could have his own advancement table, but since it can come from both, that's why you have the +1 caster level. It's similar to the Skull Knights in that regard.

Hope that makes sense.

I think it's been mentioned on the board before...

Knights of the Crown could certainly take the trials to become a Knight of the Sword without ever actually taking the prestige class. Same with the Knight of the Rose. There were certainly Knights of Sword and Rose during the Age of Despair when there was no divine magic.

OK, but i meant:
Could there be no Knight of the Rose/Sword with divine casting abilities without being a cleric?

They could be mystics or rangers, or even paladins (if those are allowed by the DM), but they need at least 1st-level divine spellcasting abilities. How they get them is up to the player. Keep in mind also that in the post-War of Souls era, almost all Knights of the Sword and the Rose gain their power from the gods, not from mysticism (as they did during the pre-WoS 5th age).

Cheers,
