The illustration of page 193 of the 1st edition DMG is of someone called Emirikol the Chaotic. For those that dont have the book, it shows a human riding through a city street, using some kind of ray spell to take out some poor soldier.

I love that picture.

Who is/was Emirikol the Chaotic? Is he still around or long gone? He looks like the perfect candidate for the sorcerer class in third edition. A kind of chaotic usurper kind of guy.

Anyone have any further information on who he is? I'm assuming that he is in some way connected to Gygax's early campaigns.

I know not the answer to your questions... but he features prominently in the late 2e adventure "A Paladin in Hell" Monte Cook (who wrote the adventure) took the name for it from a picture in the 1e players handbook, and got Emirikol from the picture in the 1e DMG that you mentioned. I believe in that adventure Emirikol is an 18th level wild mage (although I could be wrong, as I do not have it handy at the moment).

A paladin in hell is a great adventure and the information it gives you makes it worth the buy alone!

IIRC, Emirikol was moved into the Mystara setting at some point in TSR's publishing history, which always surprised me since he appeared in the DMG and not a Basic/Expert product....

well I know that A Paladin in Hell was not setting specific at all, and Monte made up the deity (Nehoed) who's temple was involved in the adventure specifically for the adventure (ie was not a known deity from any published campaign setting).

and after checking the adventure my mistake, he was a wild mage 24 in the module.

I think Gary Gygax has said (on one of the enworld threads?) that Emirikol wasn't a character Dave Trampier played in the Greyhawk Campaign.

There is also a supplement (can't remember which one - grrrr!) that features Emirikol and features the "ray-of-light-from-finger" as a spell called Emirikol's Question (or something like that). Can't for the life of me remember wher I read this, but there were a couple of other nuggets on the guy too. Also seem to recall seeing an updated version of the picture from the 1e DMG somewhere else since....
