I am doing research on a character named simply the Grey Man.
I was reading the Legend of Huma and the Land of the Minotaurs and in both novels, they make reference to "person" that works for Gilean, keeping the balance. He is simply called the Grey Man. He is the one that helps Huma take the "tests" to find the Dragonlances. He also helps Kaz free the Minotaurs of the evil red dragon.

Is there any other references to this Grey Man (in modules or novels)? Who was he? Is he still around?

I think perhaps he was an avatar of Gilean or some other Neutral god (although I can't imagine who, his personality doesn't match any but Gilean).

Any info is apprectiated.
Thank you

My guess also would be Gilean. It's been a while since I have read the Legend of Huma though.

I dont remember reading ne other info about him than in those books u just mentioned.
I always imagined him as a black robed wizard who was given a chance for redemption and more powers than neone could ever have, but he wasn't allowed to interfere in the world. Those powers would be given by the three moons or maybe it was sorcery when no one knew about it

Ok, lets assume he isn't Gilean. Any ideas who was in a former life?
Following lost_boy_84's idea, what black robe was he?

There is more information on the "Gray man" in the module "Dragons of Light" (DL7).

I have no idea, but he could be any black robe that existed up to the moment. He doesnt have to be a big bad guy from ne story
he just had to want lots of powers

Terry may either be referring to the Grey Wraith which chases anybody who has the Silver Arm of Ergoth, or Bentoldi the Hermit, who's an associate of Astinus' and travelled to the area of the Stone Dragon shortly before the War of the Lance. Neither really fits, though - the Grey Wraith is a scary spectral horror, and Bentoldi's just a guy.

Cheers,
Cam

Am I the only one that thinks its crazy that we don't have more info on him?

I mean he is the one that help Huma find the dragonlances in the first place...

I wish we could talk to Richard Knaak, he would know.

Thanks for all the replies so far, keep them coming.

Dude, I'm sorry guys, but the Grey Man *IS* Gilean. Huma says as much in the book.

Dude, where did you read that? Its possible that Huma thought that, but I couldn't find where he claimed it.

Also, did you read Land of the Minotaurs? It seems to be the only other source for the Grey Man. In it the Grey Man claims that he is doing what he does (maintaining balance and all) because the gods of Neutrality commanded him. The Grey Man also claimed that he was the most powerful mage in all Krynn.
I don't know about everyone else, but it seemed to me that the Grey Man was an individual who actually worked for Gilean and the other Neutral gods.

I finally recieved an email from Richard Knaak himself (creator of Kaz and the Grey Man).

Hi, gforce99 -

The Grey Man's history is one still hidden, but hints were made in the
books, especially Land of the Minotaurs. I hope to be able to explore
more
about him at some point, so I cannot say more, not even if he is still
alive
in the Fifth Age.

I apologize for the non-answers, one of the tricky parts about being a
writer in this series.

Best,

Richard A. Knaak

It would be a cool twist if the Herald turned out to be a reincarnation of the Grey Man, rather than Astinus, like everyone thinks.
