Restriction of Armor for WoHS.

The write up for the War Mage mentions Armor Restrictions for the Wizards of High Sorcery. The write-up in the DLCS does not mention any such restriction on armor. What exactly does this contradiction mean?

Now, I'm having a debate with one of my Players who says that because of that mention (and Novel information) WoHS are prohibited from wearing armor. I have already said that this is not the case, and, along with weapons, the Wizard may wear armor without penalty. I was just wondering about some kind of official opinion.

Well, the WoHS should follow the same rules as wizards on weapons and armor. However, tradition says that WoHS only use dagger and staff, and no armor. You can follow the same rules as a wizard, but you may be frowned upon.

I've read and re-read that part. To me, it's just saying that dagger and staff are tradition. You might be seen as a trouble-maker or someone who's flouting the history of the order....but there's nothing mechanically preventing a WoHS from doing it.

Correct, the wizard in my sig wears leather armor, and has used a dragonlance before. He has been viewed as a trouble-maker, but he just responds that in order for the Wizards to gain back their glory, they need to be able to throw away some of the worthless traditions. His philosophy is that an armored wizard is better than a dead one.

Good philosphy

If we're going by novels in any case, the trilogy with Guerrand Di Thon had wizards wielding scimitars....

LOL! Good Philosophy! One must wonder how many blows that wizard (while wearing robes) took in battle before adopting this philosophy.

IMC, I allow wizards to use armor with out restriction due to a house rule that states that all checks for Spell Failure are automatically successful (they still need to acquire the requisite Armor Feats to use the armor correctly). So theoretically a 1st level wizard could go around in plate mail if he has right feats!

However, things don’t work out this way in play. Not all wizards have the training, time, resources or desire to learn how to use armor (or weapons). Instead, most wizards in my campaign depend on the old standbys for protection: Magic, Magic, and more Magic (and maybe some hired bodyguards).

One of the PCs, a female half-elf 1st level wizard actually has as her bodyguard one of the other PCs (a male minotaur 1st level fighter)!

In the campaign world at large, this his how most wizards use armor:

None/Robes: The default armor, use by all traditionalist and all mid to high level WOHS.

Leather (or lighter): Traveling wizards, WOHS who must enter dangerous or hostile places while on a mission for the Order.

Chainmail (or lighter): Used mostly by multi-class fighter/wizards, adventurers, and War Mages.

Platemail (or lighter): As above, but even more rare in its use.

an Anicent wize wizard once said to his apprentices "The very best protection your ever gonna get, is a nice suite of full plate, polish it up nice, Enchant it if you can stick it on someone else and keep them between you and danger at all times."
