He once cast spells as a 17th-level sorcerer, but his Charisma score is 16. So he wasn't powerful enough to cast the 7th and 8th-level spells due to a sorcerer of his level?
I always imagined Palin to be the most powerful non-draconic sorcerer on Krynn! Was I wrong?

His ability score for sorcery in 5th age(SAGA system) was high, but somewhere along the lines it got translated into this... Who knows... maybe he had a permanent ability score drain or something..

After he was captured by Beryl's forces and had his hands smashed, I noticed he got a bit more p*ssy and/or irritable (behaving a little bit more like Raistlin of old from time to time, IMO at least). This might have been an in-story charisma reduction due to the emotional ties to his torture, injury, and continual loss of magical ability.

Again, IMO.

Check out p. 59 of Age of Mortals. Due to the magic drain at the time, Palin's effective caster level would have been reduced to 12 (assuming he was level 17 effective sorcerer even then) during the years 30 to 36 SC, thus meaning he'd effectively be a 12th level sorcerer and could only cast up to 6th level spells anyway. ;)
This is also the same time period in which the Dragons of a New Age trilogy takes place, in which Palin actively participated.

Palin original stats:

Str 13, Dex 17, Con 15, Int 17, Wis 16, Cha 13

I have not seen Palin's Stats from AoM, but i remember the SAGA version. Palin had a high intelligence score and a low presence (9 and 5, correct if i'm wrong). In game terms this means that he would become a great wizard and/or a great SAGA sorcerer (which also use intelligence for spellcasting), but 3rd edition said that the sorcerer uses his/hers charima to casts spells, and this make him a poor one.

If u recall the Chaos War, Palin wasn´t too confident on his own magical abilities (his original charisma score (13) reflects this). By the time of war souls Palin is old enough to have the 1st age adjusment, this boosts his int, wis and cha with +2 each (charisma improved to 15). Also during Chaos War Palin was a 4th, maybe 6th level wizard, when he reached 17th level he had 3 ability points (the designers actually). As i see, 1 point was for charisma... the 2 others i can´t tell.
