Young Readers Chronicles?

Can someone explain to me what the “Young Reader Novels” are about? My understanding is that they are a watered-down version of the Chronicles. If that’s true that’s just ridiculous and I’ll sooner imagine is some marketing scheme to draw Harry Potter readers than any concern for children by Hasbro.

Seriously, there was nothing in those books children can’t handle. Hell, I was 13 years old when I read Dragons of Autumn Twilight! Whatever happened to fairy tales having a little darkness in them? Fairy Tales by their very nature should have something freighting mixed with magic. I just don’t’ buy that with the horror children are expose to in prime time TV there really is a need to release a “clean” version of what I consider classic books.

And if these books are just re-written in a friendlier format that’s just as dumb. We don’t give kids enough credit them. I hear in Japan children are doing algebra problems in the fifth grade. I think they have the right idea, but that’s for another forum.

My understanding (coming mostly from grabbing one of the books and flipping through it) is that the young redears set has not been rewritten just broken up into 6 books. In theory this makes the books more attractive for youn childern because they are short.

I remember how when Harry Potter Year 4 and 5 came out a lot of news articles where commenting on the length of the books and how they are really too long to be considered traditional children's book.

Also I beleive that when chronicles was printed in spanish it was done in six books.

the german versions of chronicles and legends are 6 books each .. that's for sure. (Every DL-book that is translated into german is split up into two books)
Total crap if you ask me - pure moneymaking.
nevertheless I'm happy I bought them back in 1994.

I've only read the first part of the first book.

It's exactly the same...but edited. No swear words. Case in point:

Chronicles
"Damn the beards of dwarves, and damn the eyes of elves!" said by Tasselhoff

Young Readers
"Curse the beards of dwarves, and curse the eyes of elves!" or something similar.

Kinda dumb, if you ask me...but they didn't, so there you go. :D

They prolly toned down the gore too. Such as the description of what was left of Riverwind at Xak Tarsoth (sp?) after the black dragon spat on him.

Nope...I beleive that was there in it's full glory.

And there's no need to tone down the sex...it's already just boot scenes anyway. ;)

This reminds me of when Caveney went nuts about wanting more boot scenes in the books. It boggles me since that's like wanting more footnotes in a book pointing to a book you don't own. Why would you want more of them? It isn't as if you get anything out of a scene that picks up after all the action.

Cheers,
Cam

Ah, you mis-understand. I don't want more boot scenes. Usually...I'm not a fan of sex in movies and books in general. What I like about Chronicles is that whenever it is used, it is used to move the plot line forward. Usually it's just gratuitous sex...and if I wanted that, I'd rent a porno or read a romance novel.

For the most part though...DL stays respectable...when used improperlly...those kinds of scenes usually ruin the integrity of the piece for me...except when used correctly like in DoWN and DoSD.

What sex in Chronicles?
The only thing I remember having to do with sex in Chronicles was where Goldmoon and Caramon have "the talk" and where Kitiara and her associate were going to discuss matters of "thrust and penetration".
Was there more?

I really don't care for the Young Readers versions at all.

It's just another way for them to sell Chronicles in yet another form.

If anything, they should have new material written for this. Not just another blasted reprint.

You forgot that Kitiara essentially hijacked Tanis in Flotsam for 3 days...? There's also Ariakas' scene in Dargaard Keep where he casually maims/kills her latest lover (after Bakaris went missing).
