Hello all,

I am new to this particular form but not to the boards. I have just started running a DL campaign (after many, many years of FR) for the first time and I must say that I really love it. Now, I made this quiz up because I really want to know your opinion on how a Kender functions within a group. I have downloaded the Kendercyclopedia and have read it, but I want your answers to these questions.

A simple yes or no should be good for most of them. Some require a bit of a short answer. Of course feel free to write as much as you want on each one to explain your opinion. Thanks for your time in advance. -Dess

Kender quiz:

1) Do Kender care about money? (More then what they need to survive)

2) Will a Kender be the group leader?

3) Will a Kender be the group spokesperson / diplomat?

4) Will a Kender step up and be a group’s main tactical planner when nobody else is willing to plan?

5) Are Kender greedy?

6) If a Kender were presented with an interesting but useless magical item i.e. a magical cuckoo clock that would chime on command or a +5 ring of protection which would he choose? (In other words will Kender pick an item for usefulness or fun)

7) Will a Kender get rid of a cursed item that is interesting looking i.e. a cursed luck stone type – not exactly the same (-1 to hit, -1 dmg, -1 saves, -1 checks) that will return back to the Kender no matter what, until a remove curse is cast upon it or will he keep it because he thinks it is cool?

8) If a Kender is a caster type i.e. wizzy or sorcerer, will he cast the most appropriate spells in combat?

9) How often will a Kender do something off the wall (that he thinks is helpful but has the opposite effect) in combat to get his party in hot water?

10) To what level will a Kender progress as an arcane spell caster i.e. sorcerer?

All of these answers are treating Normal Kender. Afflicted Kender do what they want and can be much like humans, elves, and other "normal" races.

1) Not at all. They like it as much as the next person but it doesn't mean as much to them as it does to humans. Don't try to steel their money though, cause they hate thieves.

2) Depends on the Kender and the Group. Many Kender are born leaders, some are just along for the fun. However, a kender who is just along for the fun can decide that the fun is in leading.

3) Of course. Kender always want to meet new people. However, if you want a SUCCESSFUL diplomat, use someone else. Lots of people don't like Kender (why I'll never know!)

4) Of course, but their plans are usually meant to maximise the fun value, and not to achieve the actual goal of kicking enemy butt. However, this unorthodox planning can work in the right situations.

5) Afflicted: Yes -- Normal: No

6) Both. Seriously, probably the clock, but this doesn't mean a kender is stupid. Don't penalize your players if they choose the ring. Remember rings are shinny and pretty and easier to carry around then a clock, so either one could get chosen. But in reality they might ask for the clock and lift the ring when you're not looking.

7) He might keep it for a bit, but it would get boring. And bored kender are NOT your friends.

8) Depends on your definition of appropriate. A kender spellcaster will cast spells designed to maximize their fun value. This can work against opponents if they think it would be fun to cast grease into melee, but its a crap shot. Now, this doesn't mean they can't cast combat spells. Kender are vindicative if you make them angry enough, i.e. steal their pouches or hurt their friends. Look at Tas at the beginning of DoAT, he surprised the crap out of that goblin.

9) A kender will never do anything that will put their party in hot water. They might do something that will backfire, like try to spring a trap, or find out where the secret door goes, but they won't stand up and wave to a bunch of goblins walking by. They won't intentionally do something stupid.

10) As high as they can keep their interest in the class.

Zug Zug.

"1) Do Kender care about money? (More then what they need to survive)"

No.

"2) Will a Kender be the group leader?"

Generally, no. Most kender aren't capable of handling the responsibilities associated with being the leader of a group, as well as lacking the ability to understand the motivations of most other races. In an a group of all kender, of course one will be =P.

"3) Will a Kender be the group spokesperson / diplomat?"

They'd sure like to be. Will it be best for the group? Most likely not...

"4) Will a Kender step up and be a group’s main tactical planner when nobody else is willing to plan?"

Generally, kender don't have the foresight to come up with complicated plans - they do have the advantage of always remaining calm however =D. If the group dosen't have a plan, they'll definately come up with something.

"5) Are Kender greedy?"

No. Kender are a very social oriented people - they like interesting things but they don't really want them.

"6) If a Kender were presented with an interesting but useless magical item i.e. a magical cuckoo clock that would chime on command or a +5 ring of protection which would he choose? (In other words will Kender pick an item for usefulness or fun)"

Almost always the kender would pick the item that they believe to be more interesting.

