(PHB DMG MM) Then on a family holiday in Norfolk we chanced by a second hand book shop full of old relics and I spotted three 2nd ed. books. They were £4 each but I haggled and said I'd take all three for £10 (somewhere around $15-$20). The woman seemed only too happy to sell them - they'd probably been sat there for years lol. It's the PHB, DMG, and Tome of Magic in case you're wondering (I could do with the Monster Manual to complete the 'holy trinity' but I can make do without I suppose). Is there much collectability value because they're old? Or are they just old and therefore next to worthless? I plan to keep them rather than sell them anyway, because I'd like to give them a try. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : caeruleus Date : 07-02-07 03:26 PM Thread Title : Re: My New Purchase I've seen such books in used bookstores, and sometimes they go for about $5 each, other times they go for $20 each or more. In any case, I'd hardly call them worthless, even though they're not especially rare. Enjoy them. Even if you don't play with them, it's cool to compare sometimes. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : Wiseblood Date : 07-02-07 05:49 PM Thread Title : Re: My New Purchase Congrats, read them definitely. They are very likely to give you ideas. Back when I played 2e, I would go outside in the fall ( in Virginia) and the air would smell like D&D. Cool, crisp, slight hint of woodsmoke and earth. Made me want to go fight goblins.:D That's something I rarely feel these days of 3.5. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 4] Author : tankschmidt Date : 07-02-07 07:27 PM Thread Title : Re: My New Purchase Cool, crisp, slight hint of woodsmoke and earth. That is kinda cool, I've never paid RRP for a sourcebook in my life, but you got a great deal. Tome of Magic is one of the few books missing from my collection and I remember it as a brilliant accessory. Hope that you get some use out of them. Game on! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 7] Author : True_Atlantean Date : 07-03-07 07:38 AM Thread Title : Re: My New Purchase Congrats, read them definitely. If you can incorporate it in any way to storytelling, it will connect with your audience in a manner more personal than describing any other sense. The three that I remember for smells as far as gaming products go (to send this even weirder) is the smell of 2nd ed books, Magic cards and the old Jyhad edition of the VTES CCG. There was a definate smell as you broke the shrink wrap seal that I can still remember. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 8] Author : Hugin Date : 07-03-07 10:33 AM Thread Title : Re: My New Purchase I know it sounds wierd, but it has been proven that smell is the most effective tool for evoking memory. It's very true. That's why Crayola has the smell of their crayons patented and consider it their most valuable asset. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 9] Author : Bolithio Date : 07-04-07 11:49 AM Thread Title : Re: My New Purchase Congrats, read them definitely. Also the flavor text in the 2E books gave that hint of realism, that made it believable, you know the business about historical clerics, mages and the like. Whats the smell of 3E? Plastic and Pepsi? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 10] Author : True_Atlantean Date : 07-05-07 07:11 AM Thread Title : Re: My New Purchase It's very true. I did recall one instance though when I was running a game of Mage and wanted to evoke the smell of a laboratory. I passed around an unmarked jar that had stored pickled onions in it and told each player to smell the jar. I then asked them to add their own interpretations to the scene and had them as co-storytellers for the description of the scene. It worked wonders, but I really don't want to do the same for my dungeons. :D -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Downloaded from Wizards Community (http://forums.gleemax.com) at 05-10-08 08:23 AM.
