Okay, I was reading somehitng, maybe DL 3, I dunno, and it mentioned that GIlean was originally a mortal from another world which the High God made into a god as a reward for something. Well, I wa dwelling on this, and I htought "Waitaminute...who is the one person powerful enough to travel to another world and impress the High God so much that he rewards him with godhood?"

Then, I figured it out. It was so simple. And it's been in front of our noses all along.

Gilean is...

Elminster!

Acutally, I know next to nothing about Elminster. Mostly from what I learned from reading the back of Elminster in Hell once in a Barns and Noble.

Actually, Gilean couldn't be Elminster, since El is chaotic good, and Gilean is neutral. Besides, as far as I know, Gilean wears grey robes, not red.

Speaking about crossovers, my next campaign will be as follows: The Adventure Path (or whatever they're called) modules by WotC. One of the characters is going to be a from Krynn, one from Faerûn, and one from Rokugan. Heck, if I get a 4th player, then there's gonna be a character from Grayhawk or Manifest, too.

I don't care if this is a joke or not, I'm sick of this kind of attitude.
Besides, being the filthy little Realms fan that I am, I might well be offended by what you said.

As I recall, Gilean was a mortal from the future that the Highgod choose to be the balancing god of neutrality.

Gilean IS Paladine and Takhisis's Brother, he is the middle sib, and the God of Neutrility. He records the events of the world...

Okay, I have a few replies...

Elminster changes alignments. It's not so hard.

And, Gilean is *NOT* Takhisis and Paladine's brother. I don't know if even Paladine and Taky are brother and sister. THat's just something they did in Summer Flame for some odd reason.

And, I was told by my brother, who's actually read some FR books and ought to know more than me, that actually ELminster *DID* were gray and didn't really act so much like a good guy. BUt, he has a bad habit of just making things up when he doesn't know something. I think the only FR books he's read are the Icewind Dale and Dark Elf trilogies, anyway, and I don't thin kthey have too much about Elminster in there.

I know really that Gilean and Elminster are *NOT* one and the same. BUt, wouldn't it be znay if they were?!

...no.

Look, do you want me to dig out DL5(I mistakenly referred to it as DL3, sorry)? I htink that says it. If not, then wait a few days for me to check Vanished Moon out of the library, I know it says it in the Appendix.

...Alrighty, it's not in there, but it *IS* in the Appendix, I know it!

No it isn't.

"Out of Chaos, out of time, the High God summons forth a third deity: Gilean the greatest of all Sages."

The Appendix of Vansihed Moon says that the Gods were called forth out of Chaos by the High God. It says that all of creation was created by the High God. The Appendix and other current DL fiction, refer to Krynn as being alone in the universe. Krynn was what was created by the High God. Despite the older notions of Crystal Spheres, Spelljamming, and all of that, Krynn is alone in the heavens. It was created by the High God so was the rest of the universe. Do other universes exist? Probably. Did the Gods of Krynn come from these other Universes? Not according to any fiction I am aware of. The High God called into Chaos and out came the three gods. Paladine believes that they were fashioned out of the High God's consciousness. That calling into the Void which is the High God, the High God drew forth beings of his own design.

I hope all of that made sense.

I'm sure I read somewhere that Takhisis and Paladine were a couple at first, and Gilean was an ascended mortal. I'm quite sure that was an older version of how things were. It might have changed later, of course.

IIRC it was either in the 1st ed DLA or the 2nd ed Tales of the Lance.

Which ever, it reads that the Highgod couldn't trust either Paladine nor Takhisis with the Tobril, so he searched the future and found a single mortal man who was trustworthy enough to guard that book. He was allowed to read it, and in doing so was elevated to godhood.

Personally I prefer the idea that he was brought forth from Chaos with Paladine and Takhisis at the dawn of time.

Wow, temporal ramifications. So if the stories are true and Gilean was an ascended mortal, that means when the original 3 races were formed on Krynn, Gilean basically created himself (or at least his ancestors- humans)
A man created himself from nothing at the dawn of recorded history. Wait! Chaos!

ohhhh, my head....

My current theory, which is completely unofficial, is that the High God reached through time and took Astinus from the world immediately before the theft of Krynn. He/she brought him back through time, elevated him to the level of a God, and with that Astinus became Gilean and was given the Tobril.

Who or what Astinus was before that is of course open to conjecture. It's possible that the High God in his/her ineffable command of Law constructed a path through the River of Time by which Gilean would bestow his future self the apparent immortality and keen awareness of the flow of the events of the world he needed to achieve his final state. Yes, this is a paradox, but it's entirely within the High God's power to create it (and it's been done before - Raistlin/Fistandantilus, etc etc).

Why have Astinus live so long before being taken to become Gilean? It probably took thousands of years for him to immerse himself deeply enough in the River of Time that it would allow his divine elevation to take root in an existing framework. Ascending to godhood clearly requires an incredible dedication to one's mortal focus, and while Raistlin's chances were increased through his total commitment to the magic, Astinus' were increased through his total commitment to recording history.

Cheers,
Cam

Ack. It seems that the Summon Cam Banks spell went off prior to the Delayed Blast Dragonhelm. ;)

I've heard both that Gilean was summoned from beyond, and that he was an ascended mortal. The two do not have to be mutually exclusive. I probably lean towards the summoned from beyond category myself.

I've also heard the theory that Astinus and Sebastius are demigod children of Gilean. I have my doubts on this one, as it contradicts materials established for years. However, I have not read the story in question.

Gilean is an enigma, and should remain thus. To explain his origins would spoil his mystery.

Mine was quickened

I view it as such, trying to unravel the mysteries of Gilean is like trying to figure out the true composition of a hot dog. They both are impossible, and the mystery involved is the best part. I agree that there are too many theories out there, but choosing one all but ruins Gilean. I find it kind of weird that despite this, Gilean isn't the god of mystery...weird...