"7) Will a Kender get rid of a cursed item that is interesting looking i.e. a cursed luck stone type – not exactly the same (-1 to hit, -1 dmg, -1 saves, -1 checks) that will return back to the Kender no matter what, until a remove curse is cast upon it or will he keep it because he thinks it is cool? "

A kender would keep an interesting cursed item up to a point - the particular example you gave I can't really see remaining interesting to a kender longer then a few minutes.

"8) If a Kender is a caster type i.e. wizzy or sorcerer, will he cast the most appropriate spells in combat?"

Generally, the kender will want to be semi effectual. However, they will make their choices based on whats interesting to them.

"9) How often will a Kender do something off the wall (that he thinks is helpful but has the opposite effect) in combat to get his party in hot water? "

I'd say most Kender would do it fairly often - note, that these aren't stupid mistakes, but rather more the "forgetful" and "I wanted to see what happened" mistakes.

"10) To what level will a Kender progress as an arcane spell caster i.e. sorcerer?"

As long as he can pay attention. I believe no actual kender should rise above 5th level spellcaster (AKA, non-inflicted) but feel free to think or find of a reason.

From the words of a friend of mine, Wendi Whistletip:
----------------------------------------

"1) Do Kender care about money? (More then what they need to survive)"

Of course. I certainly care about money. Someone was telling me that money was what you pay others for their hard work. What's down right troublesome is that everyone else doesn't seem so concerned about money as kender are. Don't let me even get me started on all the times I've tried giving back all the money people drop from their pockets. It would be a lot easier if they weren't running away so fast.

"2) Will a Kender be the group leader?"

I don't see why not. See, a group leader is a motivator. A person who can get things done. I think the problem is that my good friends simply aren't motivated enough to do it. All too often, you have a group of friends down in some dragon's lair. Everyone's quiet, and taking a very, veeeerrrrrry long time walking down a simple boring corridor checking for traps. Sometimes it takes a motivated person like a kender, to simply get things done. If there's a dragon down there, it probably already knows we're here, so let's cut to chase and meet that dragon.

"3) Will a Kender be the group spokesperson / diplomat?"

Oh yes. Sometimes, a kender's the best diplomat for the job. Take that dragon in that dragon's lair as an example. So here we have a big dragon, cutting off the only exit out of his lair. Now, everyone else is either screaming, praying, casting spells, and whatnot. Nothing was getting done. So, a kender like myself simply HAS to take the role of the spokesperson and talk to that dragon, before things get out of hand.

"4) Will a Kender step up and be a group’s main tactical planner when nobody else is willing to plan?"

Well yes again. I don't like to brag, but we kender do tend to notice things which a tactical planner needs to make the right decisions. It's how we kender can point out all the little problems in other people. No one else in that little lair-crawling expedition noticed that the dragon was really really ugly. I mean, son-of-a-ugly-draconian ugly. It would explain why this dragon is living in a remote area, away from the city. After the dragon started called us nasty things like "flimsy whisps of ash" I felt the need to point out how ugly that dragon was. It turned out for the better because once i said it, the dragon, who was inhaling at the time, suddenly turned around to looked at me, and got really bothered that he started choking. Flames were spewing out of his poor mouth. That gave my friends the chance they needed to collect themselves and stop that dragon from doing more harm.

"5) Are Kender greedy?"

Sigh. well, I must admit, kender can sometimes be greedy. I know, you would think kender were better than that. I get greedy even when i try not to be. When the group started looking at the treasure in the lair, there was this really interesting magical ball. It was of gnome origin, i can tell you that. Well, I found it first, and i thought the flashing numbers on the ball was interesting. I wanted to see what happens when the numbers reach 0000. I don't know what came over my friends, but they started demanding to look at the ball. Well, I was looking at it, and I wasn't done looking at it. Sigh. Now that I look at it, I was all too greedy, fighting over it thatI almost missed the 0000. Everyone should have a chance to see it. It wouldn't be fair not to let them see what happens too. So i let them have it.

"6) If a Kender were presented with an interesting but useless magical item i.e. a magical cuckoo clock that would chime on command or a +5 ring of protection which would he choose? (In other words will Kender pick an item for usefulness or fun)"

Well, you mentioned the cuckoo clock, that sounds neat. But you also say there's an interesting magic item? That's a really hard decision. I really can't tell you, unless I have more information. What's the interesting item? can i see why it's interesting but useless? can i see the cuckoo clock too? It's really hard to compare the two without taking a good look and hold the two of them.

Gods have mercy on friends of kender. I'll continue with more answers from Wendi later.

A round ball counting down to 0000? That sounds interesting! What happened when it reached 0000?
