You know, I had an odd thought the other day. Would a knight (Solamnic or Nerakan) ever multi-class with the cavalier? I could see a Crown or Lily Knight taking a few levels in order to boost up their mounted combat abilities.

What do you guys think? I know it would be odd, but would you ever do it?

Note: I don't have my books in front of me, so I can't compare the prerequisites at this time.

Funny, I actually saw the Knights of the Crown being more the foot troops and the Rose being the Cavalier types while the Knights of the Sword fulsilling both the cleric roles and the roles of righteous crusader.

But hey thats just me

Considering "knight" is synonymous with "cavalier" I don't think this is odd by any means. The Solamnics use actual foot soldiers as foot soldiers, not Crown Knights. The knights ride horses, if you recall from Dragons of Winter Night when Sir Derek Crownguard leads his unit out onto the field at the battle on the plains near the High Clerist Tower. This is also why all of the Solamnic PrCs have Ride as a class skill and why they all require ranks in the Ride skill to qualify for the class. The Knight of the Rose even requires Mounted Combat as a feat.

They're knights - elite cavalry trained to fight from the backs of horses (or dragons, when they're available) with lances. So, of course they could take levels in the cavalier prestige class.

Cheers,
Cam

I agree with Cam.

Also, as suggested in the old Dragonlance Adventures book, cavaliers are a good option for any knightly characters pledged to a noble or nation but not part of one of the major established orders. Of course, there they were refereing to the old 1e cavalier class from Unearthed Arcana but the same could hold true for the PrC now.

Not sure on this really, you have to seperate game mechanics with what the character would do.

Taking levels of Cavalier to 'beef up' ones other abilities I don't see happening, because my mind doesn't work like that.

If a Knight is seen as someone who leans heavily towards the Cavalier side of things, then sure, because you don't say ' I'm not a Knight, I'm a Cavalier', you instead take a level of Cavalier and are still a Knight.

Am I making sense?

Ok.. so what I mean is.. yes, great idea, no problem, but I try not to think of it as he's taking on a new class, more like he's specializing because he loves that side of things, but is still only a Solamnic Knight, even if on paper it says different.

I'll shut up now, my brain hurts.

Well, consider a character that aspires to a Knight of the Crown. He doesn't *want* to advance to Knight of the Sword. Perhaps he isn't wise enough....he's just a Knight, strong and true. He starts as a squire, gains 3 levels of fighter, then goes 10 straight as a Knight of the Crown.

At that point, he's maxed out as a Crown Knight....but has 7 levels left. He can go back to fighter, or gain Cavalier, to build upon his mounted, knightly abilities...

The Nerekans are calvary riders and dragon riders as well. I think it is high time novel and game authors stop confusing people, and starting using terms like "Nerekan Soldiers" or "Solamnic Auxillary Soldiers" when describing foot soldiers from levels 1-5.
